Blow the Shofar at the New Moon
A Jew is created to stand above the angels; to hold that place one binds oneself to all the souls of Israel, the 'Throne of Glory'. Rebuilding the heart in awe — helped by the three festivals — brings prophecy, which redeems prayer; prayer is the word of Hashem, the root of all healing, even through bread and water. Only Hashem, who holds every person's place, may judge, so Rosh Hashanah falls on Rosh Chodesh, in mercy. The verse 'Tik'u vachodesh shofar' holds it all.

1-minute recap
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah one: Tik'u vachodesh shofar.
A Jew is meant to stand above the angels. To hold that place, bind yourself to all the souls of Israel: hold on to the Throne.
Rebuild Yerushalayim, the heart, with awe of Heaven, and let the three festivals heal the three desires.
Awe brings prophecy, and prophecy redeems prayer from exile.
Prayer is the word of Hashem, the root of all healing, even through bread and water.
And only Hashem, who holds every person's place, may judge. So Rosh Hashanah falls on Rosh Chodesh, in mercy.
Our own reflection: pray slowly, and judge no one.
Explainer
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah one: Tik'u vachodesh shofar. Sound the shofar at the new moon. In about ten minutes, we will walk through the whole Torah, one of the longest and most beautiful in Tinyana.
Rebbe Nachman begins with a startling claim. A Jew is created to have dominion over the angels. In the future, the Sages say, the tzaddikim will stand further inside than the ministering angels, and the angels will have to ask Israel what Hashem has done.
But greatness invites envy. The angels are jealous of a person who stands above them, and they can try to push him away. So a person must make sure he has the strength to stand in that place.
The advice: bind yourself to the souls of Israel. When Moshe went up to receive the Torah, the angels objected, and Moshe was afraid. Hashem told him: hold on to My Throne of Glory. Rebbe Nachman explains that the Throne is the root of all Jewish souls.
Rav Amram Chasida told an angel: I am flesh and you are fire, and I am greater than you. Basra, flesh, hints at six hundred thousand souls in one womb. A person bound to all of Israel stands on the strength of the whole people.
He finds the same idea in the creation of Chava. Vayiven, He built, hints at a peg fastened in a firm place, a dominion that lasts. The rib, Chava, the mother of all life, is the root of the souls, the Throne that gives that strength.
How do you bind yourself to every soul? Through the true leaders of the generation, because the souls are divided beneath them. But beware: some leaders are famous only through brazenness, a kingship without a crown.
To tell them apart, a person must build Yerushalayim, which is the heart. Yerushalayim means complete awe of Heaven, the awe that lives in the heart.
Three desires destroy that Yerushalayim: the desire for money, the desire for food, and bodily desire. All three live in the heart, so they crowd out the awe that lives there too.
He reads them into the Gemara's three watches of the night: the donkey brays, money; the dogs bark, food; and the third watch, bodily desire. Over each watch, Hashem roars like a lion, over awe that has been lost.
The repair is da'as: drawing knowledge into the heart, as the verse says, know this day and take it to your heart.
Each of the three festivals renews the mind and heals one desire. Pesach heals the desire for money. Shavuos heals bodily desire. Sukkos, the festival of ingathering, heals the desire for food. So honour Yom Tov very much.
A heart rebuilt in awe creates an angel, and that angel brings prophecy into the world. The letters of malach, angel, spell the verse: for those who fear Him lack nothing.
But a person of awe must not chase after office. When Eldad and Meidad prophesied, Yehoshua said: my master Moshe, stop them, kela'eim. Rashi: give them public duties and their prophecy will end. Kela'eim has the letters of malach.
The spirit of prophecy redeems prayer. Prayer stands at the top of the world, yet people treat it lightly and rush to be rid of it. Prophecy lifts it out of exile and makes it whole.
And redeemed prayer heals. Every herb heals through its star, every star borrows from the stars above it, up to the root of all: the word of Hashem. Prayer is the word of Hashem, so it holds the root of every remedy.
Below, each herb has its own power. Above, in the root, all is one. So through prayer even plain bread and water can heal: He will bless your bread and your water, and remove illness from your midst.
Three things ruin prayer, three kinds of servitude: belittling any person, faith that is not whole, and not guarding the covenant. Leave them, and you can be healed by anything, as the Sages say.
Some illness grows hidden for years, like a seed in the ground, known only to Hashem. That is why the verse says: all the illness I placed on Egypt I will not place on you, for I am Hashem your Healer. Prayer heals the seed before it ever appears.
When a person prays, all the herbs and plants of the field return their power into his prayer. That is how Yitzchak went out to pray in the field: the plants of the field prayed with him.
This is why King Chizkiyahu hid away the book of remedies. He joined redemption to prayer, redeeming prayer from exile, and once prayer is redeemed, the remedies lose their power: every herb returns its strength into prayer.
Prayer rises like a fragrance, the one thing the soul enjoys. And Mashiach, called the breath of our nostrils, receives every prayer. His very name holds siach, the plants of the field.
Now the question from the start is answered. One who truly prays stands at the root that every power borrows from: he is the great lender. And no one is brazen before his lender, so false leaders fall away before him.
Speaking about another person is a kind of Rosh Hashanah: sitting in judgement. But do not judge your friend until you reach his place. Only Hashem, the Place of the world, holds every person's place, and He judges with mercy.
Such a person also finds grace, like Esther, whom each one felt belonged to him. All the powers on high receive from the one who prays, so each one feels close to him, and he comes to know every soul by name.
His mercy shows in the calendar. Rosh Hashanah falls on Rosh Chodesh, when, as it were, Hashem Himself says: bring atonement for Me. So we can ask forgiveness without shame.
And the verse holds it all. Tik'u: dominion. Vachodesh: the renewal of the festivals. Shofar: the heart, awe, prophecy, prayer, and the plants of the field. Bakeseh l'yom chageinu: the Throne, and a true Rosh Hashanah.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Feel part of all of Israel. Pray one prayer slowly. And be slow to judge anyone.
Full shiur
— Part 1: Dominion over the Angels —
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah one: Tik'u vachodesh shofar. A shiur in eight parts. Part one: dominion over the angels, and holding on to the Throne.
A word on method. Every card carries a label. Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah one. Grey is a verse or a teaching of the Sages that he quotes. Green is our own explanation, not a quotation. The Hebrew on screen is the public-domain text from Sefaria, and the English is our own paraphrase, kept close to the Hebrew.
