מִצְוָה גְּדוֹלָה לִהְיוֹת בְּשִׂמְחָה תָּמִיד, וּלְהִתְגַּבֵּר לְהַרְחִיק

Always Be Happy

It is a great mitzvah to be happy always and to push away sadness with all one's strength. Illness comes from damaged joy: ten kinds of song enliven the ten kinds of pulse, so joy is a great remedy, and in the future Hashem will lead the circle dance of the tzaddikim. Human nature pulls toward sadness, so one must force oneself to be happy, even with lighthearted things; a broken heart belongs only to a set time each day.

Explainer

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twenty four: mitzvah gedolah lihyos b'simcha tamid. It is a great mitzvah to be happy always. Perhaps Rebbe Nachman's most famous words.

He begins: it is a great mitzvah to be happy always, and to fight with all your strength to push away sadness and gloom. Then a surprising claim: every illness that comes upon a person comes only from damage to joy.

Why? There are ten kinds of song, and song is joy, as the psalm says: upon a ten stringed instrument, for You have made me glad, Hashem. These ten kinds of song flow into the ten kinds of pulse and give them life.

So when joy is damaged, the pulses are damaged, and illness comes, measure for measure. Even the physicians, he notes, wrote at length that illness comes from gloom and sadness. And joy is a great remedy.

In the future, joy will grow very great. The Sages say that Hashem will be the head of the circle, the machol, of the tzaddikim: He will make a circle dance for the tzaddikim, and lead it.

The word choleh means a circle, and it also means one who is ill. The Shechinah rests above the head of the sick, and gives him life. So in the future, when joy heals every illness, the choleh, the sick one, becomes the machol, the dance.

The rule, he says in section two: put all your strength into being happy always. Human nature pulls toward gloom, because of life's troubles, and everyone has their share of suffering. So force yourself to be happy, any way you can, even with lighthearted things.

A broken heart is also very good, but only for a while. Set a time each day to break your heart and pour out your words before Hashem. The rest of the day, be happy. A broken heart slides into gloom far more easily than joy slides into foolishness.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Joy is a mitzvah, so it takes effort, like any mitzvah. A niggun, a dance, even a joke can be holy work. And give your tears their own hour, so they don't take over the day.

— Part 1: Always Be Happy —

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twenty four: it is a great mitzvah to be happy always. A shiur in one part: joy, song and healing, and how to live with joy every day.

Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twenty four. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.

It is a great mitzvah to be happy always, and to strengthen yourself to push away sadness and gloom with all your strength.

All the illnesses that come upon a person come only from damage to joy. For there are ten kinds of song, which are joy, as it is written: 'upon a ten stringed instrument; for You have made me glad, Hashem, through Your deeds.'

These ten kinds of song enter the ten kinds of pulse and give them life. So when there is damage to joy, which is the ten kinds of song, illness comes from the ten kinds of pulse, which are damaged through the damage to the ten kinds of song, which are joy.

Our explanation. The heart beats in rhythms, and the old physicians counted ten kinds of pulse. Rebbe Nachman sets them beside ten kinds of song. Song, which is joy, gives the pulse its life; when the joy is damaged, the rhythm of the body falters.

For every kind of illness is included in the ten kinds of pulse, and every kind of melody is included in the ten kinds of song; according to the damage to the joy and the melody, so comes illness. The wise physicians too wrote at length that all illness comes through gloom and sadness,

and joy is a great remedy. In the future joy will grow very great. So our Sages said that in the time to come the Holy One, blessed be He, will be the head of the circle, choleh, for the tzaddikim: He will make a circle dance, a machol, for the tzaddikim, and He, blessed be He, will be the head of the circle.

He explains the word. For the Shechinah is above the head of the sick, choleh, as our Sages expounded from the verse: 'Hashem will support him on the sickbed'. For the sick person has no life at all; only the Shechinah gives him life.

In the future, through joy, every illness will be healed, and then Hashem will be the head of the choleh, that is, the head of the machol, the dance; for joy is the healing of the sick. That is why joy and dancing are called choleh: they are the healing of illness.

Our explanation, step by step. The same Hebrew letters make choleh, one who is ill, and machol, a circle dance. Above the sick, the Shechinah gives life. Joy heals the illness. And in the future, the circle of the sick becomes a circle of dancers, with Hashem at its head.

Section two. The rule: you must strengthen yourself greatly, with all your powers, to be only happy always. For human nature pulls a person toward gloom and sadness, because of the troubles and chances of life, and every person is full of suffering. So you must force yourself with great strength to be happy always, and to make yourself happy in any way you can, even with lighthearted things.

Even though a broken heart is also very good, it is only for some time. It is right to set yourself some time in the day to break your heart and pour out your words before Him, blessed be He, as we have taught; but the whole rest of the day you must be happy.

For from a broken heart one can easily come to gloom, more than one can stumble through joy, Heaven forbid, into some wildness; it is much closer to come from a broken heart to gloom.

So you must be happy always, and only at a special time have a broken heart.

Our explanation. Rebbe Nachman values a broken heart, the honest pain we pour out before Hashem, in hisbodedus. But it has a set time. Left to spread over the whole day, it turns into gloom. Joy gets the rest of the day.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Joy is a mitzvah, so it takes effort, like any other. A niggun, a dance, even a joke can be holy work. Give your tears their own hour, and then go back to joy.
