Grace Through Torah
The opening Torah of Likutei Moharan. Through Torah our prayers and requests are accepted, because Torah gives grace. A Jew should look for the wisdom in every thing (the letter ches, the sun); learning Torah with strength lets Malchus (the letter nun, the moon) receive that light, and ches and nun together spell chen, grace, which engraves a place in the listener's heart. The Gemara's wave that sinks ships is the evil inclination, beaten back by Torah, which is all Names of Hashem.

1-minute recap
Likutey Moharan, Torah one: Ashrei temimei derech.
Through the Torah, all our prayers and requests are accepted, and the grace of Israel rises again.
Look for the wisdom in every thing. That wisdom is the letter ches, the sun, the life of all things.
Learn Torah with strength, and Malchus, the nun, like the moon, receives that light. Ches and nun together spell chen: grace.
Grace engraves a place in the listener's heart, and then words are heard and requests accepted.
The evil inclination is a wave that tries to sink that grace. The Torah, all Names of Hashem, beats it back.
Our own reflection: look for Hashem's wisdom in what is before you, and learn before you ask.
Explainer
Likutey Moharan, Torah one: Ashrei temimei derech, happy are those whose way is whole, who walk in the Torah of Hashem. The very first Torah of the book, about how Torah gives grace, and grace opens hearts.
Rebbe Nachman opens with a promise. Through the Torah, all the prayers and requests we make are accepted, and the grace and importance of Israel are raised, in spiritual things and in material things too.
In exile, he says, that grace has fallen. But the Torah is called a graceful doe, because it lifts grace onto those who learn it.
How does it work? A Jew must always look at the intelligence within each thing, and bind himself to it, so that it shines for him and brings him close to Hashem through that very thing.
That wisdom is Yaakov, who took the birthright, the beginning. It is the sun, lighting every path. And it is the letter ches, chiyus, the life in every thing.
But that light is too great to reach directly. It comes through the letter nun, Malchus, kingship, which is like the moon: it has no light of its own, only what it receives from the sun.
One who ignores the wisdom in things is like Esav, who despised the birthright. Here are the two inclinations: the good one, a poor and wise child; the evil one, an old and foolish king.
What strengthens the good side? Torah learned with strength. As the Sages said: if the evil inclination meets you, drag it to the study hall.
Then the nun receives from the ches, and the moon shines like the sun. And ches and nun together spell chen, grace.
And when one rises, the other falls. The ways of Hashem are straight: the righteous walk in them and grow strong, and the evil inclination stumbles in them and is subdued.
Why are requests refused? Because the words have no grace; they find no place in the listener's heart. Grace engraves that place: the letter tav, a mark. Chen and tav together make nachas, as in: the words of the wise are heard when spoken gently.
So Yaakov, the man of wisdom, had grace, and blessed his children with it. And Yosef, the one most like him, blessed Binyamin: Elokim be gracious to you, my son.
Then a sailor's tale from the Gemara. A wave that sinks ships looks like white fire at its crest, and is struck with clubs engraved with a holy Name. The wave is the evil inclination, out to sink the precious grace of Israel.
Yosef's blessing says it too: his firstborn ox, majesty is his. The firstborn is wisdom; shoro also means looking; and hadar means light. Look for the wisdom in a thing, and even in a place of darkness, it shines for you and brings you close to Hashem.
Its white fire is the way it first comes dressed as a mitzvah. And the clubs are the Torah: the letter vav, shaped like a staff, and all of it Names of Hashem.
And so the verse: Ashrei, look; temimei derech, at the wisdom of Yaakov the whole man; who walk in the Torah of Hashem, learning with strength, until grace is born and every prayer is accepted.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Look for Hashem's wisdom in whatever is in front of you. Learn a little Torah with strength before you pray. And when a temptation looks like a mitzvah, check it twice.
Full shiur
— Part 1: Grace, and the Wisdom in Everything —
Likutey Moharan, Torah one: Ashrei temimei derech, happy are those whose way is whole. The very first Torah of the book. A shiur in three parts. Part one: grace, and the wisdom hidden in everything.
Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan, Torah one. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.
The Torah opens with the first verse of Tehillim, one hundred and nineteen. Happy are those whose way is whole, who walk in the Torah of Hashem.
Rebbe Nachman begins: Know that through the Torah, all the prayers and all the requests that we ask and pray are accepted. And the grace and the importance of Israel are lifted up and raised before everyone they need, whether in spiritual matters or in material ones.
He explains why: For now, because of our many sins, the true grace and importance of Israel have fallen, and the main importance and grace are with the nations. But through the Torah the grace and importance of Israel are raised up. For the Torah is called 'a loving hind and a graceful doe', because it lifts grace onto those who learn it. And through this, all the prayers and requests are accepted.
