Serving Hashem Only to Know Him

The true purpose is to serve Hashem only to know and recognise Him and to do His will. Some chase this world's pleasures and some serve for the World to Come; the second is far wiser and better, yet both are 'filling the belly'. Leaving money to children who were not raised in holiness only covers one leftover with another. King David chose neither: 'In righteousness I will behold Your face', and even the children he wished for were to complete the Divine image, as Tehillim 17:14–15 is read line by line.

1-minute recap

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty seven.

The whole purpose: to serve Hashem only to know Him, and to do His will.

One chases this world, one serves for the World to Come. The second is wiser, but both fill the belly.

King David chose neither: in righteousness I will behold Your face.

Even the children he wanted were for Hashem, to complete His image in the world.

Our own reflection: ask not what you will get from serving Hashem, but how to know Him.

Explainer

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty seven, on two verses of Tehillim: from those who die by Your hand, Hashem; and, in righteousness I will behold Your face.

The rule: the main purpose is only to serve Hashem and walk in His ways for His sake, in order to know Him and recognise Him. That is His will. A person should have no other aim in serving Him, only to do the will of the One who spoke and the world came to be.

Some people spend all their days chasing this world's pleasures, to fill their belly. Others work hard to earn the World to Come. But that too is called filling the belly: filling it with the World to Come.

That is the verse: their portion is in life, and with Your hidden treasure You fill their belly. Some choose their portion in this life; some choose the hidden good, the World to Come. Both are filling the belly.

The one who chooses the World to Come is wiser: he chooses the lasting world over the passing one, and it is surely far better to serve Hashem even for that. Yet it is still called filling the belly.

The verse goes on: they are satisfied with children, and leave their surplus to their little ones. A person who is not holy, who chases desires and leaves his money to his children, Rebbe Nachman says, covers one leftover with another. Money gained through desire is what is left over after the desires; and children not raised in holiness, he says strongly, are also leftovers. Holy money, and holy children, are very high.

But King David said: I choose neither. In righteousness I will behold Your face. He chose only to merit, through his righteousness, to see the face of Hashem and recognise the Creator.

Even the children he wished to leave were only for Hashem's sake: to complete, as it were, the Divine image. As the Sages say, one who does not have children diminishes the image; when a child is born, an image of Elokim comes into the world. So, I will be satisfied when I awake with Your image.

Section three reads the first words. Some die a natural death, when their life's strength runs out: they die from the world, mecheled. Others die early by Hashem's decree, as a punishment, and these have the World to Come; but those who live out their days with no suffering are the people of this world.

And still, he says, it is very good even to serve for the World to Come, and good to leave merit to one's children. Only the complete tzaddikim, who truly love Hashem, like David, want none of it: only to do His will.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Serving for reward is good, and Rebbe Nachman says so. But the higher goal is to know Hashem, and to raise a family that reflects His image. Ask not only what you will get, but how you can know Him.

Full shiur

— Part 1: Two Ways of Filling the Belly —

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty seven. Part one: the purpose of serving Hashem, and two ways of filling the belly.

Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty seven. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.

'From those who die by Your hand, Hashem, from those who die of the world', and so on. 'In righteousness I will behold Your face', and so on.

The rule: the main purpose is only to serve and walk in the ways of Hashem for His sake, in order to merit to recognise Him and to know Him; that is the main purpose, and that is His will, that we recognise Him. A person should have no other intention in serving Him, only to fulfil the will of the One who spoke and His will was done.

For there is one who works all his days and chases the desires of this world, to fill his belly with them. And there is one who works and strives to merit the World to Come; and this too is called filling the belly, for he wants to fill his belly and his desire with the World to Come.

Our explanation. Filling the belly means serving in order to get something. One person wants this world, another wants the World to Come. Rebbe Nachman points higher: serving only to know Hashem, and to do His will.