Here is the map. Sections one to three: a Jew is meant to rule over the angels, and the way to hold that strength is to bind oneself to the roots of the souls of Israel. Sections four to seven: Yerushalayim of the heart, complete awe of Heaven, and the angel of prophecy it creates. Sections eight to eleven: prayer, healing, and the word of Hashem. And sections twelve to sixteen: Mashiach, Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Chodesh, and how all of it is hidden in one verse about the shofar.
The Torah opens with a verse from Tehillim, eighty one. Sound the shofar at the new moon, at the appointed time of our festival day.
Rebbe Nachman begins: A Jew was created to have dominion over the angels. This is Israel's goal and end. As our Sages taught: in the future the place of the tzaddikim will be further inside than that of the ministering angels, as it says, 'At that time it will be said to Yaakov and to Israel: what has Hashem wrought?' The angels will need to ask Israel when they want to know what Hashem has done.
Our explanation. The key word is memshalah, dominion. It is not about ruling over other people. It describes the standing of a Jewish soul, higher and further inside than the angels, so close to Hashem that the angels themselves must come and ask what Hashem has done.
But there is a danger. Each person must see that he reaches this goal, dominion over angels. But he must guard himself greatly and have the strength to stand in it, so that the ministering angels do not envy him and cast him down, Heaven forbid. For the angels are very jealous of one who rules over them, as our Sages said of several great people, whom the angels wanted to push away.
And the remedy: The advice for this is to bind oneself to the souls of Israel; through that bond one is saved from them. This is 'he holds on to the face of the Throne': one must hold on to the roots of the souls, which are hewn from beneath the Throne of Glory, which is 'the mother of all life.'
He brings a proof from the Gemara in Shabbos. When Moshe went up on high, the ministering angels said: what is one born of woman doing among us? He said: he came to receive the Torah. They said: 'You who set Your glory upon the heavens.' The Holy One said to Moshe: answer them. He said: I am afraid they will burn me with the breath of their mouths. He said to him: hold on to My Throne of Glory.
That is, Hashem gave him advice to hold on and bind himself to the roots of the souls, which are the Throne of Glory, the mother of all life; through that he would be saved from the angels' envy.
Our explanation. Moshe was afraid to stand among the angels on his own. Hashem's answer was: hold on to the Throne. Rebbe Nachman reads the Throne as the root of all Jewish souls. A person who stands alone can be pushed away. A person bound to all of Israel stands on the strength of the whole people.
He finds the same idea in the creation of Chava. This is 'Hashem Elokim built the rib that He took from the man.' The word vayiven, 'He built', is an acronym of 've'sakativ yased b'makom ne'eman', 'I will fasten him as a peg in a firm place', which speaks of dominion, as Targum Yonasan renders it: a faithful steward serving in a lasting place. That is the dominion we described, that it should endure.
This is the rib, which is Chava, 'the mother of all life', the Throne of Glory, the roots of the souls; through it there is strength to stand in this dominion.
He continues the verse. 'That He took from the man': the supernal Man, as it is written, 'and upon the Throne, a likeness like the appearance of a man.' 'And He brought her to the man': to the man below, who through this gains the strength to stand in this dominion.
And a story from the Gemara in Kiddushin. This is what Rav Amram Chasida said to the angel: 'I am flesh and you are fire, and I am greater than you.' Basra, flesh, is an acronym of 'shishim ribo b'keres echad', six hundred thousand in one womb, the roots of the souls. Through them he has the strength to rule over the angels: 'I am greater than you.'
Our summary of the first two sections. A Jew is meant to stand above the angels. That greatness invites envy from on high. And the protection is to hold on to the Throne: to bind oneself to the roots of all the souls of Israel, the six hundred thousand in one womb. In the next part, we will ask how a person actually does that.
— Part 2: Yerushalayim of the Heart —
Part two: knowing the leaders of the generation, and Yerushalayim of the heart.
How does a person hold on to the roots of the souls? To bind oneself to the roots of the souls of Israel, one must know the source of all the souls and the source of their life: from where each and every soul receives its vitality.
The main thing is to know all the renowned leaders of the generation. If one cannot know and bind oneself to each soul individually, one must bind oneself to all the renowned leaders of the generation, for the souls are divided beneath them. Each leader has many individual souls belonging to his portion, so when one binds oneself to the leaders, one is bound to every individual soul of Israel.
And a warning. But one must know and recognize the leaders, for some are renowned falsely, only through brazenness, as our Sages said: brazenness is a kingship without a crown.
Our explanation. Not everyone who is famous is truly a leader of souls. Some rise only through azus, brazenness, pushing themselves forward. The Sages call it a kingship without a crown. So Rebbe Nachman now asks: how can a person tell the difference?
His answer: To recognize which leaders stand only through brazenness comes through building Yerushalayim, which is the heart. For Yerushalayim is complete awe, the wholeness of the fear of Heaven that depends on the heart, as our Sages said: of a matter given over to the heart, it says 'and you shall fear.'
What destroys it? But there are three traits that destroy Yerushalayim, that is, the heart: they ruin the awe that depends on the heart. The three are the desire for money, the desire for food, and bodily desire. These three are in the heart, and so they ruin the awe in the heart.
Money is rooted in the heart, as in 'the blessing of Hashem makes rich, and adds no sadness with it', and 'He was saddened in His heart.'
Food: 'bread sustains the heart of man.' And bodily desire is also in the heart, since it comes mainly from heat, from the blood in the chamber of the heart. And because they are in the heart, they ruin the awe in the heart, which is Yerushalayim.
Our explanation. Three desires all live in the same place: the heart. The desire for money, the desire for food, and bodily desire. And because awe of Heaven also lives in the heart, these three crowd it out. Rebbe Nachman calls this the destruction of Yerushalayim within a person.
Now he reads a Gemara in Berachos. This is the meaning of: the night has three watches. Night is darkness, that is, obstacles, and the three watches are these three traits.
The first watch: the donkey brays. That is the desire for money, as in 'Yissachar is a strong-boned donkey', which the Targum renders: rich in possessions. The second: dogs bark. That is the desire for food, as it is written: 'the dogs are greedy, they never know satiety.'
The third: a baby nurses from its mother, and a wife converses with her husband. That is bodily desire.
Our explanation, summarizing the next passage. Rebbe Nachman teaches that the strength of this third desire is tied to a person's very first nourishment. When a child is nursed by a modest, upright mother, the heart stays cool and calm, with only the warmth needed to fulfil the mitzvos. That is why King David could say, my heart is hollow within me.
