Tasting the Land of Israel
One who has truly tasted the Land of Israel can sense in another whether he was with a tzaddik for Rosh Hashanah, and what kind of tzaddik. The air of the Land makes wise because Hashem's eyes are always on it; those eyes are awakened by Hashem's pride in Israel, 'Israel in whom I glory', which becomes tefillin, expanded mind. Whoever sees the true tzaddik in his glory, above all at the Rosh Hashanah gathering, receives that glory; his own eyes become like Hashem's eyes, and wherever he looks becomes like the Land of Israel: 'your eyes shall see the King in His beauty; they shall behold a land far off'.

1-minute recap
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty: tasting the Land of Israel.
The air of the Land of Israel makes wise, because Hashem's eyes are always upon it.
Those eyes awaken through Hashem's pride in Israel: Israel, in whom I glory.
Whoever sees the true tzaddik in his glory, at the Rosh Hashanah gathering, receives that glory.
Then wherever he looks, it becomes like the Land of Israel: your eyes shall see a land far off.
Our own reflection: carry the Land of Israel in your eyes, wherever you are.
Explainer
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty: one who knows the Land of Israel, who has truly tasted its taste.
Rebbe Nachman says that one who has truly tasted the Land of Israel can sense in another person whether he was with a tzaddik for Rosh Hashanah, whether that tzaddik is great or small, and whether he is a true tzaddik.
This taste can be explained to anyone who knows the taste of understanding: a learner who feels the sweetness of a good answer to a hard question, or a wise man in any field. For the Sages say: the air of the Land of Israel makes wise.
Why? Because Hashem's eyes are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. Eyes stand for wisdom, as when the eyes of Adam and Chavah were opened. Where Hashem looks, the air makes wise.
And what awakens those eyes? Hashem's pride in Israel: Israel, in whom I glory. That glory becomes tefillin, called pe'er, glory, which are expanded mind; they enter within and break through into the eyes, and so Hashem watches over the Land. That is why it is called the Land of Israel.
When a Jew moves away from Hashem, the Shechinah cries: my head is heavy, my arm is heavy, the places of the tefillin. The glory is damaged. But each Jew who comes close adds to Hashem's glory, and so to the holiness of the Land.
Who can see Hashem's glory? One who sees the true tzaddik, who brings people close to Hashem, for he himself is that glory. Above all at the gathering on Rosh Hashanah, when many come to hear the word of Hashem, his beauty and glory are greatest.
One who truly looks at him receives that glory: it becomes tefillin, mind, in him, and his eyes become like Hashem's eyes. Then wherever he looks becomes like the Land of Israel. Your eyes shall see the King in His beauty; they shall behold a land far off, for wisdom is called far off.
So one who longs for the Land of Israel, when he meets someone who was with a true tzaddik for Rosh Hashanah, should feel the taste of the Land, and his longing should be stirred, each at his level. The main thing is truth and simplicity.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. The holiness of the Land of Israel can travel in our eyes. Look at the world the way Hashem looks at His Land, and carry its wisdom wherever you go.

— Part 1: Why the Air of the Land Makes Wise —
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty: tasting the Land of Israel. Part one: why the air of the Land makes wise, and where its holiness comes from.
Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.
One who knows of the Land of Israel, who has truly tasted the taste of the Land of Israel, can recognise in another whether he was with a tzaddik for Rosh Hashanah or not; whether that tzaddik is great or small in level; whether he is a true tzaddik or not; or whether he himself is a tzaddik.
For the taste of the Land of Israel can be described to one who knows the taste of understanding. Only an ignorant man cannot know it; but one who knows understanding, like learners who feel a little of its taste in a plain answer and a question, as learners do, or the wise in other wisdoms, who feel the taste of understanding, can understand the taste of the Land of Israel; for the air of the Land of Israel makes wise.
The taste of wisdom and understanding is surely very precious; but the main quality of the holiness of the Land is only through Hashem's watching over it. Because Hashem looks at the Land always, as it is written, 'the eyes of Hashem your Elokim are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year', the Land is holy and its air makes wise. For eyes stand for wisdom, as in 'the eyes of both of them were opened', which Rashi says is said of wisdom.
Our explanation. The Sages say the air of the Land of Israel makes wise. Rebbe Nachman explains: Hashem's eyes are always upon it, and eyes stand for wisdom. Where Hashem looks, wisdom fills the air.
