Go and See the Works of Hashem

Creation is full of wonders, and all of it was made for Israel, and Israel for Shabbos: the world of souls, the purpose, where Hashem will be known with no barrier. Every created thing has a beginning and a purpose, and by looking deeply into its form we can come to know the Creator and serve Him. People of small understanding, the 'feet', need a faithful shepherd like Moshe, through whom even a maidservant saw more than Yechezkel. 'Go, see the works of Hashem, who set shamos in the land': the purpose is reached precisely through this lowly world, so we should long and pray for such a leader.

1-minute recap

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty nine: go and see the works of Hashem.

All of creation is full of wonders, and every thing in it has a purpose.

The purpose is Shabbos, the world of souls, where we will know Hashem with no barrier.

Those of small understanding need a faithful shepherd, like Moshe, who could light up even the feet.

Go, see: even the feet will see the works of Hashem in this lowly world.

Our own reflection: every leaf and stone can lead us to Hashem, if we only look.

Explainer

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty nine, on the verse: go and see the works of Hashem, who has set wonders in the land.

The creation is truly wondrous: how many are Your works, Hashem. Even this world alone, with its stones and plants and living things, is beyond measure; how much more the other worlds. And all of it was created for Israel.

And Israel were created for Shabbos, the purpose. Shabbos is the purpose of heaven and earth: the world of souls, a world that is all Shabbos, where Hashem will be known with no screen and no barrier, and each one will point and say: this is Hashem, for whom we hoped.

So every created thing has a beginning, where it came down until it took shape, and an end, its purpose. Israel can look deeply into the details of each thing, its form and structure, see in it the greatness of the Creator, and serve Him through it, all the way up to its purpose.

Great minds can do this. But we, small as we are today, on the level of the feet, how can we? So we should long and yearn for a leader of the generation, a faithful shepherd, who can light this knowledge even into us.

Like Moshe Rabbeinu, who could light up even the lowest. The Sages say: a maidservant at the sea saw what the prophet Yechezkel did not see. That was because of the greatness of the leader: he could draw the mind down even into the feet.

That is: lechu chazu, go and see. Go, the feet, the tools of walking: they too will see the works of Hashem in this lowly land. And shamos, wonders, the Sages read as shemos, names; and the Rebbe reads it as the initials of the purpose of heaven and earth, the world of souls, which is reached precisely through this world.

It is wondrous: reaching Hashem depends on the creatures of this lowly world. Every soul must pass through it; Mashiach will not come until all the souls have come down. So we should say this with tears, and pray: when will we know Hashem from every detail of this world? Send us a faithful shepherd.

The six days are the beginning, and Shabbos the end and purpose; what was made on the sixth day is closer to Shabbos. Section three: the Sages said it would have been easier for a man not to be created. That is only about this world's troubles. For the World to Come, it is better to be created; and even here, one hour of teshuvah and good deeds is worth more than all the life of the World to Come.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Look at a leaf, a stone, the sea, slowly, and ask what it says about its Creator. And pray for teachers who can help even the simplest of us see.

Full shiur

— Part 1: Every Creature Has a Purpose —

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty nine: go and see the works of Hashem. Part one: the wonders of creation, the purpose inside every created thing, and our need for a faithful shepherd.

Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty nine. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.

'Go, see the works of Hashem, who has set wonders in the land.'

For truly it is a wondrous and awesome thing, that Hashem created the whole creation, with so very many wondrous and awesome things in it: how many are Your works, Hashem! Even in this world alone, Hashem's wonders are mighty: He created minerals and plants and so on. Who can measure the greatness of Hashem in the creatures of this world, all the more so the other worlds? And all of it was created only for Israel.

And Israel themselves were created mainly for Shabbos, which is the purpose. For Shabbos is the purpose of the making of heaven and earth: the world of souls, a world that is all Shabbos. There they will know Hashem properly, with no dividing screen and no hindrance; then there will be complete oneness, and each one will point with his finger: this is Hashem, for whom we hoped. That is the purpose for which Hashem created the whole creation.

