The Days of Chanukah Are Days of Thanksgiving
Chanukah's days of thanks are a taste of the World to Come, where only thanks and knowing Hashem remain. Thanks is halachah: after trouble the heart flows in order again. Learning halachos reveals truth, and truth completes speech through three Names — prayer, Torah and matches. Holy speech carries Shabbos joy into the weekdays and reveals Hashem's simple Oneness (why the halachah follows the many, as in the oven of Achnai). The Chanukah oil by the doorway is the light of truth in our words.

1-minute recap
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah two: Yemei Chanukah.
The days of Chanukah are days of thanks, a taste of the World to Come.
Thanks is halachah: after trouble, the heart flows in order again.
Halachos reveal truth, and truth completes our speech, through prayer, Torah and matches.
Holy speech carries the joy of Shabbos into the week, revealing Hashem's Oneness.
That is the Chanukah light by the door: the light of truth.
Our own reflection: give thanks, and keep your words true.

Rebbe Nachman opens: the days of Chanukah are days of thanks, and thanks is the delight of the World to Come. To thank Hashem is to know Him, and the more we know Him, the closer we are.
In the future, all the offerings will cease except the thanksgiving offering. Everything else falls away; only thanks and knowing Hashem remain.
That delight is found in halachos: learning them, and finding something new in them. Whoever learns halachos every day is a son of the World to Come, because each new halachah renews understanding.
Why are thanks and halachah connected? In trouble, the heart feels it most. All the blood rushes to the heart, like a town in danger crowding around its wise man for advice, and the heart pounds under the pressure.
When salvation comes, the blood walks again in its proper order. Halachah means walking. So thanks, which we bring on leaving trouble, is called halachah: the heart at peace, flowing in order again.
Halachah is also a kind of birth. Those who support Torah scholars feel the loss of their money at first, but through their support halachos are born, and that kindness fills their lack again.
In the future, the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun: every lack filled. That is the delight of the World to Come.
King Asa took Torah scholars away from their learning, and he became ill in his feet. Halachos, the orderly walking, are the strength of the feet.
Thanks and halachos reveal truth, and truth completes speech. Even a lie stands only on some truth inside it. Truth shines into speech through three Names: Kel, Elokim, Hashem.
Speech has four parts. Moshe said: I am not a man of words, not since yesterday, nor the day before, nor since You spoke. Those four phrases are the speech of kindness, of teshuvah, of those heard by rulers, and of kingship.
Kel is prayer, the Name of strength: through prayer, as it were, we take strength and can even change a decree, and prayer is only through truth. Elokim is Torah, the teacher who guides his students on a straight path.
And the Name Hashem is matches: a sensible wife is from Hashem. When people are joined, the parts of speech come together and are made whole.
Whole speech is the holy tongue, and the holy tongue is bound to Shabbos: your speech on Shabbos should not be like your weekday speech. Through it, the joy of Shabbos is drawn into the six weekdays.
The weekdays are like a servant: hard work, and a heaviness, even in weekday mitzvos. Shabbos is the son, at ease with his father. Shabbos lifts the whole week out of sadness.
And that joy reveals the simple Oneness of Hashem. Six days of changing creation, and the human mind cannot grasp how they come from the One. Shabbos, Hashem's good gift, shows that they do.
That is also why the halachah follows the many. Many minds agreeing as one reveal Hashem's Oneness in this world, and keep strife far from Israel.
So in the story of the oven of Achnai, Rabbi Eliezer called on a carob tree, a stream of water, the walls of the study hall, and a heavenly voice: the four parts of speech, complete. Still the halachah followed the many, and Hashem said: My sons have defeated Me.
And this is Chanukah. The oil is the light of truth. The lamp stands by the doorway, the opening of the mouth, because truth shines in our words. And Chanukah means 'they rested on the twenty fifth', a taste of Shabbos in the week.
Mikeitz, at the end of two full years: days of learning halachos that count like years. And oil heals the lungs, dried by the pounding of a troubled heart.
Finally, a segulah: Mizmor l'sodah, the psalm of thanks, helps a woman in difficult labour. Its letters add up to kindness, chesed.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Thank Hashem out loud. Learn one halachah a day. Let your words be true.

— Part 1: Days of Thanks, and the Delight of the World to Come —
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah two: Yemei Chanukah, the days of Chanukah. A shiur in five parts. Part one: days of thanks, halachos, and the delight of the World to Come.
A word on method. Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah two. Grey is a verse or teaching of the Sages that he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.
The Torah opens: The days of Chanukah are days of thanksgiving, as it is written: 'and they established these eight days of Chanukah to give thanks and to praise.'