This is 'their portion in life, and Your hidden treasure, You fill their belly'. 'Their portion in life, and Your hidden treasure': there are those who choose their portion in life, to fill their desires in this world; and there are those who choose the great hidden good, the World to Come. Both are filling the belly.

So 'their portion in life and Your hidden treasure: You fill their belly'. Both groups, those who choose this world and those who serve for the World to Come, are 'You fill their belly': they want to fill their belly and their desire, this one in this world, and that one in the World to Come.

Only, the one who chooses the World to Come is wiser: he chooses the world that stands, lasting and eternal, and despises this world, which passes and ends. And in truth it is surely much better to serve Hashem even for the World to Come; yet even so, this too is called filling the belly.

And this is 'they are satisfied with children': their satisfaction is children, as is the way of the world, that all their work is to leave an inheritance to their children.

In truth, one who is not a holy man, who chases desires and leaves his money to his children, is like one who soils himself and covers the dirt with dirt. For holy money is very high, with many lofty and holy aspects, as explained elsewhere. But the money of this world's desires is what is left over, the surplus that remains after he has filled his desires in this world.

So too children who are not born in holiness are truly a leftover, coming from what is left over and unclean, as the Mishnah in Avos speaks of man's lowly origin; that is why children are called olelim, which Rashi explains as a word for soiling.

One who leaves such children, it is a disgrace; so he wants to cover them and adorn them with money, which is also complete leftover, remaining after all the desires. That is the inheritance he leaves them after his death: he covers leftover with leftover.

And this is 'they are satisfied with children': their satisfaction is children, for whom they spend their days. 'And they leave their surplus to their little ones': they cover their little ones, who are also leftovers, with leftovers, the inheritance for which they spent their days.

Our explanation, step by step. Their portion in life: those who want this world. And Your hidden treasure: those who want the World to Come. Both fill the belly. And they are satisfied with children, leaving them what remains.

— Part 2: In Righteousness I Will Behold Your Face —

Part two: King David's choice, in righteousness I will behold Your face, and the two kinds of death.

Section two. But I choose neither of these two groups for myself, only to merit to behold the pleasantness of Hashem: 'In righteousness I will behold Your face'. King David said that he chose only to merit, through his righteousness, to behold the face of Hashem and to recognise the Creator,

and even the children he wishes to leave, his intention is only for Hashem's sake, to complete, as it were, His image and likeness; for holy children are very high. As our Sages said: whoever does not engage in having children, it is as if he diminishes the image. For when a son is born into the world, an image of Elokim, as it were, comes into the world, and His image is completed.

And this is 'I will be satisfied': the satisfaction of children, 'they are satisfied with children', is only 'when I awake with Your image'. His main satisfaction in children is only that through them he awakens and arouses the image of Hashem, His image and likeness.

Our explanation. Every child born into the world brings the Divine image with him. That is why holy children are so high. King David wanted children only for this: to complete Hashem's image in the world.

Section three. And this is 'from those who die by Your hand, Hashem'. For some die a natural death: they are born with a root strength and other such things, by which they are fit to live so many years, and they live all those years until their strength and vitality are used up, and they die from the world, mecheled. This is 'from those who die of the world'.

And there are some on whom Hashem decrees death before their time, as a punishment: this is 'from those who die by Your hand, Hashem'; and these deserve the World to Come, since they died before their time. But those who die of the world are people of this world, who have no World to Come, for they live and last in this world without any punishment, until they die of the world.

And King David spoke of these two groups, the people of this world and the people of the World to Come. And this is:

'from those who die by Your hand, Hashem, from those who die of the world': from those who die through Hashem, who have the World to Come; and from those who die of the world, the people of this world. And this is:

'their portion in life, and Your hidden treasure': the two groups, both of which are 'You fill their belly', filling the belly in this world or in the World to Come. And this is:

'they are satisfied with children, and leave their surplus to their little ones'. And even one who chooses the World to Come and wants to leave his merit to his children, this too is 'they are satisfied with children, and leave'.