But from where is this drawn and awakened with Hashem, these eyes that watch? It comes through the souls of Israel, in whom Hashem takes pride: 'Israel, in whom I glory'. Through that glory tefillin are made, which are called pe'er, glory; and tefillin are mind. They enter within and break through into the eyes, and from this comes Hashem's watching, as it were, which makes the holiness of the Land, its air that makes wise. That is why it is called the Land of Israel.
But surely not all times are equal in Israel's closeness to Hashem. Sometimes, Heaven forbid, someone moves away from Him, and then, on the contrary, the Shechinah cries: 'my head is heavy, my arm is heavy'. Her cry is that the glory is damaged, that He cannot take pride in them, and the tefillin made from that glory are damaged: 'my head', 'my arm', precisely, the places of the tefillin.
Only when one Jew comes close to Hashem, and another Jew is added who wants to serve Him, and the more Jews are added who want to serve Him and come close, then His glory grows more and more, for He takes pride in His people Israel who come close to Him. Through this glory tefillin, mind, are made, and from this comes the holiness of the Land, its air that makes wise, through the eyes of His watching.
Our explanation, step by step. Hashem takes pride in every Jew who comes close. That glory becomes tefillin, expanded mind. And it opens, as it were, Hashem's watching eyes on the Land, which make its air wise. So every Jew who draws near adds holiness to the Land of Israel.
— Part 2: The King in His Beauty —
Part two: seeing the true tzaddik in his glory on Rosh Hashanah, and carrying the Land of Israel in our eyes.
Section two. But one who can see this glory, Hashem's pride in His people Israel, receives glory and mind from the glory he sees; tefillin are made in him too, entering within and breaking through into the eyes, and then his eyes too become like the eyes of Hashem. Then wherever he looks and sees, there too the air becomes like the air of the Land of Israel that makes wise, for the main holiness of the Land is only from those eyes.
But who can see Hashem, who can see His glory? Yet one who sees the true tzaddik, who brings people close to serving Him, through whom Israel mainly comes close to their Father in Heaven: the tzaddik himself is the glory in which Hashem takes pride in His people, for through him is all the closeness and all the glory.
Then whoever looks at him; and above all at the time of the gathering, when people gather to him to hear the word of Hashem, and most of all on Rosh Hashanah, the great gathering. Then the glory is greatest, because many people gather who want to come close to Hashem, and the beauty and glory of the tzaddik grows, for he himself is the glory.
Then one who truly looks at this true tzaddik also receives from this glory; tefillin, mind, are made in him too, and his eyes become like the eyes of Hashem. Then wherever he looks, it too becomes like the Land of Israel, its air that makes wise; for he makes the air wise by looking with those eyes, which come from the glory.
This explains 'your eyes shall behold the King in His beauty': when you merit to see the King in His beauty, the tzaddik in his beauty and glory, at the time of the gathering, then 'your eyes shall see a land far off', the Land of Israel, its air that makes wise. For wisdom is called far off, as it is written, 'I said, I will be wise, but it was far from me'. So wherever you look with your eyes, it will become like the air of the Land that makes wise.
Our explanation. The King in His beauty is read as the tzaddik in his glory, seen at the gathering, above all on Rosh Hashanah. One who sees him there takes that glory into his own eyes, and carries the wisdom of the Land of Israel wherever he looks.
Section three. So one who has desire and longing for the Land of Israel, especially one who has tasted the true taste of the Land, when he meets and spends time with someone who was with a true tzaddik for Rosh Hashanah, must then feel the taste of the Land of Israel; for through this man the air there too becomes like the Land. And his longing and yearning for the Land should be stirred now, each according to his level. The main thing is that it be in truth and simplicity.
Section four. There are more matters in this: no one dies with even half his desire fulfilled. So one never fills his desire and will with money, for he always lacks. But there is a doubled abundance, as in 'and silver in abundance for you', a doubled word; with that abundance his will is filled, since it is doubled.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. The holiness of the Land of Israel can travel in our eyes. Look at the world the way Hashem looks at His Land, and carry its wisdom wherever you go.

EN (our paraphrase): For the taste of the Land of Israel can be described to one who knows the taste of understanding.