Days of thanksgiving are the delight of the World to Come. For this is the essence of that delight: to thank and praise His great Name and to know Him, and through that to be near to Him. The more one knows and recognizes Him, the nearer one is.
For everything else will be nullified in the future, as in: all the offerings will cease except the thanksgiving offering. Nothing will remain but thanks and acknowledgement: to thank, to praise and to know Him, as it is written, 'for the earth will be full of knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea.' That is the whole delight of the World to Come.
Our explanation. Hoda'ah means both thanks and acknowledgement. To thank Hashem is to recognise Him, and recognising Him brings us close. Everything else will one day fall away, but thanks will remain forever. So the eight days of Chanukah are a taste of the World to Come.
This thanks, the delight of the World to Come, is halachos. The halachos one merits to learn, and especially to find something new in them, are the delight of the World to Come, as in: whoever learns halachos every day is assured he is a son of the World to Come. For when a halachah is renewed, understanding and knowledge are renewed, and knowledge is the essence of that delight.
This is: four must give thanks, explained in Psalm one hundred and seven, which ends: 'Who is wise? Let him keep these, and understand the kindnesses of Hashem.' The kindnesses of Hashem are halachos, as our Sages said: whoever keeps his student from serving him withholds kindness from him.
Serving the wise is halachos, the 'kindnesses of David', for the halachah follows him, as the Sages said: 'and Hashem was with him', the halachah follows him. That means he was near to Hashem, the delight of the World to Come, which is halachos.
That is why thanks is linked with the word halachah. Thanks is brought on leaving trouble. When one falls into some trouble, Heaven forbid, the trouble is mainly in the heart, for the heart knows and feels it most, as it is written, 'the heart knows its own bitterness.'
At a time of trouble, all the blood gathers and rises to the heart, just as when there is trouble in a place, everyone gathers to the wise man there for advice. The blood floods the heart seeking a plan against the trouble, and the heart is in great distress: not only does it worry, it is also pressed by all the blood.
So in trouble the heart pounds hard, trying to shake the blood off. Afterwards, when one leaves the trouble, the blood goes back to flowing in order through the paths of the body. That is why thanks, brought on leaving trouble, is called halachah: from halichos, the orderly going of the blood.
Our explanation. Halachah comes from 'walking'. In trouble, the blood crowds the heart and the heart pounds. When salvation comes, the blood walks again in its order. Thanks is the sound of a heart that is flowing calmly again, and so thanks and halachah belong together.
He applies this to birth. From this comes an easy birth: at a birth the blood rises upward, the space is pressed and the child is brought forth, and afterwards the blood returns to its place. This is 'thanks-halachah', the orderly flowing of the blood.
Halachah is also a birth. Those who support the Torah give money to Torah scholars; at first they feel the lack, since the money leaves them — like the cooling at a birth, for damim means both blood and money. But then, through their money that supports the scholar, halachos are born, which are kindness, and through the flow of kindness the lack is filled again.
This is the delight of the World to Come, as in 'the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun', said of the future. The moon is cold by nature, a lack, and it will be filled like the light of the sun: the lack filled, which is birth, halachos, the delight of the World to Come.
This is: 'these are the generations of the heavens and the earth, b'hibar'am, when they were created', which has the letters of b'Avraham, kindness. For birth comes through halachos, which are kindness. And 'a psalm for thanks, l'sodah, shout to Hashem all the earth': l'sodah has the letters of toladah, birth, and the words 'hari'u laHashem kol ha'aretz' form the initials of halachah.
Our Sages said: King Asa became ill in his feet because he conscripted Torah scholars for labour. By pulling them away from halachos he became ill in his feet, for halachos are the repair and strength of the feet, the orderly 'walking' of the blood. Asa blemished this, so his feet became ill.
— Part 2: Truth Lights Up Speech —
Part two: truth lights up speech, through prayer, Torah, and matches.
When one merits thanks and halachah, the light of truth is revealed and shines in speech. For at first, when the blood floods the heart, truth is blemished, as in 'men of blood hate the wholehearted.'
But afterwards, on leaving the trouble, which is thanks and halachah, truth shines, as in 'give truth to Yaakov, kindness to Avraham.' Kindness to Avraham is halachos, and through it truth shines and completes speech. For the wholeness of speech comes through truth: truth stands firm, and even a lie stands only by some truth in it.
So the existence and wholeness of speech come through truth, which shines into speech through three Names, as in 'Kel, Elokim, Hashem spoke.' These three Names are the source of truth, and through them truth shines into speech, into the 'four parts' of speech.
For speech has four parts. When Israel was in exile and speech was in exile, Moshe said: 'I am not a man of words, not since yesterday, nor the day before, nor since You spoke.' These are the four parts of speech.