He brings a teaching of the Sages. This is what our Sages said: David was not fit for that deed, as it says, 'my heart is hollow within me.' The words 'libi chalal b'kirbi' form the acronym chalav, milk.
This is what our Sages said: on each and every watch the Holy One sits and roars like a lion. That is over the loss of awe, as in 'a lion has roared, who will not fear?' For these three traits, the three watches, ruin the building of Yerushalayim, the wholeness of awe that depends on the heart.
Our explanation. Each watch of the night is one of the three desires darkening the heart. And over each one, the Gemara says, Hashem roars like a lion. Rebbe Nachman hears in that roar a call to awe: who will not fear? The task is to rebuild Yerushalayim, a heart whole in its awe of Heaven.
— Part 3: The Festivals and the Angel of Prophecy —
Part three: da'as in the heart, the three festivals, and the angel of prophecy.
These three traits are repaired through da'as, knowledge. One must draw da'as into the heart, as in 'know this day and take it to your heart.' Through that, the three traits are repaired.
For da'as is the three brains, the three hollows of the skull, and these correspond to the three pilgrim festivals.
Each festival is a renewal of the mind: a new understanding is drawn down to repair these traits, one trait on each festival. Therefore one must be very careful about honouring Yom Tov, and receive the three festivals properly, for through the mitzvah of the three festivals we merit to repair these three traits.
On Pesach the desire for money is repaired, as it is written: 'Hashem gave the people favour in the eyes of Egypt, and they lent to them', against their will, because the people did not want it at all. For then the desire for money was repaired.
On Shavuos bodily desire is repaired. On Sukkos the desire for food is repaired, for Sukkos is called the Festival of Ingathering, when all kinds of food are gathered in. One who has bread in his basket is not like one who has none.
Our explanation, as a table. Pesach repairs the desire for money: the people did not even want Egypt's silver. Shavuos repairs bodily desire. And Sukkos, the festival of ingathering, repairs the desire for food, because a person with bread in his basket is calm. Each Yom Tov brings a new light of understanding into the heart.
He reads a verse from Bamidbar, sixteen, in a new way. This is 'called to the appointed time, men of name.' 'Men of name' are these three traits, each of which is called a 'name'.
Money, as it is written: 'In every place where I cause My Name to be mentioned, I will come to you and bless you.' Food, as it is written: 'and be famed in Beis Lechem,' the house of bread. Bodily desire: 'unless the king desired her, and she was called by name.'
And the awe in the heart is also called a name, as in 'to fear the glorious Name.' So 'called to the appointed time, men of name': we must call the festivals, the three pilgrim festivals, to repair these three traits.
Through building Yerushalayim, the repair of complete awe in the heart, an angel is created that bestows prophecy on the vessels of prophecy. Prophecy comes from the cherubim, as in 'he heard the voice from between the two cherubim.' The cherubim are small faces, and they receive from the angel, as in 'the angel who redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads.'
This angel is rooted in awe, for the letters of malach, angel, are an acronym of 'ki ein machsor lirei'av', 'for those who fear Him lack nothing.' Then prophecy flows, and even the young can prophesy, as in 'your sons and daughters will prophesy.'
Our explanation. Here the circle closes. At the start, the angels threatened a person's greatness. Now a person's own awe of Heaven creates a new angel, one that brings down prophecy. The four letters of malach are the first letters of the verse: for those who fear Him lack nothing.
But one must be very careful about taking a position of authority. Whoever attains awe longs to be appointed, for one who has fear of Heaven, his words are heard; and because his words are heard, he longs for an appointment. But he must guard himself greatly from it, for appointment ruins the flow of prophecy, the angel created through awe.
This is what Yehoshua said to Moshe when he was told 'Eldad and Meidad are prophesying in the camp': 'My master Moshe, destroy them.' Rashi explains: place the needs of the community on them, and they will come to an end. For communal needs, that is, an appointment, end and ruin prophecy, since kela'eim, 'destroy them', is made of the letters of malach.
Our explanation. A beautiful wordplay. Kela'eim, the word Yehoshua used, is built from the same letters as malach, angel. Public office can use up the very angel that awe created. Rebbe Nachman is not against leadership; he is warning a person of awe not to chase after it.
— Part 4: Prayer Redeemed, and Healing Through the Word of Hashem —
Part four: prayer redeemed from exile, and healing through the word of Hashem.
Through the flow of prophecy, even when no one actually prophesies, but there is an aspect of prophecy flowing in the world, prayer is redeemed and set free.
For prayer is very lofty, yet people treat it lightly. When they stand to pray, they want to be rid of it, as our Sages said: 'when worthlessness is exalted among men', these are the things that stand at the heights of the world, and people treat them lightly.
Through prophecy, prayer is redeemed from exile, as in 'for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you.' Through prophecy, prayer becomes whole, for prayer is 'He creates the speech of the lips', an aspect of prophecy.
Our explanation. Prayer can be in exile. It stands at the very top of the world, yet we often rush through it, just to have it done. The spirit of prophecy that awe brings into the world, even without actual prophets, lifts prayer back up and makes it whole again.
When prayer is redeemed and set free, then all the doctors fall away, because there is no need for remedies. All remedies come through herbs, and each herb receives power from the star and constellation assigned to it, as our Sages said: there is no blade of grass that has no constellation that strikes it and says to it: grow!
Each star receives power from the stars above it, and the higher one from the one higher still, until they receive power from the upper ministers.
As they said: all the stars borrow from one another; the moon borrows from the sun. They all borrow, one from the next, up to the upper ministers, and those from the ones above them, until all receive from the root of everything, the word of Hashem: 'By the word of Hashem the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their hosts.'
Therefore, when one merits prayer, there is no need for healing by herbs, for prayer is the word of Hashem, the root of everything.
Our explanation, as a ladder. The herb heals through the star above it. The star borrows from the stars above it, and so on, higher and higher, until everything draws from one root: the word of Hashem. Prayer is the word of Hashem. So one who truly prays is holding the root itself.
This is navi, prophet, an acronym of 'bidvar Hashem shamayim na'asu', by the word of Hashem the heavens were made; the aleph is the firmament that divides between the waters. For through prophecy one merits prayer, which is the word of Hashem.
This is: 'He sends His word and heals them, and rescues them from their pits.' 'He sends His word and heals them': all healing is received only through the word of Hashem, that is, prayer. Then 'He rescues them from their pits', from the herbs, as in 'the reaper of the field', since there is no need for healing by herbs.