Scene 5 · LM II:40 §1, on Devarim 11:12 and Bereishis 3:7 · paragraph §1.3
EN (our paraphrase): The taste of wisdom and understanding is surely very precious; but the main quality of the holiness of the Land is only through Hashem's watching over it.
Scene 7 · LM II:40 §1, on Yeshayahu 49:3 and Sukkah 25a · paragraph §1.4
EN (our paraphrase): But from where is this drawn and awakened with Hashem, these eyes that watch? It comes through the souls of Israel, in whom Hashem takes pride: 'Israel, in whom I glory'. Through that glory tefillin are made, which are called pe'er, glory; and tefillin are mind. They enter within and break through into the eyes, and from this comes Hashem's watching, as it were, which makes the holiness of the Land, its air that makes wise. That is why it is called the Land of Israel.
Scene 8 · LM II:40 §1, on Sanhedrin 46a · paragraph §1.5
EN (our paraphrase): But surely not all times are equal in Israel's closeness to Hashem.
Scene 9 · LM II:40 §1 · paragraph §1.6
EN (our paraphrase): Only when one Jew comes close to Hashem, and another Jew is added who wants to serve Him, and the more Jews are added who want to serve Him and come close, then His glory grows more and more, for He takes pride in His people Israel who come close to Him. Through this glory tefillin, mind, are made, and from this comes the holiness of the Land, its air that makes wise, through the eyes of His watching.
Part 2 — The King in His Beauty
Scene 2 · LM II:40 §2 · paragraph §2.1
EN (our paraphrase): But one who can see this glory, Hashem's pride in His people Israel, receives glory and mind from the glory he sees; tefillin are made in him too, entering within and breaking through into the eyes, and then his eyes too become like the eyes of Hashem. Then wherever he looks and sees, there too the air becomes like the air of the Land of Israel that makes wise, for the main holiness of the Land is only from those eyes.
Scene 3 · LM II:40 §2 · paragraph §2.2
EN (our paraphrase): But who can see Hashem, who can see His glory? Yet one who sees the true tzaddik, who brings people close to serving Him, through whom Israel mainly comes close to their Father in Heaven: the tzaddik himself is the glory in which Hashem takes pride in His people, for through him is all the closeness and all the glory.
Scene 4 · LM II:40 §2 · paragraph §2.3
EN (our paraphrase): Then whoever looks at him; and above all at the time of the gathering, when people gather to him to hear the word of Hashem, and most of all on Rosh Hashanah, the great gathering. Then the glory is greatest, because many people gather who want to come close to Hashem, and the beauty and glory of the tzaddik grows, for he himself is the glory.
Scene 5 · LM II:40 §2 · paragraph §2.4
EN (our paraphrase): Then one who truly looks at this true tzaddik also receives from this glory; tefillin, mind, are made in him too, and his eyes become like the eyes of Hashem. Then wherever he looks, it too becomes like the Land of Israel, its air that makes wise; for he makes the air wise by looking with those eyes, which come from the glory.
Scene 6 · LM II:40 §2, on Yeshayahu 33:17 and Koheles 7:23 · paragraph §2.5
EN (our paraphrase): This explains 'your eyes shall behold the King in His beauty': when you merit to see the King in His beauty, the tzaddik in his beauty and glory, at the time of the gathering, then 'your eyes shall see a land far off', the Land of Israel, its air that makes wise. For wisdom is called far off, as it is written, 'I said, I will be wise, but it was far from me'. So wherever you look with your eyes, it will become like the air of the Land that makes wise.
Scene 8 · LM II:40 §3 · paragraph §3.1
EN (our paraphrase): So one who has desire and longing for the Land of Israel, especially one who has tasted the true taste of the Land, when he meets and spends time with someone who was with a true tzaddik for Rosh Hashanah, must then feel the taste of the Land of Israel; for through this man the air there too becomes like the Land. And his longing and yearning for the Land should be stirred now, each according to his level. The main thing is that it be in truth and simplicity.
Scene 9 · LM II:40 §4, on Koheles Rabbah 1 and Iyov 22:25 · paragraph §4.1

EN (our paraphrase): There are more matters in this: no one dies with even half his desire fulfilled. So one never fills his desire and will with money, for he always lacks. But there is a doubled abundance, as in 'and silver in abundance for you', a doubled word; with that abundance his will is filled, since it is doubled.
