Explainer

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty five. A teaching of a single sentence: those who learn Torah, and knowing the future.

Rebbe Nachman says: it is fitting for those who learn Torah to know what will happen.

As the psalm says: kedem yadati, which he reads as, I know beforehand, mikodem, what will be. And from where? Me'eidosecha, from Your testimonies: from the Torah.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. The Torah is not only about the past. Learned deeply, it lights the road ahead.

— Part 1: Torah Scholars Can Know the Future —

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty five. A short shiur in one part: Torah learning and knowing the future.

Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah thirty five. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.

Those who learn Torah are fit to know the future. This is what is written: 'kedem yadati', I know from before what will be. And from where? 'From Your testimonies', that is, from the Torah.

Our explanation. The word kedem means of old, and also before. The Torah contains what will be, and one who learns it deeply begins to see further ahead, by its light.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. The Torah is not only about the past. Learned deeply, it lights the road ahead.