This is: 'You shall serve Hashem your Elokim, and He will bless your bread and your water, and I will remove illness from your midst.' Service here is prayer. Then He will bless your bread and water: you will be healed through bread and water, because they are blessed from the root of everything, the word of Hashem, prayer; and bread and water will have the power to heal like herbs.
For the dividing of powers, that this herb heals one illness and that herb another, exists only below. Above, in the root of everything, the word of Hashem, all is one; there is no difference between bread and water and herbs. When one holds the root, the word of Hashem, prayer, one can draw the power of healing into bread and water.
Our explanation. Below, every power is divided: this herb for that illness. Above, in the root, there is no division at all. Prayer reaches that root, so it can draw healing into the simplest things, the bread and water on a person's table.
— Part 5: Three Servitudes, and Hidden Illness —
Part five: three kinds of servitude, and the illness that hides.
But there are three kinds of service that ruin the service of prayer. They are three traits: first, 'do not despise any person', not to belittle anyone; second, idolatry, and even a flaw in faith, faith that is not whole, is also a form of idolatry; third, guarding the covenant, one who does not guard the covenant properly.
These three traits are all services of the other side, and they ruin the service of prayer. Belittling people is a form of servitude, as we find with Yosef's brothers: because they belittled him and did not believe he would be king, they fell into servitude and said to him, 'here we are, your servants.'
Idolatry: as it is written, 'I am Hashem your Elokim who took you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.' The land of Egypt was full of idols, and so it is called the house of slaves.
Guarding the covenant: one who blemishes it is also in a kind of servitude, like Cham, of whom it was said, 'Cursed is Canaan, a slave of slaves he shall be.' One must go out of these three servitudes, these three traits; then one merits the service of prayer, and can be healed by anything in the world, even bread and water.
This is the meaning of: one may be healed with anything, except idolatry, forbidden relations and bloodshed; that is, these three traits. When one goes out of these three, then 'one is healed by anything', even bread and water.
Our explanation. Three things put a person in chains: looking down on anyone, faith that is not whole, and not guarding the covenant of holiness. Free of them, a person can truly serve with prayer, and then even plain bread and water can heal.
Now a new idea. Know that illnesses differ. Some illness is like a plant: like a seed sown in the ground that rots, and from it comes moisture and fibres, one on another, until a root forms; from it come branches, and from those branches more branches, until the fruit grows. So too there is illness that grows in a person for many years.
And there is illness that a person has from birth, from his father and mother, and it is revealed only in old age. While the illness sprouts and grows, it is hidden from every living eye; no one knows of it, except that certain small pains arise then, signs of the illness.
So too with healing by herbs there are differences. Some illness can be healed with one herb; a greater illness needs a compound of several herbs; some need remedies from far away; and some illness no remedy helps, because the power of the illness is greater than the power of the herbs.
At the very beginning of an illness's growth, before it sprouted and was revealed, it could have been healed easily. Only, at that time it was hidden from every eye, and no one knew of it but Hashem alone.
But when one holds on to the word of Hashem, prayer, receiving healing from everything in the world, even bread and water, then one can be healed even while the illness is still sprouting, hidden from human eyes. There is no need for remedies at all; the healing comes through bread and water. So even before the illness is revealed, one can be healed through the bread and water one eats.
This is: 'All the illness that I placed upon Egypt I will not place upon you, for I am Hashem your Healer.' All the commentators asked: if He will not place it, why is healing needed? But according to what we said, it is well understood.
'I will not place upon you' means He will not let you come to illness at all, because He heals you beforehand, at the time the illness sprouts.
'For I am Hashem your Healer': I, Hashem, precisely. At the time the illness sprouts, when no one knows of it but I, Hashem, then I will heal you through the word of Hashem, prayer, and you will not come to illness at all.
Our explanation. The verse sounds like a contradiction: if Hashem will not bring the illness, why does He need to heal? Rebbe Nachman's answer: there is a stage when an illness is still a hidden seed, known only to Hashem. Prayer reaches there and heals it before it ever appears.
All this depends on repairing prayer, and prayer is repaired by leaving the three servitudes. This is: 'If you will diligently listen, and do what is upright in His eyes, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes.' These are the repair of the three servitudes.
'Do what is upright in His eyes' is the opposite of belittling people. 'Give ear to His commandments' is the repair of the covenant, as in 'Avraham circumcised Yitzchak his son at eight days, as Elokim had commanded him.'
'And keep all His statutes' is the repair of faith, the opposite of idolatry, of which it is said: 'the statutes of the nations are vanity.' And then: 'all the illness... for I am Hashem your Healer', because prayer is whole, and one can be healed through the word of Hashem by everything in the world, even before the illness is revealed.
— Part 6: The Plants of the Field, Mashiach, and the Great Lender —
Part six: the plants of the field, the light of Mashiach, and the great lender.
This is what Chizkiyahu said: 'I have done what is good in Your eyes.' Our Sages said: he joined redemption to prayer, and he hid away the book of remedies. And it is all one: by joining redemption to prayer, he redeemed prayer from exile, and so he hid away the book of remedies.
For when prayer is redeemed, all remedies fall away, since one is healed through the word of Hashem. Then all the doctors are embarrassed by their remedies, for no remedy has power then: all the herbs return their power into prayer, the word of Hashem, their supernal root.
For this is the duty of all the herbs and all the plants of the field: when a person stands to pray, he is then the word of Hashem, their supernal root, and they return their power into the prayer. And when a person prays about a certain illness, the herbs that have the power to heal that illness are obliged to return their power into the prayer, which is their root.
This is: 'Yitzchak went out to meditate, lasu'ach, in the field.' His prayer was with the plants of the field, siach hasadeh: all the plants of the field returned their power and gave it into his prayer, which is their root.
Our explanation. A beautiful picture. When a person stands to pray, he stands at the root of all the healing powers in creation. The herbs and grasses give their strength back into his prayer. That is how Yitzchak prayed in the field: the plants of the field prayed with him.
This is the glimmer of Mashiach. For all things differ from one another in appearance, taste and smell. That is why what makes all plants grow is called matar, rain: an acronym of mar'eh, ta'am, rei'ach, appearance, taste, smell.
The main one is smell, for the soul enjoys only smell, as our Sages said: what is it that the soul enjoys and not the body? Smell. And prayer comes mainly from the soul, as in 'let every soul praise Hashem.'