Our explanation. Chen means grace or favour: the quality that makes a person and his words welcome. Rebbe Nachman says that in exile the grace of Israel has fallen, and the Torah, called a graceful doe, raises it again. With that grace, both our prayers to Hashem and our requests from people are accepted. Now he will show how the Torah does this.
Section two. For a Jew must always look at the intelligence within each thing, and bind himself to the wisdom and intelligence that is in everything, so that the intelligence in each thing will shine for him and bring him close to Hashem through that very thing. For intelligence is a great light, and it shines for him in all his ways, as it is written: 'A man's wisdom makes his face shine.'
And this is the aspect of Yaakov. For Yaakov merited the birthright, which is 'reishis', the beginning, which is wisdom, as it is written: 'The beginning of wisdom.' And this is 'he has supplanted me, vaya'akveini, these two times', which Onkelos translates: 'he has outwitted me', with wisdom.
And this is the aspect of the sun, for the intelligence shines for him in all his ways like the sun. And this is: 'The path of the righteous is like the glowing light, growing brighter until the full day.'
And this is the aspect of the letter ches, which speaks of chiyus, life. For wisdom and intelligence are the life of everything, as it is written: 'Wisdom gives life.'
But because the light of the intelligence is very great, one cannot reach it except through the aspect of the letter nun, which is Malchus, kingship, as it is written: 'Before the sun his name shall rule, yinon', and Rashi explains: it is a word of kingship.
And this is the aspect of the moon. For the moon has no light of its own, only what it receives from the sun. And this is Malchus, which has nothing of its own except what it receives from the ches, which is wisdom, the sun, as said above. And then the light of the moon becomes like the light of the sun.
Our explanation. Here are the building blocks of the Torah. The letter ches is wisdom: the sun, the life and intelligence in every thing. The letter nun is Malchus: the moon, which has no light of its own and only receives. When the moon receives the sun's light, ches and nun are joined, and together they spell chen, grace. In the next part we will see what joins them, and what pulls them apart.
— Part 2: Esav, the Two Inclinations, and Words That Enter the Heart —
Part two: Esav who despised the birthright, the two inclinations, and words that enter the heart.
Rebbe Nachman continues with the opposite side. But one who does not bind himself to the intelligence, the wisdom and the life that is in each thing, that is the aspect of Esav, who despised the birthright, as it is written: 'And Esav despised the birthright', meaning the intelligence. As it says: 'A fool does not desire understanding, only to show what is in his heart.' And this is the kingdom of wickedness, the moon of the other side, of which it says: 'The moon will be ashamed.'
And this is the good inclination and the evil inclination. The good inclination is called 'a poor and wise child': it is Malchus, poor and lowly, having nothing of its own except what it receives from wisdom. And the evil inclination is called 'an old and foolish king': the Malchus of the other side, which does not desire wisdom and intelligence, as in 'a fool does not desire understanding.'
And each person must give strength to the holy Malchus so that it overpowers the Malchus of the other side, as our Sages said: 'A person should always stir up his good inclination against his evil inclination.' And how does he give strength to the holy Malchus? Through the Torah he studies with strength, as the Sages said there: if it goes away, good; and if not, let him busy himself with Torah. And as they said: 'If this repulsive one meets you, drag him to the study hall.'
Why the study hall? For through the Torah one gives strength to the holy Malchus. Then the Malchus, which is the nun, receives life from wisdom, which is the ches. The ches and the nun are joined and bound together, and the light of the moon becomes like the light of the sun.
And when one rises, the other falls: the kingdom of wickedness falls and is nullified. As it is written: 'For the ways of Hashem are straight; the righteous walk in them, and sinners stumble in them.' Through the ways of Hashem, the Torah, the tzaddikim who cleave to the holy Malchus grow strong and receive power; and the sinners stumble, the kingdom of wickedness, the evil inclination, which falls and is subdued through the Torah.
Our summary of section two. Look for the wisdom and the life within every thing, the ches. Learn Torah with strength, and the holy Malchus, the nun, can receive that light, while the evil inclination falls. When ches and nun meet, grace is born. Now: what does grace actually do?
Section three. And through this all the prayers and requests are accepted. For the main reason requests are not accepted is that the words have no grace. They do not enter the heart of the one being asked, as if there were no place in his heart for the words to enter, because the one asking has no grace that would let his words enter that heart.
But through the Torah, by which the nun and the ches are joined and bound, grace comes into being. That is why the Torah is called 'a graceful doe'. Then he merits that his words are words of grace, and his words and requests are accepted, like someone who speaks graciously, whose words enter the heart of the one he asks.
