Preparing to Travel to the Tzaddik

About people who prepare again and again to travel to the true tzaddik and then meet obstacles: Shabbos is the inner point from which the six weekdays, the circles around it, draw life. The forces of impurity lead the wicked around the point, 'the wicked walk all around', and keep them from coming in; yet as long as a person is still within the circles there is hope. The tzaddik is the aspect of Shabbos, the inner point from which all draw life.

1-minute recap

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty five: preparing to travel to the tzaddik.

People prepare again and again to go to the true tzaddik, and then obstacles stop them.

Shabbos is the inner point; the six days circle around it and draw life from it.

As long as you are still within the circles, there is hope to come close. The tzaddik is that inner point.

Our own reflection: the obstacles are only the circling; keep moving inward.

Explainer

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty five. A short teaching for anyone who keeps preparing to come close, and keeps being stopped.

There are people who want to travel to the true tzaddik, and prepare themselves many times, and then obstacles come and they are held back. Rebbe Nachman explains why.

Shabbos is the inner point. All six days of the week draw life from it; they are the circles around the point, as the Zohar teaches.

The forces of impurity lead the wicked around and around the point, as the psalm says: the wicked walk all around, and do not let them in. But as long as a person is still within the circles, even a sinner, there is still hope to come close.

And the tzaddik is the aspect of Shabbos, the inner point, from which everyone draws life. So the obstacles are the circling; keep moving inward.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. If you keep preparing to come close and keep being stopped, don't give up. You are still in the circles, and there is hope. Keep moving inward, toward Shabbos and the tzaddik.

— Part 1: Preparing to Travel to the Tzaddik —

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty five. A short shiur in one part: obstacles on the way to the tzaddik, and the inner point.

Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah forty five. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.

About people who want to, and prepare themselves several times, to travel to the true tzaddik, and afterwards have obstacles and are held back:

Know that Shabbos is the inner point, and from it all six days draw their life; they are the circles around the point, as is written in the Zohar.

The forces of impurity lead the wicked around the point, as in 'the wicked walk all around', and do not let them come close inside to the inner point. Yet as long as they are still within the circles, they still have hope of coming close; even sinners of Israel, as long as one has not left the circles completely, Heaven forbid, still have hope of coming close to the inner point. But one who has already left the circles completely, like one who abandoned his people, cannot come close at all.

And the tzaddik is the aspect of Shabbos, the inner point, from which everyone draws life.

Our explanation. Picture a point with circles around it. The point is Shabbos, and the tzaddik. The circles are the weekdays, and the long way round that obstacles force on us. As long as we are still in the circles, we can still come inward.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. If you keep preparing to come close and keep being stopped, don't give up. You are still in the circles, and there is hope. Keep moving inward, toward Shabbos and the tzaddik.