Our explanation. Tachlis means the purpose, the final goal. Rebbe Nachman calls it Shabbos, the world of souls, where Hashem is known with no barrier at all. Everything was created for that.

So surely every created thing holds the purpose. Every thing has a beginning and an end: the beginning, from where it came down step by step until it took shape in this form; and the end, the purpose for which it was created: that Israel can look deeply into the details of creation, the form, structure and likeness of each thing, see in them the greatness of the Creator, and serve Him through it.

And so higher and higher, up to the purpose, where that thing is joined to the purpose. For every single thing holds on to the purpose for which it was created: through it one can reach Hashem and serve Him, up to that purpose, where that thing ends and is joined to the purpose.

And each person must deepen his study in this, to know and recognise the greatness of the Creator in every single thing, in its form and likeness, in the details of its limbs and structure and the like, and to serve Him through this, until he comes to the purpose of that thing, which is Shabbos, the world of souls.

Our explanation, step by step. Every creature has a beginning, the path by which it came down into form. Look deeply at its form and detail. And rise through it, step by step, to its purpose: to knowing Hashem.

Now those with great minds can do this. But people of small worth like us today, all of us on a very low level, the level of the feet, how can we come to this knowledge? So we must long and yearn very much: if only we had a leader of the generation, a faithful shepherd, with the power to light this knowledge even into us, the feet, so we merit to come to the purpose,

like Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, who from his very great level could light up even the lowest of the low, even a maidservant, as our Sages said: a maidservant at the sea saw what the prophet Yechezkel did not see. So even Yechezkel, so great a prophet, did not see what a maidservant saw in the days of Moshe. All this was from the greatness of the leader,

— Part 2: A Shepherd Who Lights Even the Feet —

Part two: the faithful shepherd who lights even the feet, why this lowly world matters, and the tears of longing.

for Moshe Rabbeinu was the leader, and he could light up even the level of the feet. Even the feet, far from the mind, could still grasp and know the purpose, through the works of Hashem that He created in this lowly world. For through the greatness of the leader, the mind can be drawn even down to the feet, and then these feet can be greater than another mind.

And this is 'lechu chazu', go and see. Go, precisely: the feet, the tools of walking; they too will see the works of Hashem which He set in the land, in this lowly world, for through Hashem's works in this lowly land one can know and reach the purpose. And this is:

'who has set shamos in the land': the purpose is shemos, the initials of the purpose of the making of heaven and earth. The world of souls, the purpose, is clothed in and held by this lowly land; precisely through this lowly world one must reach the purpose.

Truly it is a wondrous novelty that reaching the purpose, knowing Hashem, depends precisely on the creatures of this lowly world, and all souls must pass through this world to reach it. For the son of David will not come until all the souls in the guf are finished; all must come to this lowly world, and so all of them need its creatures to reach the purpose.

We should say this with weeping, with tears, yearning and pleading before Him: when will we merit to know and recognise the Creator from every detail of this world, up to the purpose? And on our low level now, we need Hashem to have mercy on us and give us a leader, a faithful shepherd, who can light this knowledge into us, so we can serve Him properly and come to the purpose.

Our explanation. The feet are far from the head: they stand for simple people, far from great understanding. A true leader draws the mind down even to the feet, until they see more than another person's mind. That is the maidservant at the sea.

Section two. The six days are the beginning, in which everything was created, and Shabbos is the end and purpose. Surely there is a difference between the creatures: between what was created first and what was created on the sixth day, closer to Shabbos. It is brought in the books that 'six days Hashem made heaven and earth': the six days themselves were created, as a circle around the inner point, which is Shabbos. Even so, there are differences.

Section three. What our Sages said, that it would have been better for a man not to have been created than to have been created, and what is written, 'and better than both is the one who has not yet been', is astonishing: if so, what was he created for?