And this is the aspect of the letter tav. When the ches and the nun are joined and become chen, grace, through this the tav is formed, a word of engraving and marking, as it is written: 'And mark a tav.' For through the grace a place is engraved and marked in the heart of the one being asked, to receive the request; through the grace his words are accepted.
So the grace engraves a place in the heart of the one being asked, so that the words may enter his heart and he will accept the request; and that engraving and marking is the tav. And this is: 'The words of the wise are heard when spoken in nachas, gently.' Nachas exactly: the chen and the tav together make the letters of nachas, and then his words are heard and his request is accepted.
Our explanation. Rebbe Nachman spells it out letter by letter. Ches and nun make chen, grace. Grace engraves a place in the listener's heart, and that engraving is the tav. Put them together and you have nachas: the words of the wise, heard because they are spoken with grace. That is how Torah makes a prayer, or a request, enter.
— Part 3: Yaakov's Grace and the Wave That Sinks the Ship —
Part three: Yaakov's grace, and the wave that tries to sink the ship.
Section four. That is why Yaakov, who is the intelligence, merited grace, as it is written: 'For Elokim has graced me.' And so he blessed the tribes with grace: 'the children whom Elokim has graciously given.' Binyamin was not yet born then, so Yosef blessed him with grace, as it is written: 'Elokim be gracious to you, my son.'
And precisely Yosef could bless him with grace, because Yosef was more fully included in the aspect of Yaakov, as it is written: 'These are the generations of Yaakov: Yosef.' He was the main one of his offspring, for Yaakov and Yosef are counted as one.
That is why it is said of Yosef: 'His firstborn ox, majesty is his.' The firstborn is the intelligence. 'Shoro', his ox, also means looking: one must look at the intelligence in each thing. And 'hadar lo', majesty is his, Onkelos translates 'ziv', radiance: light. For the intelligence shines for him in everything; even in a place of gloom and darkness, the intelligence shines for him, when he merits to look at the intelligence that is there in each thing, and it brings him close to Hashem.
Section five. Now Rebbe Nachman explains a story of Rabbah bar bar Chanah, a sailor's tale from the Gemara. Rabbah bar bar Chanah said: That wave that sinks a ship looks like a tip of white fire at its head. And we strike it with clubs engraved with a holy Name.
Rebbe Nachman explains: The wave is the evil inclination. 'That sinks a ship', sefinta, is the grace and importance, from the word for something precious and treasured. For the evil inclination wants to sink and lower, Heaven forbid, the grace and importance of Israel, the holy Malchus.
'It looks like a tip of white fire at its head': at first the evil inclination dresses itself in mitzvos and misleads a person, as if it were urging him to do a mitzvah. That is the tip of white fire; and even so, it is a destroying angel.
'And we strike it with clubs engraved with a Name': the main way to subdue the evil inclination is through the Torah, which is entirely the Names of the Holy One, blessed be He.
And the Torah is the aspect of the letter vav, for the Tablets were six handbreadths long and six wide, and vav is six. And that is the 'clubs', the staffs.
'Engraved with a Name' means Names, the Torah, which is the vav. The vav has the shape of a staff, and the Torah is entirely the Names of Hashem.
That is, the holy Torah subdues the evil inclination, which wants to make a person truly mad, Heaven forbid. For a sinner is mad, as the Sages said: 'A person does not sin unless a spirit of folly enters him.'
And just as the mad were treated with blows and with Names written over them, so exactly the Torah we study is staffs and Names. With them we strike and subdue the evil inclination, and drive out of a person the madness and the spirit of folly that entered him: 'we strike it with clubs engraved with Names.'
Our explanation. The sailor's tale becomes a map of the inner life. The wave is the evil inclination, trying to sink the precious ship: the grace and dignity of Israel. It comes looking like white fire, dressed up as a mitzvah. And the only staffs that beat it back are the words of Torah, the vav, which are all Names of Hashem.
Section six. Now the opening verse, read again. And this is: 'Happy are those whose way is whole.' 'Ashrei', happy, is a word of looking.
'Whose way is whole', temimei, is the aspect of 'Yaakov, a whole man', tam, who is the intelligence. That is, to merit to look at the intelligence in each thing, which is Yaakov the whole man, one merits through the Torah. And this is:
'Who walk in the Torah of Hashem.' By learning Torah with strength, one gives strength to the holy Malchus, the nun, to receive from the intelligence, the ches. Then grace comes into being, and his words are accepted. Then the grace and importance of Israel are raised up, and all the prayers and requests are accepted.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Look for the wisdom of Hashem in whatever is in front of you today. Learn a little Torah with real strength before you pray or ask for something. And when a temptation looks like a mitzvah, check it twice.