There is the speech of tzedakah, as in 'I speak in righteousness.' This is man's advantage over the animal: speech, which defines a human being, and it is tzedakah, doing kindness with others, which is the way of man and not of the animal.
So 'let us make man', and of Boaz: 'the name of the man with whom I acted today'; as there tzedakah, so here tzedakah: through tzedakah one is called 'man'. This is 'I am not a man of words': the speech of tzedakah, as in 'good is the man who is gracious and lends; he conducts his words with justice.'
There is the speech of teshuvah, as in 'take words with you and return to Hashem.' That is 'not since yesterday', as it is written: 'return, children of man, for a thousand years in Your eyes are like yesterday.'
There is the speech of the wealthy who are close to the kingdom, the 'three branches' which the Sages explained as three ministers. They have a kind of speech, as in 'the grace of his lips, the king is his friend.' That is 'nor the day before', shilshom, like the three, shloshah, branches.
And there is the speech of kingship, malchus is the mouth. That is 'nor since You spoke', as in 'Your throne is established since then.'
Our explanation, as a list. Speech has four parts: the speech of kindness, which makes us human; the speech of teshuvah; the speech of those who are heard by rulers; and the speech of kingship itself. Moshe said, I am not a man of words, because in exile all four were hidden.
Truth shines into these four parts of speech through the three Names, Kel, Elokim, Hashem, which are prayer, Torah, and matches.
Our explanation. Three Names, three ways truth enters our words. Kel is prayer. Elokim is Torah. And the Name Hashem is the making of matches, the joining of people. Let us see each one.
Kel is prayer, for Kel means strength and ability. Through prayer Israel is called Kel, as the Sages said that the Holy One called Yaakov 'Kel'. For through prayer, as it were, we take strength from Him, since we can annul His decrees; so Israel is called Kel because of prayer.
As the Sages said on 'Kel is not a man who lies': he is not a man who makes the words of Kel false. Through prayer we annul His decrees, and then Israel is called Kel. From there speech shines, 'they will speak of Your might', through strength; and truth shines into speech, for prayer comes only through truth: 'Hashem is near to all who call Him in truth.'
Elokim is Torah, as it is written, 'you shall be to him for Elokim', which the Targum renders: a teacher. 'He will be your mouth': Torah shines into the mouth, into speech, for the teacher guides his students on a straight path. It is truth: 'a Torah of truth was in his mouth.'
Hashem is matches: 'the matter came from Hashem', and 'a sensible wife is from Hashem'. It is truth: 'who led me on a path of truth.' Through this speech becomes whole. Our Sages said ten measures of speech came down to the world, nine taken by women; so as long as there is no joining, speech is not whole, but when people are joined, the parts of speech come together and are completed.
So through the three Names, Kel, Elokim, Hashem, which are prayer, Torah and matches, speech is completed by truth: all four parts of speech, completed through truth.
— Part 3: Lashon HaKodesh, Shabbos, and Simple Oneness —
Part three: the holy tongue, the joy of Shabbos, and the revelation of Hashem's simple Oneness.
Wholeness of speech is Lashon HaKodesh, the holy tongue. All the languages of the nations are lacking; they are called a stammering tongue, and only the holy tongue is whole.
The holy tongue is bound to Shabbos, as in 'speaking a word': your speech on Shabbos should not be like your weekday speech. And 'so shall you bless', in the holy tongue, for blessing and holiness are included in it, as Shabbos is described with blessing and holiness: 'He blessed and He sanctified.'
So because the holy tongue is bound to Shabbos, through wholeness of speech, the holy tongue, we draw the joy of Shabbos into the six weekdays.
For the weekdays are sadness; even the mitzvos done on weekdays carry sadness, for the minister of the weekdays rules then, and he is a 'servant', which is sadness.
But Shabbos is a 'son', when there is ease above and below, and joy is awakened. Then all the mitzvos of the six weekdays are lifted up out of sadness, and rest and joy are drawn onto them, as in 'he named him Noach, saying: this one will comfort us from our work and the sadness of our hands.' Shabbos is the son, Noach, ease above and below, comforting everything from sadness.
When one merits the holy tongue, bound to Shabbos, one draws the holiness and joy of Shabbos into the six weekdays. This is 'Kel, Elokim, Hashem spoke', and the verse continues in the Midrash: 'a book of joy'. Through wholeness of speech, the holy tongue, joy is drawn down.
Our explanation. A servant works hard and carries a heaviness. A son is at home with his father. The weekdays feel like the servant; Shabbos is the son. When our speech is holy and truthful, it carries the joy of Shabbos into the whole week, even into ordinary weekday mitzvos.