Surely these words are said only about this world: by the troubles of this world and the suffering each person bears in it, it would surely be better not to have been created at all. But for the World to Come, it is surely better to have been created, for precisely through this one comes to the purpose. And even in this world, one hour of teshuvah and good deeds in this world is better than all the life of the World to Come.

Section four. Nissan is the new year for kings. Then all the kings are appointed above, and surely gifts are given to each one who is crowned. May Hashem also give us a king and leader, a faithful shepherd, who can light up in us, as above.

'And we are the people at Your feet': those who go after Your counsel, who follow the leader. If only we had a leader like Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him!

Our explanation, step by step. The highest purpose is reached only through this lowly world and its creatures. A faithful shepherd can light that up even for the simplest. So we pray, with longing and tears, for such a leader.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Look slowly at a leaf, a stone, the sea, and ask what it says about its Creator. And pray for teachers who can help even the simplest of us see.

English: our own paraphrase of the Hebrew, written for these videos. It is not copied from any published translation.

Verses and teachings of the Sages appear only as Rebbe Nachman quotes them inside this Torah.

How the text is shown

The Divine Name is shown as ה' and voiced as Hashem. Other Names are written in the customary form No full Name is written or voiced.

Parenthetical source references inside the printed Hebrew are left off the screen to save space; the citation line names the source instead.

Long paragraphs are shown in consecutive pieces. Every Hebrew word on screen is from the edition above; nothing is reworded.

Cards labelled EXPLANATION (green), and every line marked 'our own reflection — not a quote', are our own words, not quotations.

Notes

Part 2, scene 4: A bracketed note in the Hebrew brings the Sages' reading 'do not read shamos, but shemos, names' (Berachos 7b).

Part 2, scene 12: The Hebrew closes: 'all this belongs to Torah 39'.

Part 1 — Every Creature Has a Purpose

Scene 3 · LM II:39 §1, on Tehillim 46:9 · paragraph §1.1

EN (our paraphrase): 'Go, see the works of Hashem, who has set wonders in the land.'

Scene 4 · LM II:39 §1, on Tehillim 104:24 · paragraph §1.2

EN (our paraphrase): For truly it is a wondrous and awesome thing, that Hashem created the whole creation, with so very many wondrous and awesome things in it: how many are Your works, Hashem! Even in this world alone, Hashem's wonders are mighty: He created minerals and plants and so on. Who can measure the greatness of Hashem in the creatures of this world, all the more so the other worlds? And all of it was created only for Israel.

Scene 5 · LM II:39 §1, on the Zohar and Taanis 31a · paragraph §1.3

EN (our paraphrase): And Israel themselves were created mainly for Shabbos, which is the purpose.

Scene 7 · LM II:39 §1 · paragraph §1.4

EN (our paraphrase): So surely every created thing holds the purpose.

Scene 8 · LM II:39 §1 · paragraph §1.5

EN (our paraphrase): And so higher and higher, up to the purpose, where that thing is joined to the purpose. For every single thing holds on to the purpose for which it was created: through it one can reach Hashem and serve Him, up to that purpose, where that thing ends and is joined to the purpose.

Scene 9 · LM II:39 §1 · paragraph §1.5

EN (our paraphrase): And each person must deepen his study in this, to know and recognise the greatness of the Creator in every single thing, in its form and likeness, in the details of its limbs and structure and the like, and to serve Him through this, until he comes to the purpose of that thing, which is Shabbos, the world of souls.