But I choose for myself neither of these two groups: 'in righteousness I will behold Your face', that with all my righteousness I may merit to behold the face of Hashem; 'I will be satisfied when I awake with Your image'.

And with all this, it is very good even for one who serves for the World to Come. And it is also good to leave one's merit to one's children, as is brought: a person should not receive all his reward, but leave some of his merit to his children after him.

Only the complete tzaddikim, who truly love Hashem, like David and his like, choose none of this at all: they want neither this world, nor the World to Come, nor to leave their merit and righteousness to their children; only to fulfil His will.

Our explanation, step by step. Some choose this world, the passing portion. Some choose the World to Come, which is wiser and very good. And the complete tzaddik chooses only His will: to know Hashem, and behold His face.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Serving for reward is good, and Rebbe Nachman says so. But the higher goal is to know Hashem, and to raise a family that reflects His image.

Notes

Part 1, scene 12: This paragraph is harsh in the Hebrew; our English summarises it briefly. Its point is the contrast with children brought into the world in holiness, which the Rebbe calls very high in section two.

EN (our paraphrase): The rule: the main purpose is only to serve and walk in the ways of Hashem for His sake, in order to merit to recognise Him and to know Him; that is the main purpose, and that is His will, that we recognise Him. A person should have no other intention in serving Him, only to fulfil the will of the One who spoke and His will was done.

Scene 5 · LM II:37 §1 · paragraph §1.3

EN (our paraphrase): For there is one who works all his days and chases the desires of this world, to fill his belly with them. And there is one who works and strives to merit the World to Come; and this too is called filling the belly, for he wants to fill his belly and his desire with the World to Come.

Scene 7 · LM II:37 §1, on Tehillim 17:14 · paragraph §1.4

EN (our paraphrase): This is 'their portion in life, and Your hidden treasure, You fill their belly'. 'Their portion in life, and Your hidden treasure': there are those who choose their portion in life, to fill their desires in this world; and there are those who choose the great hidden good, the World to Come. Both are filling the belly.

Scene 8 · LM II:37 §1 · paragraph §1.5

EN (our paraphrase): So 'their portion in life and Your hidden treasure: You fill their belly'. Both groups, those who choose this world and those who serve for the World to Come, are 'You fill their belly': they want to fill their belly and their desire, this one in this world, and that one in the World to Come.

Scene 9 · LM II:37 §1 · paragraph §1.6

EN (our paraphrase): Only, the one who chooses the World to Come is wiser: he chooses the world that stands, lasting and eternal, and despises this world, which passes and ends. And in truth it is surely much better to serve Hashem even for the World to Come; yet even so, this too is called filling the belly.

Scene 10 · LM II:37 §1, on Tehillim 17:14 · paragraph §1.7

EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'they are satisfied with children': their satisfaction is children, as is the way of the world, that all their work is to leave an inheritance to their children.

Scene 11 · LM II:37 §1 · paragraph §1.8

EN (our paraphrase): In truth, one who is not a holy man, who chases desires and leaves his money to his children, is like one who soils himself and covers the dirt with dirt. For holy money is very high, with many lofty and holy aspects, as explained elsewhere. But the money of this world's desires is what is left over, the surplus that remains after he has filled his desires in this world.

Scene 12 · LM II:37 §1, on Avos 3 and Rashi on Tehillim 8 · paragraph §1.9

EN (our paraphrase): So too children who are not born in holiness are truly a leftover, coming from what is left over and unclean, as the Mishnah in Avos speaks of man's lowly origin; that is why children are called olelim, which Rashi explains as a word for soiling.

Scene 13 · LM II:37 §1 · paragraph §1.10

EN (our paraphrase): One who leaves such children, it is a disgrace; so he wants to cover them and adorn them with money, which is also complete leftover, remaining after all the desires. That is the inheritance he leaves them after his death: he covers leftover with leftover.