And Mashiach receives all the prayers, for Mashiach is the nose, as in 'the breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Hashem.' He receives all the fragrances, which are the prayers, since prayer, coming from the soul, draws from smell. This is 'and with My praise I will restrain, echetom, for you', from chotem, the nose.
That is why he is called Mashiach: he draws and receives from siach hasadeh, the plants of the field, all the fragrances that come into prayer. And Mashiach receives them: 'the breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Hashem.'
Our explanation. Follow the chain. The plants of the field give their power into prayer. Prayer rises like a fragrance, the one thing the soul itself enjoys. And Mashiach, called the breath of our nostrils, receives every one of those prayers. Even the name Mashiach holds the word siach: the plants of the field.
This is finding grace, as in 'Esther found grace in the eyes of all who saw her': each one thought she was of his own people.
For this master of prayer is the word of Hashem, the supernal root from which all powers and all the host of heaven receive. Therefore every power on high feels he belongs to it: he finds grace in their eyes, and each one feels he is dealing with it alone, because all of them receive from him.
Then he can recognize the leaders who stand through brazenness, for their brazenness falls before him. When he merits prayer, the word of Hashem, the supernal root from which all the upper ministers and the host of heaven receive their power, they are all borrowers from him, as in 'all the stars borrow from one another.'
So all are borrowers, up to the supernal root, the word of Hashem, the master of prayer: he is the great lender, from whom all the host of heaven and all the powers borrow. As in 'and the host of heaven bow to You': they bow and submit to their root, the word of Hashem, the master of prayer.
The words 'utzva hashamayim lecha mishtachavim', and the host of heaven bow to You, form the acronym malveh, lender. All borrow one from another, up to the great lender, the master of prayer, who is the supernal root, the word of Hashem.
Therefore he can recognize the leaders who stand only through brazenness, because no one is brazen before his creditor. Their brazenness falls before the master of prayer, the great lender, since they all borrow from him.
Our explanation. Now we can answer the question from part two: how do you tell a true leader from a brazen one? A person who truly prays stands at the root that every power borrows from. He is the great lender. And a borrower cannot be brazen before the one he owes. False boldness simply collapses in front of real prayer.
This is 'for you have found grace in My eyes, and I know you by name.' Through finding grace, when all receive and borrow from him, and each one feels he is its own, he comes to 'I know you by name': he can know and recognize all the renowned leaders, the men of name; for whoever is renowned through brazenness falls before him.
'I know you by name' also refers to the souls, as in 'whatever the living soul is, that is its name.' For through the leaders he binds himself to all the souls; and this is 'he holds on to the face of the Throne', binding oneself to the roots of the souls, the Throne of Glory.
— Part 7: Rosh Hashanah: Who May Judge —
Part seven: Rosh Hashanah on Rosh Chodesh, and who may judge another.
Then one can make Rosh Hashanah. For when a person sits and speaks about his friend, that is Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgement: he sits and judges his friend.
One must be very careful about this, and look at oneself well: is one fit to judge one's friend? For judgement belongs to Hashem; only He alone is fit to judge a person, as our Sages said: do not judge your friend until you reach his place.
And who can know and reach his friend's place, except Hashem, who is the place of the world, while the world is not His place? Each and every person has a place with Him. Therefore only He can judge a person, for He is the Master of mercy, and He surely fulfils for us: judge every person favourably.
Our explanation. 'Do not judge your friend until you reach his place.' Rebbe Nachman takes it literally: no one can ever fully stand where another person stands. Only Hashem, the place of the whole world, holds every person's place. So only He may judge, and He is the Master of mercy.
And we see His mercy in that He set Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgement, on Rosh Chodesh. This is a great kindness, for how could we lift our faces to ask Him for atonement?
So He did us a kindness and set the day of judgement, Rosh Hashanah, on Rosh Chodesh, when, as it were, He Himself asks for atonement: 'bring atonement for Me', which is said of Rosh Chodesh. Therefore we are not ashamed on the day of judgement to ask for atonement, since He Himself, as it were, asks then for atonement.
Also, since Hashem Himself, as it were, came to say 'bring atonement for Me', having done something He needed to regret, we are not ashamed to come before Him with our sins, to ask atonement and regret them. So we see the greatness of His mercy.
Our explanation. The Sages teach that on Rosh Chodesh, about the moon made small, Hashem says, as it were: bring atonement for Me. Rebbe Nachman sees in this a great kindness. The day of judgement falls on that very day, so that we can ask forgiveness without being crushed by shame.
Therefore He alone is fit to judge the world, for He knows the place of each one; all places are with Him, for He is the place of the world, and the world is not His place.
Even though we find places where the Shechinah rested, such as the Beis HaMikdash, it does not mean, Heaven forbid, that His Divine Presence was contained there, as Shlomo said: 'the heavens and the heavens of heavens cannot contain You, how much less this house.'
Only, because there were beautiful things there, for in the Beis HaMikdash was the image of the work of creation and the image of Gan Eden, His holiness was drawn there. But the world is not His place; He is the place of the world.
Therefore He can make Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgement, for He fulfils 'do not judge your friend until you reach his place', since He is the place of the world.
This is: 'holiness befits Your house; Hashem, for length of days.' Hashem drew only His holiness into the Beis HaMikdash, because there were beautiful things there; but He Himself is not contained by the world, He is the place of the world. So 'Hashem, for length of days': He can make Rosh Hashanah, which is one long day.
And one who holds on to the Throne of Glory, the roots of the souls, also becomes a 'place of the world', as in 'He gives them a Throne of Glory, for the pillars of the earth are Hashem's, and on them He set the world.' Through the Throne of Glory, the roots of the souls, he becomes a place of the world, and so he too can make Rosh Hashanah.
Our explanation. Here the threads join. A person who holds on to the Throne, bound to the roots of all the souls, becomes a kind of place for the world. Only one like that can truly stand in judgement, because he holds the place of every Jew. For the rest of us, the lesson is simple: be very slow to judge.
— Part 8: The Verse Decoded: Tik'u Vachodesh Shofar —
Part eight: the verse decoded. Tik'u vachodesh shofar.
This is the meaning of 'Tik'u vachodesh shofar.' Tik'u, sound: this is the dominion we described, as in 'I will fasten him, utka'tiv, as a peg in a firm place.'
Vachodesh, at the new moon: this is the renewal of the mind on the three festivals, as in 'He made the moon for the appointed times': all the festivals come through the renewal of the moon.