By drawing the holiness of Shabbos into the six weekdays, the simple Oneness of Hashem is revealed. For the six weekdays are changing acts, a different creation each day, and the human mind cannot grasp how changing acts can come from the simple One.
Only through Shabbos, the great gift Hashem gave us, as the Sages said, 'I have a good gift in My treasure house, and Shabbos is its name', is the simple Oneness revealed. For Shabbos teaches faith in His Oneness: that all the changing acts come from the simple One, who created them in six days and rested on Shabbos.
This revelation of simple Oneness is very precious even to Him. As we find: an individual and the many, the halachah follows the many. The many each hold a different view, like changing acts; when they agree on one view, the changing acts become simple oneness, which is very precious in His eyes, so the halachah follows them.
It is also so as not to multiply strife in Israel; otherwise each one would follow his own view, without end, and strife would grow, which is not His will. His will is simple oneness, for when oneness is revealed below, His simple Oneness is revealed above: 'You are One and Your Name is One, and who is like Your people Israel, one nation in the land.'
Our explanation. Creation looks like many different things, one day after another. Shabbos shows they all come from the One. In the same way, many minds that come together as one reveal Hashem's Oneness in this world. That is why the halachah follows the many, and why strife is so far from His will.
— Part 4: The Oven of Achnai, and the Chanukah Lights —
Part four: Rabbi Eliezer and the oven of Achnai, and the lights of Chanukah.
This is the story of Rabbi Eliezer the Great and the oven of Achnai. The halachah follows Rabbi Eliezer everywhere, and he wanted to show that he had attained wholeness of speech, all four parts of speech, which come through halachos.
So he said: 'Let the carob tree prove it; let the stream of water prove it; let the walls of the study hall prove it; let a heavenly voice prove it.' These four are the four parts of speech.
For tzaddikim are 'mighty in strength who do His word': they act and lead with speech as they wish. Rabbi Eliezer wanted to show he had whole speech, so he could change nature by his word, and he showed it in four things, the four parts of speech.
'The carob will prove it' is the speech of tzedakah. A carob is planted only for future generations, as the Gemara says: just as my fathers planted for me, I plant for my children. So the carob is for generations, like tzedakah, as Rabbi Chiya said: when a poor man comes, give him bread first, so that it will be given to your children too; it is a wheel that turns in the world.
'The stream of water' is teshuvah, as in 'pour out your heart like water before Hashem.'
'The walls of the study hall' are the wealthy, a wall that everyone turns to, for 'the rich have many friends.' And they are 'the walls of the study hall', as in 'those who seek Hashem lack no good': the tzaddikim who seek Hashem, from whom all good flows.
Yet the merit of tzaddikim helps the world, not themselves. They have nothing; they only draw good into the world, as the Sages said of Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa: the whole world is fed for the sake of Chanina My son, and Chanina My son makes do with a measure of carobs.
So the wealthy are called the walls of the study hall: everyone turns to them because of their wealth, and all the good they have is drawn to them from the study hall, from 'those who seek Hashem lack no good', from whom all blessing flows.
'A heavenly voice' is kingship, for the voice comes from the six rings of the windpipe, which is kingship, as in 'six steps to the throne.'
So Rabbi Eliezer showed with these four that he had complete speech. Even so, they paid no attention, for with an individual and the many, the halachah follows the many: that is precious to Hashem, revealing simple oneness out of changing acts, which is Shabbos. That is why the Holy One said: 'My sons have defeated Me': their aspect of 'son' prevailed, for many agreeing on one view is Shabbos, the son.
This is 'serve Hashem with joy': draw joy into the 'servant', the six weekdays. And 'know that Hashem is Elokim': simple oneness, that all the changes are one, revealed when the joy of Shabbos is drawn into the six weekdays.
Our summary of the story. Rabbi Eliezer's four signs were the four parts of speech: the carob is tzedakah, the stream is teshuvah, the walls of the study hall are the wealthy, and the heavenly voice is kingship. His speech was complete. And still the halachah followed the many, because many hearts agreeing as one reveal Hashem's Oneness, like Shabbos.
This is Chanukah. The days of Chanukah are days of thanks, the delight of the World to Come, halachos, through which we merit wholeness of speech, through the revealing of truth.
This is the oil of the Chanukah lamp, as in 'Your tumim and urim are with Your devoted one': through kindness, halachos, the light of truth is revealed. The oil is the light of truth: 'send Your light and Your truth.'
It must be placed near the doorway, as in 'the opening of your mouth', that is, speech, for truth shines in speech: 'the opening of Your words gives light.' Then the joy of Shabbos is drawn into the six weekdays through the holy tongue, wholeness of speech.