This has been Likutey Moharan, Torah one. Ashrei temimei derech.

EN (our paraphrase): So the grace engraves a place in the heart of the one being asked, so that the words may enter his heart and he will accept the request; and that engraving and marking is the tav. And this is: 'The words of the wise are heard when spoken in nachas, gently.' Nachas exactly: the chen and the tav together make the letters of nachas, and then his words are heard and his request is accepted.
Part 3 — Yaakov's Grace and the Wave That Sinks the Ship
Scene 2 · LM I:1 §4 · paragraph §4.1
EN (our paraphrase): That is why Yaakov, who is the intelligence, merited grace, as it is written: 'For Elokim has graced me.' And so he blessed the tribes with grace: 'the children whom Elokim has graciously given.' Binyamin was not yet born then, so Yosef blessed him with grace, as it is written: 'Elokim be gracious to you, my son.'
Scene 3 · LM I:1 §4 · paragraph §4.2
EN (our paraphrase): And precisely Yosef could bless him with grace, because Yosef was more fully included in the aspect of Yaakov, as it is written: 'These are the generations of Yaakov: Yosef.' He was the main one of his offspring, for Yaakov and Yosef are counted as one.
Scene 4 · LM I:1 §4 · paragraph §4.3
EN (our paraphrase): That is why it is said of Yosef: 'His firstborn ox, majesty is his.' The firstborn is the intelligence.
Scene 5 · Bava Basra 73a, as quoted in LM I:1 §5 · paragraph §5.1, §5.2
EN (our paraphrase): That wave that sinks a ship looks like a tip of white fire at its head. And we strike it with clubs engraved with a holy Name.
Scene 6 · LM I:1 §5 · paragraph §5.3, §5.4
EN (our paraphrase): The wave is the evil inclination. 'That sinks a ship', sefinta, is the grace and importance, from the word for something precious and treasured. For the evil inclination wants to sink and lower, Heaven forbid, the grace and importance of Israel, the holy Malchus.
Scene 7 · LM I:1 §5 · paragraph §5.5
EN (our paraphrase): 'It looks like a tip of white fire at its head': at first the evil inclination dresses itself in mitzvos and misleads a person, as if it were urging him to do a mitzvah. That is the tip of white fire; and even so, it is a destroying angel.
Scene 8 · LM I:1 §5 · paragraph §5.6
EN (our paraphrase): 'And we strike it with clubs engraved with a Name': the main way to subdue the evil inclination is through the Torah, which is entirely the Names of the Holy One, blessed be He.
Scene 9 · LM I:1 §5 · paragraph §5.7
EN (our paraphrase): And the Torah is the aspect of the letter vav, for the Tablets were six handbreadths long and six wide, and vav is six. And that is the 'clubs', the staffs.
Scene 10 · LM I:1 §5 · paragraph §5.8
EN (our paraphrase): 'Engraved with a Name' means Names, the Torah, which is the vav. The vav has the shape of a staff, and the Torah is entirely the Names of Hashem.
Scene 11 · LM I:1 §5 · paragraph §5.9
EN (our paraphrase): That is, the holy Torah subdues the evil inclination, which wants to make a person truly mad, Heaven forbid. For a sinner is mad, as the Sages said: 'A person does not sin unless a spirit of folly enters him.'
Scene 12 · LM I:1 §5 · paragraph §5.9
EN (our paraphrase): And just as the mad were treated with blows and with Names written over them, so exactly the Torah we study is staffs and Names. With them we strike and subdue the evil inclination, and drive out of a person the madness and the spirit of folly that entered him: 'we strike it with clubs engraved with Names.'
Scene 14 · LM I:1 §6 · paragraph §6.1, §6.2
EN (our paraphrase): And this is: 'Happy are those whose way is whole.' 'Ashrei', happy, is a word of looking.
Scene 15 · LM I:1 §6 · paragraph §6.3
EN (our paraphrase): 'Whose way is whole', temimei, is the aspect of 'Yaakov, a whole man', tam, who is the intelligence. That is, to merit to look at the intelligence in each thing, which is Yaakov the whole man, one merits through the Torah. And this is:
Scene 16 · LM I:1 §6 · paragraph §6.4
EN (our paraphrase): 'Who walk in the Torah of Hashem.' By learning Torah with strength, one gives strength to the holy Malchus, the nun, to receive from the intelligence, the ches. Then grace comes into being, and his words are accepted. Then the grace and importance of Israel are raised up, and all the prayers and requests are accepted.