Shofar is the heart, which is nourished by the finest of the fine, shufra d'shufra. Shofar is also awe: 'can a shofar be sounded in the city and the people not tremble?' Shofar is also prophecy: 'raise your voice like a shofar.' And shofar is prayer: 'from the narrow place I called to Hashem', the narrow end and the wide end of the shofar.
It is also the plants of the field, which return their power into prayer, as in 'Yitzchak went out to meditate in the field.' And this is the shofar: 'bimshoch b'keren hayovel', when the ram's horn sounds long, an acronym of 'vayeitzei Yitzchak lasu'ach basadeh.'
And through all of these: 'bakeseh l'yom chageinu', at the appointed time of our festival day, which is Rosh Hashanah. For through all this, one can make Rosh Hashanah.
Our summary of the verse. Tik'u, sound: dominion over the angels, fastened like a peg in a firm place. Vachodesh, at the new moon: the renewal of the mind on each festival. Shofar: the heart, awe, prophecy, prayer, and even the plants of the field. And bakeseh, l'yom chageinu: the Throne, and the power to make a true Rosh Hashanah.
Torah one ends with a short note. About the prophecy described above there is a difficulty: the angel who bestows prophecy, 'the angel who redeems', is below the level from which prophecy comes. But there are inner matters in this: when it rises above them, then precisely it bestows prophecy; and we will not deal with this now.
Let us review the whole path. Bind yourself to all the souls of Israel, through the true leaders of the generation. Rebuild the heart, so awe replaces the three desires, helped by the three festivals. Awe creates an angel that brings prophecy, and prophecy redeems prayer from exile. Prayer is the word of Hashem: it heals, even before illness appears, and it holds the root of every power. And only one who holds the place of every soul can truly judge, which is why Hashem judges us with mercy on Rosh Hashanah, on Rosh Chodesh.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Feel part of all of Klal Yisrael, not alone. Say one prayer today slowly, as if it really matters, because it does. And before judging someone, remember that you cannot stand in their place.

EN (our paraphrase): A Jew was created to have dominion over the angels.
Scene 7 · LM II:1 §1 · paragraph §1.3
EN (our paraphrase): Each person must see that he reaches this goal, dominion over angels. But he must guard himself greatly and have the strength to stand in it, so that the ministering angels do not envy him and cast him down, Heaven forbid. For the angels are very jealous of one who rules over them, as our Sages said of several great people, whom the angels wanted to push away.
Scene 8 · LM II:1 §2 · paragraph §2.1
EN (our paraphrase): The advice for this is to bind oneself to the souls of Israel; through that bond one is saved from them. This is 'he holds on to the face of the Throne': one must hold on to the roots of the souls, which are hewn from beneath the Throne of Glory, which is 'the mother of all life.'
Scene 9 · Shabbos 88b, as quoted in LM II:1 §2 · paragraph §2.2
וְזֶה בְּחִינַת מַה שֶּׁאָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה: בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁעָלָה מֹשֶׁה לַמָּרוֹם, אָמְרוּ מַלְאֲכֵי הַשָּׁרֵת: מַה לִּיְלוּד אִשָּׁה בֵּינֵינוּ, אָמַר לָהֶם: לְקַבֵּל תּוֹרָה בָּא. אָמְרוּ: אֲשֶׁר תְּנָה הוֹדְךָ עַל הַשָּׁמָיִם וְכוּ'. אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא לְמֹשֶׁה: הַחֲזֵר לָהֶם תְּשׁוּבָה. אָמַר: אֲנִי מִתְיָרֵא, שֶׁלֹּא יִשְׂרְפוּנִי בְהֶבֶל פִּיהֶם. אָמַר לוֹ: אֱחֹז בְּכִסֵּא כְבוֹדִי וְכוּ';
EN (our paraphrase): When Moshe went up on high, the ministering angels said: what is one born of woman doing among us? He said: he came to receive the Torah. They said: 'You who set Your glory upon the heavens.' The Holy One said to Moshe: answer them. He said: I am afraid they will burn me with the breath of their mouths. He said to him: hold on to My Throne of Glory.
Scene 10 · LM II:1 §2 · paragraph §2.2
EN (our paraphrase): That is, Hashem gave him advice to hold on and bind himself to the roots of the souls, which are the Throne of Glory, the mother of all life; through that he would be saved from the angels' envy.
Scene 12 · LM II:1 §2 · paragraph §2.3
EN (our paraphrase): This is 'Hashem Elokim built the rib that He took from the man.' The word vayiven, 'He built', is an acronym of 've'sakativ yased b'makom ne'eman', 'I will fasten him as a peg in a firm place', which speaks of dominion, as Targum Yonasan renders it: a faithful steward serving in a lasting place. That is the dominion we described, that it should endure.
Scene 13 · LM II:1 §2 · paragraph §2.4
EN (our paraphrase): This is the rib, which is Chava, 'the mother of all life', the Throne of Glory, the roots of the souls; through it there is strength to stand in this dominion.
Scene 14 · LM II:1 §2 · paragraph §2.5
EN (our paraphrase): 'That He took from the man': the supernal Man, as it is written, 'and upon the Throne, a likeness like the appearance of a man.' 'And He brought her to the man': to the man below, who through this gains the strength to stand in this dominion.
Scene 15 · Kiddushin 81a, as quoted in LM II:1 §2 · paragraph §2.6
EN (our paraphrase): This is what Rav Amram Chasida said to the angel: 'I am flesh and you are fire, and I am greater than you.' Basra, flesh, is an acronym of 'shishim ribo b'keres echad', six hundred thousand in one womb, the roots of the souls. Through them he has the strength to rule over the angels: 'I am greater than you.'
Part 2 — Yerushalayim of the Heart
Scene 2 · LM II:1 §3 · paragraph §3.1
EN (our paraphrase): To bind oneself to the roots of the souls of Israel, one must know the source of all the souls and the source of their life: from where each and every soul receives its vitality.
Scene 3 · LM II:1 §3 · paragraph §3.2
EN (our paraphrase): The main thing is to know all the renowned leaders of the generation. If one cannot know and bind oneself to each soul individually, one must bind oneself to all the renowned leaders of the generation, for the souls are divided beneath them. Each leader has many individual souls belonging to his portion, so when one binds oneself to the leaders, one is bound to every individual soul of Israel.
Scene 4 · LM II:1 §3 · paragraph §3.3
EN (our paraphrase): But one must know and recognize the leaders, for some are renowned falsely, only through brazenness, as our Sages said: brazenness is a kingship without a crown.