And Chanukah is 'chanu kaf-heh', they rested on the twenty-fifth: Shabbos, ease, to which the holy tongue is bound, 'so, koh, shall you bless', in the holy tongue. And the joy of Shabbos shines into the six weekdays, which are also 'Chanukah', from chinuch, the 'servant' who rules on weekdays, as in 'this one will comfort us from our work and the sadness of our hands': the joy of Shabbos drawn into the weekdays.
Our explanation. Each detail of the Chanukah light fits. The oil is truth. Placing it by the doorway is the opening of the mouth, because truth shines in our words. And the name Chanukah, they rested on the twenty-fifth, is a kind of Shabbos, spreading rest and joy into the ordinary days.
— Part 5: Two Full Years, the Lungs, and the Song of Thanks —
Part five: 'at the end of two full years', healing the lungs, and the psalm of thanks.
This is: 'And it was at the end of two years of days.' Mikeitz, at the end, is halachos, the delight of the World to Come, which is at the end.
'Two years of days', as our Sages said about a student who was distressed over missing one day of learning, until Rabbi Yochanan expounded to him, 'Me they seek day by day': one day in a year counts as a year. So 'two years of days' are days that count as years through learning halachos.
When the heart is in trouble, the lung is in trouble too. The lung sustains the body, drawing moisture to the body against the movements that dry it. When the heart is in trouble and pounds, the lung blows hard and dries out, and the body dries, Heaven forbid.
And oil heals the lung, as people say, for oil moistens: this is the oil we spoke of, the repair of trouble.
At first, when a tzaddik is in pain and trouble, many souls in this world and the next lament and mourn over his pain, and the Shechinah laments too. But when he merits healing, all of them are comforted and joy is drawn to all, as in 'I will heal him and repay comfort to him and to his mourners.'
Know that 'Mizmor l'sodah', the psalm of thanks, is a segulah for a woman in difficult labour: to say it. Mizmor l'sodah has the initials mem-lamed, seventy, like the seventy cries of a woman before birth.
This psalm has one hundred and sixty eight letters, which is chesed, kindness, in the atbash cipher. Through kindness, halachos, birth is easy. And it has forty three words, gam, against the force that says 'neither mine nor yours', which does not want the child to come into the world.
Let us review the path. The days of Chanukah are days of thanks, a taste of the World to Come. Thanks is halachah: the heart flowing in peace after trouble. Halachos reveal truth, and truth completes our speech through prayer, Torah and matches. Holy speech carries the joy of Shabbos into the weekdays. And that joy reveals Hashem's simple Oneness, the light of the Chanukah lamp at the door.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Thank Hashem out loud for one thing today. Learn one halachah, every day. And let your words be true, and kind.

EN (our paraphrase): Serving the wise is halachos, the 'kindnesses of David', for the halachah follows him, as the Sages said: 'and Hashem was with him', the halachah follows him. That means he was near to Hashem, the delight of the World to Come, which is halachos.
Scene 10 · LM II:2 §2 · paragraph §2.4
EN (our paraphrase): That is why thanks is linked with the word halachah. Thanks is brought on leaving trouble. When one falls into some trouble, Heaven forbid, the trouble is mainly in the heart, for the heart knows and feels it most, as it is written, 'the heart knows its own bitterness.'
Scene 11 · LM II:2 §2 · paragraph §2.5
EN (our paraphrase): At a time of trouble, all the blood gathers and rises to the heart, just as when there is trouble in a place, everyone gathers to the wise man there for advice. The blood floods the heart seeking a plan against the trouble, and the heart is in great distress: not only does it worry, it is also pressed by all the blood.
Scene 12 · LM II:2 §2 · paragraph §2.6
EN (our paraphrase): So in trouble the heart pounds hard, trying to shake the blood off. Afterwards, when one leaves the trouble, the blood goes back to flowing in order through the paths of the body. That is why thanks, brought on leaving trouble, is called halachah: from halichos, the orderly going of the blood.
Scene 14 · LM II:2 §3 · paragraph §3.1
EN (our paraphrase): From this comes an easy birth: at a birth the blood rises upward, the space is pressed and the child is brought forth, and afterwards the blood returns to its place. This is 'thanks-halachah', the orderly flowing of the blood.
Scene 15 · LM II:2 §3 · paragraph §3.2
EN (our paraphrase): Halachah is also a birth. Those who support the Torah give money to Torah scholars; at first they feel the lack, since the money leaves them — like the cooling at a birth, for damim means both blood and money. But then, through their money that supports the scholar, halachos are born, which are kindness, and through the flow of kindness the lack is filled again.
Scene 16 · LM II:2 §3 · paragraph §3.3
EN (our paraphrase): This is the delight of the World to Come, as in 'the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun', said of the future. The moon is cold by nature, a lack, and it will be filled like the light of the sun: the lack filled, which is birth, halachos, the delight of the World to Come.
