Wonders Through the Halachic Authorities

Sometimes Hashem works wonders through the great halachic authorities: 'His wonders and the judgements of His mouth'. Because people accept the posek's ruling on what is forbidden and permitted, they accept his word in other matters too, and wonders happen through him. This is the root of the wonders told of the Geonim of earlier generations.

1-minute recap

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty one: wonders through the halachic authorities.

Sometimes Hashem works wonders through the poskim, the halachic authorities.

His wonders, and the judgements of His mouth: what the posek rules comes to be.

Our own reflection: honour the true poskim; their words carry great power.

Explainer

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty one. A short teaching on the power of a true halachic ruling.

Sometimes, Rebbe Nachman says, Hashem works wonders through the great halachic authorities, as the verse says: His wonders, and the judgements of His mouth. When the posek rules that something shall be so, a wonder happens.

Because he is accepted as a posek, his word is accepted in what is forbidden and permitted, and so too in other matters; and so wonders happen through him. That is the root of the wonders told about the great Geonim of earlier generations.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Honour the true poskim, and bring them your questions. A ruling given for the sake of Heaven carries great power.

— Part 1: Wonders Through the Halachic Authorities —

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty one. A short shiur in one part: wonders through the halachic authorities.

Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty one. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.

Sometimes Hashem works wonders through the halachic authorities, as in 'His wonders and the judgements of His mouth': through the judgements of his mouth, when he rules that it shall be so, a wonder happens.

For since he is accepted as a posek, and when he rules on forbidden and permitted and the like his opinion is accepted, so too when he rules on any matter his opinion is accepted, and wonders are done through him.

And this is the wonders told about the Geonim who lived in the generations before us.

Our explanation. When a true posek's word is accepted below, in the laws of forbidden and permitted, it is accepted above as well. So his ruling in other matters can itself become a wonder.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Honour the true poskim, and bring them your questions. A ruling given for the sake of Heaven carries great power.