Scene 6 · LM II:1 §4 · paragraph §4.1
EN (our paraphrase): To recognize which leaders stand only through brazenness comes through building Yerushalayim, which is the heart. For Yerushalayim is complete awe, the wholeness of the fear of Heaven that depends on the heart, as our Sages said: of a matter given over to the heart, it says 'and you shall fear.'
Scene 7 · LM II:1 §4 · paragraph §4.2
EN (our paraphrase): But there are three traits that destroy Yerushalayim, that is, the heart: they ruin the awe that depends on the heart. The three are the desire for money, the desire for food, and bodily desire. These three are in the heart, and so they ruin the awe in the heart.
Scene 8 · LM II:1 §4 · paragraph §4.3
מָמוֹן שָׁרְשׁוֹ בַּלֵּב, בִּבְחִינַת: בִּרְכַּת ה' הִיא תַעֲשִׁיר, וְלֹא יוֹסִף עֶצֶב עִמָּהּ; בְּחִינַת: וַיִּתְעַצֵּב אֶל לִבּוֹ;
EN (our paraphrase): Money is rooted in the heart, as in 'the blessing of Hashem makes rich, and adds no sadness with it', and 'He was saddened in His heart.'
Scene 9 · LM II:1 §4 · paragraph §4.4, §4.5, §4.6
EN (our paraphrase): Food: 'bread sustains the heart of man.' And bodily desire is also in the heart, since it comes mainly from heat, from the blood in the chamber of the heart. And because they are in the heart, they ruin the awe in the heart, which is Yerushalayim.
Scene 11 · Berachos 3a, as quoted in LM II:1 §4 · paragraph §4.7, §4.8
EN (our paraphrase): This is the meaning of: the night has three watches. Night is darkness, that is, obstacles, and the three watches are these three traits.
Scene 12 · LM II:1 §4 · paragraph §4.9, §4.10
EN (our paraphrase): The first watch: the donkey brays. That is the desire for money, as in 'Yissachar is a strong-boned donkey', which the Targum renders: rich in possessions. The second: dogs bark. That is the desire for food, as it is written: 'the dogs are greedy, they never know satiety.'
Scene 13 · LM II:1 §4 · paragraph §4.11
EN (our paraphrase): The third: a baby nurses from its mother, and a wife converses with her husband. That is bodily desire.
Scene 15 · LM II:1 §4 · paragraph §4.13
EN (our paraphrase): This is what our Sages said: David was not fit for that deed, as it says, 'my heart is hollow within me.' The words 'libi chalal b'kirbi' form the acronym chalav, milk.
Scene 16 · LM II:1 §4 · paragraph §4.14
EN (our paraphrase): This is what our Sages said: on each and every watch the Holy One sits and roars like a lion. That is over the loss of awe, as in 'a lion has roared, who will not fear?' For these three traits, the three watches, ruin the building of Yerushalayim, the wholeness of awe that depends on the heart.
Part 3 — The Festivals and the Angel of Prophecy
Scene 2 · LM II:1 §5 · paragraph §5.1
EN (our paraphrase): These three traits are repaired through da'as, knowledge. One must draw da'as into the heart, as in 'know this day and take it to your heart.' Through that, the three traits are repaired.
Scene 3 · LM II:1 §5 · paragraph §5.2
EN (our paraphrase): For da'as is the three brains, the three hollows of the skull, and these correspond to the three pilgrim festivals.
Scene 4 · LM II:1 §5 · paragraph §5.3
EN (our paraphrase): Each festival is a renewal of the mind: a new understanding is drawn down to repair these traits, one trait on each festival. Therefore one must be very careful about honouring Yom Tov, and receive the three festivals properly, for through the mitzvah of the three festivals we merit to repair these three traits.
Scene 5 · LM II:1 §5 · paragraph §5.4
EN (our paraphrase): On Pesach the desire for money is repaired, as it is written: 'Hashem gave the people favour in the eyes of Egypt, and they lent to them', against their will, because the people did not want it at all. For then the desire for money was repaired.
Scene 6 · LM II:1 §5 · paragraph §5.5, §5.6
EN (our paraphrase): On Shavuos bodily desire is repaired. On Sukkos the desire for food is repaired, for Sukkos is called the Festival of Ingathering, when all kinds of food are gathered in. One who has bread in his basket is not like one who has none.
Scene 8 · LM II:1 §5 · paragraph §5.7
EN (our paraphrase): This is 'called to the appointed time, men of name.' 'Men of name' are these three traits, each of which is called a 'name'.
Scene 9 · LM II:1 §5 · paragraph §5.8, §5.9, §5.10
EN (our paraphrase): Money, as it is written: 'In every place where I cause My Name to be mentioned, I will come to you and bless you.' Food, as it is written: 'and be famed in Beis Lechem,' the house of bread. Bodily desire: 'unless the king desired her, and she was called by name.'
Scene 10 · LM II:1 §5 · paragraph §5.11, §5.12
EN (our paraphrase): And the awe in the heart is also called a name, as in 'to fear the glorious Name.' So 'called to the appointed time, men of name': we must call the festivals, the three pilgrim festivals, to repair these three traits.
Scene 11 · LM II:1 §6 · paragraph §6.1
EN (our paraphrase): Through building Yerushalayim, the repair of complete awe in the heart, an angel is created that bestows prophecy on the vessels of prophecy. Prophecy comes from the cherubim, as in 'he heard the voice from between the two cherubim.' The cherubim are small faces, and they receive from the angel, as in 'the angel who redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads.'
Scene 12 · LM II:1 §6 · paragraph §6.2
EN (our paraphrase): This angel is rooted in awe, for the letters of malach, angel, are an acronym of 'ki ein machsor lirei'av', 'for those who fear Him lack nothing.' Then prophecy flows, and even the young can prophesy, as in 'your sons and daughters will prophesy.'
Scene 14 · LM II:1 §7 · paragraph §7.1
EN (our paraphrase): But one must be very careful about taking a position of authority. Whoever attains awe longs to be appointed, for one who has fear of Heaven, his words are heard; and because his words are heard, he longs for an appointment. But he must guard himself greatly from it, for appointment ruins the flow of prophecy, the angel created through awe.
Scene 15 · LM II:1 §7 · paragraph §7.2
EN (our paraphrase): This is what Yehoshua said to Moshe when he was told 'Eldad and Meidad are prophesying in the camp': 'My master Moshe, destroy them.' Rashi explains: place the needs of the community on them, and they will come to an end. For communal needs, that is, an appointment, end and ruin prophecy, since kela'eim, 'destroy them', is made of the letters of malach.