Scene 17 · LM II:2 §3 · paragraph §3.4, §3.5
EN (our paraphrase): This is: 'these are the generations of the heavens and the earth, b'hibar'am, when they were created', which has the letters of b'Avraham, kindness. For birth comes through halachos, which are kindness. And 'a psalm for thanks, l'sodah, shout to Hashem all the earth': l'sodah has the letters of toladah, birth, and the words 'hari'u laHashem kol ha'aretz' form the initials of halachah.
Scene 18 · LM II:2 §3, on Sotah 10a · paragraph §3.6
EN (our paraphrase): Our Sages said: King Asa became ill in his feet because he conscripted Torah scholars for labour. By pulling them away from halachos he became ill in his feet, for halachos are the repair and strength of the feet, the orderly 'walking' of the blood. Asa blemished this, so his feet became ill.
Part 2 — Truth Lights Up Speech
Scene 2 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.1
EN (our paraphrase): When one merits thanks and halachah, the light of truth is revealed and shines in speech. For at first, when the blood floods the heart, truth is blemished, as in 'men of blood hate the wholehearted.'
Scene 3 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.1
EN (our paraphrase): But afterwards, on leaving the trouble, which is thanks and halachah, truth shines, as in 'give truth to Yaakov, kindness to Avraham.' Kindness to Avraham is halachos, and through it truth shines and completes speech. For the wholeness of speech comes through truth: truth stands firm, and even a lie stands only by some truth in it.
Scene 4 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.2
EN (our paraphrase): So the existence and wholeness of speech come through truth, which shines into speech through three Names, as in 'Kel, Elokim, Hashem spoke.' These three Names are the source of truth, and through them truth shines into speech, into the 'four parts' of speech.
Scene 5 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.3
EN (our paraphrase): For speech has four parts. When Israel was in exile and speech was in exile, Moshe said: 'I am not a man of words, not since yesterday, nor the day before, nor since You spoke.' These are the four parts of speech.
Scene 6 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.4
EN (our paraphrase): There is the speech of tzedakah, as in 'I speak in righteousness.' This is man's advantage over the animal: speech, which defines a human being, and it is tzedakah, doing kindness with others, which is the way of man and not of the animal.
Scene 7 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.4
EN (our paraphrase): So 'let us make man', and of Boaz: 'the name of the man with whom I acted today'; as there tzedakah, so here tzedakah: through tzedakah one is called 'man'. This is 'I am not a man of words': the speech of tzedakah, as in 'good is the man who is gracious and lends; he conducts his words with justice.'
Scene 8 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.5
EN (our paraphrase): There is the speech of teshuvah, as in 'take words with you and return to Hashem.' That is 'not since yesterday', as it is written: 'return, children of man, for a thousand years in Your eyes are like yesterday.'
Scene 9 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.6
EN (our paraphrase): There is the speech of the wealthy who are close to the kingdom, the 'three branches' which the Sages explained as three ministers. They have a kind of speech, as in 'the grace of his lips, the king is his friend.' That is 'nor the day before', shilshom, like the three, shloshah, branches.
Scene 10 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.7
EN (our paraphrase): And there is the speech of kingship, malchus is the mouth. That is 'nor since You spoke', as in 'Your throne is established since then.'
Scene 12 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.8
EN (our paraphrase): Truth shines into these four parts of speech through the three Names, Kel, Elokim, Hashem, which are prayer, Torah, and matches.
Scene 14 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.9
EN (our paraphrase): Kel is prayer, for Kel means strength and ability. Through prayer Israel is called Kel, as the Sages said that the Holy One called Yaakov 'Kel'. For through prayer, as it were, we take strength from Him, since we can annul His decrees; so Israel is called Kel because of prayer.
Scene 15 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.10
EN (our paraphrase): As the Sages said on 'Kel is not a man who lies': he is not a man who makes the words of Kel false. Through prayer we annul His decrees, and then Israel is called Kel. From there speech shines, 'they will speak of Your might', through strength; and truth shines into speech, for prayer comes only through truth: 'Hashem is near to all who call Him in truth.'
Scene 16 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.11
EN (our paraphrase): Elokim is Torah, as it is written, 'you shall be to him for Elokim', which the Targum renders: a teacher. 'He will be your mouth': Torah shines into the mouth, into speech, for the teacher guides his students on a straight path. It is truth: 'a Torah of truth was in his mouth.'
Scene 17 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.12
EN (our paraphrase): Hashem is matches: 'the matter came from Hashem', and 'a sensible wife is from Hashem'. It is truth: 'who led me on a path of truth.' Through this speech becomes whole. Our Sages said ten measures of speech came down to the world, nine taken by women; so as long as there is no joining, speech is not whole, but when people are joined, the parts of speech come together and are completed.