Scene 14 · LM II:37 §1, on Tehillim 17:14 · paragraph §1.10

EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'they are satisfied with children': their satisfaction is children, for whom they spend their days. 'And they leave their surplus to their little ones': they cover their little ones, who are also leftovers, with leftovers, the inheritance for which they spent their days.

Part 2 — In Righteousness I Will Behold Your Face

Scene 2 · LM II:37 §2, on Tehillim 17:15 · paragraph §2.1

EN (our paraphrase): But I choose neither of these two groups for myself, only to merit to behold the pleasantness of Hashem: 'In righteousness I will behold Your face'. King David said that he chose only to merit, through his righteousness, to behold the face of Hashem and to recognise the Creator,

Scene 3 · LM II:37 §2, on Yevamos 63b · paragraph §2.2

EN (our paraphrase): and even the children he wishes to leave, his intention is only for Hashem's sake, to complete, as it were, His image and likeness; for holy children are very high. As our Sages said: whoever does not engage in having children, it is as if he diminishes the image. For when a son is born into the world, an image of Elokim, as it were, comes into the world, and His image is completed.

Scene 4 · LM II:37 §2, on Tehillim 17:15 · paragraph §2.3

EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'I will be satisfied': the satisfaction of children, 'they are satisfied with children', is only 'when I awake with Your image'. His main satisfaction in children is only that through them he awakens and arouses the image of Hashem, His image and likeness.

Scene 6 · LM II:37 §3 · paragraph §3.1

EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'from those who die by Your hand, Hashem'. For some die a natural death: they are born with a root strength and other such things, by which they are fit to live so many years, and they live all those years until their strength and vitality are used up, and they die from the world, mecheled. This is 'from those who die of the world'.

Scene 7 · LM II:37 §3 · paragraph §3.2

EN (our paraphrase): And there are some on whom Hashem decrees death before their time, as a punishment: this is 'from those who die by Your hand, Hashem'; and these deserve the World to Come, since they died before their time. But those who die of the world are people of this world, who have no World to Come, for they live and last in this world without any punishment, until they die of the world.

Scene 8 · LM II:37 §3, on Tehillim 17:14 · paragraph §3.3

EN (our paraphrase): And King David spoke of these two groups, the people of this world and the people of the World to Come. And this is:

Scene 9 · LM II:37 §3 · paragraph §3.4

EN (our paraphrase): 'from those who die by Your hand, Hashem, from those who die of the world': from those who die through Hashem, who have the World to Come; and from those who die of the world, the people of this world. And this is:

Scene 10 · LM II:37 §3 · paragraph §3.5

EN (our paraphrase): 'their portion in life, and Your hidden treasure': the two groups, both of which are 'You fill their belly', filling the belly in this world or in the World to Come. And this is:

Scene 11 · LM II:37 §3 · paragraph §3.6

EN (our paraphrase): 'they are satisfied with children, and leave their surplus to their little ones'. And even one who chooses the World to Come and wants to leave his merit to his children, this too is 'they are satisfied with children, and leave'.

Scene 12 · LM II:37 §3, on Tehillim 17:15 · paragraph §3.7

EN (our paraphrase): But I choose for myself neither of these two groups: 'in righteousness I will behold Your face', that with all my righteousness I may merit to behold the face of Hashem; 'I will be satisfied when I awake with Your image'.

Scene 13 · LM II:37 §3 · paragraph §3.8

EN (our paraphrase): And with all this, it is very good even for one who serves for the World to Come. And it is also good to leave one's merit to one's children, as is brought: a person should not receive all his reward, but leave some of his merit to his children after him.

Scene 14 · LM II:37 §3 · paragraph §3.9

EN (our paraphrase): Only the complete tzaddikim, who truly love Hashem, like David and his like, choose none of this at all: they want neither this world, nor the World to Come, nor to leave their merit and righteousness to their children; only to fulfil His will.
