הַהִתְבּוֹדְדוּת הוּא מַעֲלָה עֶלְיוֹנָה וּגְדוֹלָה מִן הַכֹּל
Hisbodedus: Talking With Hashem
Hisbodedus, setting at least an hour a day to speak alone with Hashem in a room or a field, in one's own language, is higher than everything. Pour out everything in the heart: regret for the past, and pleas to come close from now on. Even when the words will not come, standing ready is itself very good, and that itself becomes a prayer. It is open to everyone, and it is good to turn the Torah one learns into prayer.

1-minute recap
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twenty five: hisbodedus.
Set at least an hour to be alone, in a room or a field, and talk to Hashem.
Speak in your own language, and pour out everything in your heart.
Even when the words won't come, standing ready before Him is itself very good.
Great tzaddikim reached their level only this way. And turn your Torah into prayer.
Our own reflection: Hashem is waiting to hear from you, in your own words.
Explainer
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twenty five: hisbodedus. Rebbe Nachman's central practice: talking to Hashem, alone, in your own words.
Hisbodedus, he says, is higher and greater than everything. Set yourself at least an hour, or more, to be alone in a room or in a field, and speak with your Maker, with arguments and reasons, with words of grace and pleading, asking Him to bring you close to serve Him in truth.
Speak in the language you speak every day. In his country that was Yiddish. In Hebrew, it is hard to say everything, and the heart does not follow words it is not used to. In your own language, the heart opens.
Tell Him everything in your heart: regret for the past, and pleas to come truly close to Him from today on, each person at his own level. Do it every day, at a set time, and be happy the rest of the day.
This is a general counsel that includes everything. Whatever you are missing in serving Hashem, even if you feel completely far away, talk about it and ask Him.
And sometimes the words are stuck, and you cannot open your mouth at all. Even this is very good: you are ready, standing before Him, longing to speak. And you can make a prayer from that itself: cry out that you have become so far, you cannot even speak, and ask Him to open your mouth.
Know, he says, that many great and famous tzaddikim said they reached their level only through this practice. And it is open to every soul, from the smallest to the greatest. Fortunate is the one who holds on to it.
Section two: it is also good to turn Torah into prayer. When you learn a teaching of the true tzaddik, ask Hashem: when will I reach this? How far I am from it. Help me come to all of it. This conversation rises to a very high place, and it brings great delight above.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Start small, but start today: a few minutes, a quiet place, your own words. And when nothing comes, say that. That is already a conversation.

— Part 1: Hisbodedus: Talking With Hashem —
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twenty five: hisbodedus. A shiur in one part: speaking alone with Hashem, in your own words, every day.
Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twenty five. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.
Hisbodedus is a supreme level, greater than everything: to set yourself at least an hour or more to be alone, in a room or in a field, and to pour out your words between you and your Maker, with arguments and reasons, with words of grace, appeasement and pleading, asking and begging Him, blessed be He, to bring you close to Him, to serve Him in truth.
Our explanation. Hisbodedus means being alone, alone with Hashem. Not a fixed text, but your own conversation: a set time, a quiet place, and words straight from the heart.
This prayer and conversation should be in the language you speak, which in our country is Yiddish. For in the Holy Tongue it is hard to say everything, and the heart is not drawn after the words, since we are not used to speaking it. But in the language we talk in every day, it is easier and closer to break the heart, because the heart is drawn to the language it is used to.
In your own language you can pour out everything. All that is in your heart, tell it before Him, blessed be He: regret and teshuvah for the past, and pleas to merit coming close to Him in truth from today on, and the like, each person according to his level.
Be very careful to make it a habit, every single day, at a set time, as we said; and the rest of the day, be happy.
Why is it so great? This practice is very, very great, and a very good path and counsel for coming close to Him, blessed be He; for it is a general counsel, which includes everything.
For whatever you lack in serving Hashem, or even if you are completely far from serving Him, about everything pour out your words and ask Him, blessed be He.
And even if sometimes your words are blocked, and you cannot open your mouth to speak before Him at all, even so, this itself is very good: the readiness, that you are prepared and standing before Him, wanting and longing to speak, only you cannot. This itself is also very good,
and you can also make a conversation and a prayer out of this itself. Cry out and plead before Him about this very thing: that you have become so far that you cannot even speak. Ask Him for mercy, that He have pity on you and open your mouth, so you can pour out your words before Him.
Our explanation, step by step. When the words will not come, keep standing there, ready. The longing to speak is itself precious. And then make the silence into a prayer: tell Hashem that you cannot speak, and ask Him to open your mouth.
Know that many great and famous tzaddikim told that they reached their level only through this practice. The wise will understand by himself how great it is, rising higher and higher. And it is equal for every soul, from small to great; everyone can practise it, and through it come to a great level. Fortunate is the one who holds on to it.
Section two. It is also good to make the Torah into prayer. When you learn or hear a teaching of Torah from the true tzaddik, make a prayer from it: ask and plead before Him about everything said in that teaching, when will I also merit to come to all this, and how far I am from it; and ask Him to help you come to everything said in that teaching.
One who is wise and truly wants it, Hashem will lead on the path of truth, and he will understand one thing from another how to do this, so that his words are words of grace and fitting arguments, to appease Him, blessed be He, that He bring him close to serve Him in truth.
This conversation rises to a very high place; and especially when you make prayer from Torah, it brings very great delight above.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Start small, but start today: a few minutes, a quiet place, your own words. And when nothing comes, say that. It is already a conversation.