Scene 18 · LM II:2 §4 · paragraph §4.13
EN (our paraphrase): So through the three Names, Kel, Elokim, Hashem, which are prayer, Torah and matches, speech is completed by truth: all four parts of speech, completed through truth.
Part 3 — Lashon HaKodesh, Shabbos, and Simple Oneness
Scene 2 · LM II:2 §5 · paragraph §5.1
EN (our paraphrase): Wholeness of speech is Lashon HaKodesh, the holy tongue. All the languages of the nations are lacking; they are called a stammering tongue, and only the holy tongue is whole.
Scene 3 · LM II:2 §5 · paragraph §5.2
EN (our paraphrase): The holy tongue is bound to Shabbos, as in 'speaking a word': your speech on Shabbos should not be like your weekday speech. And 'so shall you bless', in the holy tongue, for blessing and holiness are included in it, as Shabbos is described with blessing and holiness: 'He blessed and He sanctified.'
Scene 4 · LM II:2 §5 · paragraph §5.2
EN (our paraphrase): So because the holy tongue is bound to Shabbos, through wholeness of speech, the holy tongue, we draw the joy of Shabbos into the six weekdays.
Scene 5 · LM II:2 §5 · paragraph §5.3
EN (our paraphrase): For the weekdays are sadness; even the mitzvos done on weekdays carry sadness, for the minister of the weekdays rules then, and he is a 'servant', which is sadness.
Scene 6 · LM II:2 §5 · paragraph §5.4
EN (our paraphrase): But Shabbos is a 'son', when there is ease above and below, and joy is awakened.
Scene 7 · LM II:2 §5 · paragraph §5.5
EN (our paraphrase): When one merits the holy tongue, bound to Shabbos, one draws the holiness and joy of Shabbos into the six weekdays. This is 'Kel, Elokim, Hashem spoke', and the verse continues in the Midrash: 'a book of joy'. Through wholeness of speech, the holy tongue, joy is drawn down.
Scene 9 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.1, §6.2
EN (our paraphrase): By drawing the holiness of Shabbos into the six weekdays, the simple Oneness of Hashem is revealed. For the six weekdays are changing acts, a different creation each day, and the human mind cannot grasp how changing acts can come from the simple One.
Scene 10 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.3
EN (our paraphrase): Only through Shabbos, the great gift Hashem gave us, as the Sages said, 'I have a good gift in My treasure house, and Shabbos is its name', is the simple Oneness revealed. For Shabbos teaches faith in His Oneness: that all the changing acts come from the simple One, who created them in six days and rested on Shabbos.
Scene 11 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.4
EN (our paraphrase): This revelation of simple Oneness is very precious even to Him. As we find: an individual and the many, the halachah follows the many. The many each hold a different view, like changing acts; when they agree on one view, the changing acts become simple oneness, which is very precious in His eyes, so the halachah follows them.
Scene 12 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.5
EN (our paraphrase): It is also so as not to multiply strife in Israel; otherwise each one would follow his own view, without end, and strife would grow, which is not His will. His will is simple oneness, for when oneness is revealed below, His simple Oneness is revealed above: 'You are One and Your Name is One, and who is like Your people Israel, one nation in the land.'
Part 4 — The Oven of Achnai, and the Chanukah Lights
Scene 2 · LM II:2 §6, on Bava Metzia 59b · paragraph §6.6
EN (our paraphrase): This is the story of Rabbi Eliezer the Great and the oven of Achnai. The halachah follows Rabbi Eliezer everywhere, and he wanted to show that he had attained wholeness of speech, all four parts of speech, which come through halachos.
Scene 3 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.7
EN (our paraphrase): So he said: 'Let the carob tree prove it; let the stream of water prove it; let the walls of the study hall prove it; let a heavenly voice prove it.' These four are the four parts of speech.
Scene 4 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.7
EN (our paraphrase): For tzaddikim are 'mighty in strength who do His word': they act and lead with speech as they wish. Rabbi Eliezer wanted to show he had whole speech, so he could change nature by his word, and he showed it in four things, the four parts of speech.
Scene 5 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.8
EN (our paraphrase): 'The carob will prove it' is the speech of tzedakah.
Scene 6 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.9
EN (our paraphrase): 'The stream of water' is teshuvah, as in 'pour out your heart like water before Hashem.'
Scene 7 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.10
EN (our paraphrase): 'The walls of the study hall' are the wealthy, a wall that everyone turns to, for 'the rich have many friends.' And they are 'the walls of the study hall', as in 'those who seek Hashem lack no good': the tzaddikim who seek Hashem, from whom all good flows.