Scene 11 · LM II:39 §1 · paragraph §1.6

EN (our paraphrase): Now those with great minds can do this. But people of small worth like us today, all of us on a very low level, the level of the feet, how can we come to this knowledge? So we must long and yearn very much: if only we had a leader of the generation, a faithful shepherd, with the power to light this knowledge even into us, the feet, so we merit to come to the purpose,

Scene 12 · LM II:39 §1, on the Mechilta · paragraph §1.7

EN (our paraphrase): like Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, who from his very great level could light up even the lowest of the low, even a maidservant, as our Sages said: a maidservant at the sea saw what the prophet Yechezkel did not see. So even Yechezkel, so great a prophet, did not see what a maidservant saw in the days of Moshe. All this was from the greatness of the leader,

Part 2 — A Shepherd Who Lights Even the Feet

Scene 2 · LM II:39 §1 · paragraph §1.8

EN (our paraphrase): for Moshe Rabbeinu was the leader, and he could light up even the level of the feet. Even the feet, far from the mind, could still grasp and know the purpose, through the works of Hashem that He created in this lowly world. For through the greatness of the leader, the mind can be drawn even down to the feet, and then these feet can be greater than another mind.

Scene 3 · LM II:39 §1 · paragraph §1.9

EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'lechu chazu', go and see. Go, precisely: the feet, the tools of walking; they too will see the works of Hashem which He set in the land, in this lowly world, for through Hashem's works in this lowly land one can know and reach the purpose. And this is:

Scene 4 · LM II:39 §1, on Bereishis 2:19 and Berachos 7b · paragraph §1.10

EN (our paraphrase): 'who has set shamos in the land': the purpose is shemos, the initials of the purpose of the making of heaven and earth. The world of souls, the purpose, is clothed in and held by this lowly land; precisely through this lowly world one must reach the purpose.

Scene 5 · LM II:39 §1, on Yevamos 62a · paragraph §1.11

EN (our paraphrase): Truly it is a wondrous novelty that reaching the purpose, knowing Hashem, depends precisely on the creatures of this lowly world, and all souls must pass through this world to reach it. For the son of David will not come until all the souls in the guf are finished; all must come to this lowly world, and so all of them need its creatures to reach the purpose.

Scene 6 · LM II:39 §1 · paragraph §1.12

EN (our paraphrase): We should say this with weeping, with tears, yearning and pleading before Him: when will we merit to know and recognise the Creator from every detail of this world, up to the purpose? And on our low level now, we need Hashem to have mercy on us and give us a leader, a faithful shepherd, who can light this knowledge into us, so we can serve Him properly and come to the purpose.

Scene 8 · LM II:39 §2, on Shemos 31:17 and the Zohar · paragraph §2.1

EN (our paraphrase): The six days are the beginning, in which everything was created, and Shabbos is the end and purpose. Surely there is a difference between the creatures: between what was created first and what was created on the sixth day, closer to Shabbos. It is brought in the books that 'six days Hashem made heaven and earth': the six days themselves were created, as a circle around the inner point, which is Shabbos. Even so, there are differences.

Scene 9 · LM II:39 §3, on Eruvin 13b and Koheles 4:3 · paragraph §3.1

EN (our paraphrase): What our Sages said, that it would have been better for a man not to have been created than to have been created, and what is written, 'and better than both is the one who has not yet been', is astonishing: if so, what was he created for?

Scene 10 · LM II:39 §3, on Avos 4:17 · paragraph §3.2

EN (our paraphrase): Surely these words are said only about this world: by the troubles of this world and the suffering each person bears in it, it would surely be better not to have been created at all. But for the World to Come, it is surely better to have been created, for precisely through this one comes to the purpose. And even in this world, one hour of teshuvah and good deeds in this world is better than all the life of the World to Come.

Scene 11 · LM II:39 §4, on Rosh Hashanah 2a · paragraph §4.1

EN (our paraphrase): Nissan is the new year for kings. Then all the kings are appointed above, and surely gifts are given to each one who is crowned. May Hashem also give us a king and leader, a faithful shepherd, who can light up in us, as above.

Scene 12 · LM II:39 §4 · paragraph §4.2

EN (our paraphrase): 'And we are the people at Your feet': those who go after Your counsel, who follow the leader. If only we had a leader like Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him!