Scene 8 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.10
EN (our paraphrase): Yet the merit of tzaddikim helps the world, not themselves. They have nothing; they only draw good into the world, as the Sages said of Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa: the whole world is fed for the sake of Chanina My son, and Chanina My son makes do with a measure of carobs.
Scene 9 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.10
EN (our paraphrase): So the wealthy are called the walls of the study hall: everyone turns to them because of their wealth, and all the good they have is drawn to them from the study hall, from 'those who seek Hashem lack no good', from whom all blessing flows.
Scene 10 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.11
EN (our paraphrase): 'A heavenly voice' is kingship, for the voice comes from the six rings of the windpipe, which is kingship, as in 'six steps to the throne.'
Scene 11 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.12
EN (our paraphrase): So Rabbi Eliezer showed with these four that he had complete speech.
Scene 12 · LM II:2 §6 · paragraph §6.13
EN (our paraphrase): This is 'serve Hashem with joy': draw joy into the 'servant', the six weekdays. And 'know that Hashem is Elokim': simple oneness, that all the changes are one, revealed when the joy of Shabbos is drawn into the six weekdays.
Scene 14 · LM II:2 §7 · paragraph §7.1
EN (our paraphrase): This is Chanukah. The days of Chanukah are days of thanks, the delight of the World to Come, halachos, through which we merit wholeness of speech, through the revealing of truth.
Scene 15 · LM II:2 §7 · paragraph §7.2
EN (our paraphrase): This is the oil of the Chanukah lamp, as in 'Your tumim and urim are with Your devoted one': through kindness, halachos, the light of truth is revealed. The oil is the light of truth: 'send Your light and Your truth.'
Scene 16 · LM II:2 §7 · paragraph §7.3
EN (our paraphrase): It must be placed near the doorway, as in 'the opening of your mouth', that is, speech, for truth shines in speech: 'the opening of Your words gives light.' Then the joy of Shabbos is drawn into the six weekdays through the holy tongue, wholeness of speech.
Scene 17 · LM II:2 §7 · paragraph §7.4, §7.5
EN (our paraphrase): And Chanukah is 'chanu kaf-heh', they rested on the twenty-fifth: Shabbos, ease, to which the holy tongue is bound, 'so, koh, shall you bless', in the holy tongue. And the joy of Shabbos shines into the six weekdays, which are also 'Chanukah', from chinuch, the 'servant' who rules on weekdays, as in 'this one will comfort us from our work and the sadness of our hands': the joy of Shabbos drawn into the weekdays.
Part 5 — Two Full Years, the Lungs, and the Song of Thanks
Scene 2 · LM II:2 §8, on Bereishis 41:1 · paragraph §8.1, §8.2
EN (our paraphrase): This is: 'And it was at the end of two years of days.' Mikeitz, at the end, is halachos, the delight of the World to Come, which is at the end.
Scene 3 · LM II:2 §8 · paragraph §8.3
EN (our paraphrase): 'Two years of days', as our Sages said about a student who was distressed over missing one day of learning, until Rabbi Yochanan expounded to him, 'Me they seek day by day': one day in a year counts as a year. So 'two years of days' are days that count as years through learning halachos.
Scene 4 · LM II:2 §9 · paragraph §9.1
EN (our paraphrase): When the heart is in trouble, the lung is in trouble too. The lung sustains the body, drawing moisture to the body against the movements that dry it. When the heart is in trouble and pounds, the lung blows hard and dries out, and the body dries, Heaven forbid.
Scene 5 · LM II:2 §9 · paragraph §9.1
EN (our paraphrase): And oil heals the lung, as people say, for oil moistens: this is the oil we spoke of, the repair of trouble.
Scene 6 · LM II:2 §9 · paragraph §9.2
EN (our paraphrase): At first, when a tzaddik is in pain and trouble, many souls in this world and the next lament and mourn over his pain, and the Shechinah laments too. But when he merits healing, all of them are comforted and joy is drawn to all, as in 'I will heal him and repay comfort to him and to his mourners.'
Scene 7 · LM II:2 §10 · paragraph §10.1
EN (our paraphrase): Know that 'Mizmor l'sodah', the psalm of thanks, is a segulah for a woman in difficult labour: to say it. Mizmor l'sodah has the initials mem-lamed, seventy, like the seventy cries of a woman before birth.
Scene 8 · LM II:2 §10 · paragraph §10.2, §10.3
EN (our paraphrase): This psalm has one hundred and sixty eight letters, which is chesed, kindness, in the atbash cipher. Through kindness, halachos, birth is easy. And it has forty three words, gam, against the force that says 'neither mine nor yours', which does not want the child to come into the world.