Part 4 — Prayer Redeemed, and Healing Through the Word of Hashem
Scene 2 · LM II:1 §8 · paragraph §8.1
EN (our paraphrase): Through the flow of prophecy, even when no one actually prophesies, but there is an aspect of prophecy flowing in the world, prayer is redeemed and set free.
Scene 3 · LM II:1 §8, quoting Berachos 6b · paragraph §8.2
כִּי הַתְּפִלָּה הִיא גָבוֹהַ מְאֹד, וּבְנֵי אָדָם מְזַלְזְלִין בָּהּ. וּכְשֶׁעוֹמְדִים לְהִתְפַּלֵּל, חֲפֵצִים לִפְטֹר הַתְּפִלָּה מֵעֲלֵיהֶם, כְּמַאֲמַר רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה: כְּרֻם זֻלֻּת לִבְנֵי אָדָם – אֵלּוּ דְּבָרִים הָעוֹמְדִין בְּרוּמוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם, וּבְנֵי אָדָם מְזַלְזְלִין בָּהֶם וְכוּ';
EN (our paraphrase): For prayer is very lofty, yet people treat it lightly. When they stand to pray, they want to be rid of it, as our Sages said: 'when worthlessness is exalted among men', these are the things that stand at the heights of the world, and people treat them lightly.
Scene 4 · LM II:1 §8 · paragraph §8.3
EN (our paraphrase): Through prophecy, prayer is redeemed from exile, as in 'for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you.' Through prophecy, prayer becomes whole, for prayer is 'He creates the speech of the lips', an aspect of prophecy.
Scene 6 · LM II:1 §9 · paragraph §9.1
EN (our paraphrase): When prayer is redeemed and set free, then all the doctors fall away, because there is no need for remedies. All remedies come through herbs, and each herb receives power from the star and constellation assigned to it, as our Sages said: there is no blade of grass that has no constellation that strikes it and says to it: grow!
Scene 7 · LM II:1 §9 · paragraph §9.2
EN (our paraphrase): Each star receives power from the stars above it, and the higher one from the one higher still, until they receive power from the upper ministers.
Scene 8 · LM II:1 §9 · paragraph §9.2
EN (our paraphrase): As they said: all the stars borrow from one another; the moon borrows from the sun. They all borrow, one from the next, up to the upper ministers, and those from the ones above them, until all receive from the root of everything, the word of Hashem: 'By the word of Hashem the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their hosts.'
Scene 9 · LM II:1 §9 · paragraph §9.2
EN (our paraphrase): Therefore, when one merits prayer, there is no need for healing by herbs, for prayer is the word of Hashem, the root of everything.
Scene 11 · LM II:1 §9 · paragraph §9.3
EN (our paraphrase): This is navi, prophet, an acronym of 'bidvar Hashem shamayim na'asu', by the word of Hashem the heavens were made; the aleph is the firmament that divides between the waters. For through prophecy one merits prayer, which is the word of Hashem.
Scene 12 · LM II:1 §9 · paragraph §9.4, §9.5, §9.6
EN (our paraphrase): This is: 'He sends His word and heals them, and rescues them from their pits.' 'He sends His word and heals them': all healing is received only through the word of Hashem, that is, prayer. Then 'He rescues them from their pits', from the herbs, as in 'the reaper of the field', since there is no need for healing by herbs.
Scene 13 · LM II:1 §9, quoting Shemos 23:25 · paragraph §9.7
EN (our paraphrase): This is: 'You shall serve Hashem your Elokim, and He will bless your bread and your water, and I will remove illness from your midst.' Service here is prayer. Then He will bless your bread and water: you will be healed through bread and water, because they are blessed from the root of everything, the word of Hashem, prayer; and bread and water will have the power to heal like herbs.
Scene 14 · LM II:1 §9 · paragraph §9.8
EN (our paraphrase): For the dividing of powers, that this herb heals one illness and that herb another, exists only below. Above, in the root of everything, the word of Hashem, all is one; there is no difference between bread and water and herbs. When one holds the root, the word of Hashem, prayer, one can draw the power of healing into bread and water.
Part 5 — Three Servitudes, and Hidden Illness
Scene 2 · LM II:1 §10 · paragraph §10.1
EN (our paraphrase): But there are three kinds of service that ruin the service of prayer. They are three traits: first, 'do not despise any person', not to belittle anyone; second, idolatry, and even a flaw in faith, faith that is not whole, is also a form of idolatry; third, guarding the covenant, one who does not guard the covenant properly.
Scene 3 · LM II:1 §10 · paragraph §10.2, §10.3
EN (our paraphrase): These three traits are all services of the other side, and they ruin the service of prayer. Belittling people is a form of servitude, as we find with Yosef's brothers: because they belittled him and did not believe he would be king, they fell into servitude and said to him, 'here we are, your servants.'
Scene 4 · LM II:1 §10 · paragraph §10.4
EN (our paraphrase): Idolatry: as it is written, 'I am Hashem your Elokim who took you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.' The land of Egypt was full of idols, and so it is called the house of slaves.
Scene 5 · LM II:1 §10 · paragraph §10.5
EN (our paraphrase): Guarding the covenant: one who blemishes it is also in a kind of servitude, like Cham, of whom it was said, 'Cursed is Canaan, a slave of slaves he shall be.' One must go out of these three servitudes, these three traits; then one merits the service of prayer, and can be healed by anything in the world, even bread and water.
Scene 6 · LM II:1 §10, on Pesachim 25a · paragraph §10.6
EN (our paraphrase): This is the meaning of: one may be healed with anything, except idolatry, forbidden relations and bloodshed; that is, these three traits. When one goes out of these three, then 'one is healed by anything', even bread and water.
Scene 8 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.1
EN (our paraphrase): Know that illnesses differ. Some illness is like a plant: like a seed sown in the ground that rots, and from it comes moisture and fibres, one on another, until a root forms; from it come branches, and from those branches more branches, until the fruit grows. So too there is illness that grows in a person for many years.
Scene 9 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.2
EN (our paraphrase): And there is illness that a person has from birth, from his father and mother, and it is revealed only in old age. While the illness sprouts and grows, it is hidden from every living eye; no one knows of it, except that certain small pains arise then, signs of the illness.
Scene 10 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.3, §11.4
EN (our paraphrase): So too with healing by herbs there are differences. Some illness can be healed with one herb; a greater illness needs a compound of several herbs; some need remedies from far away; and some illness no remedy helps, because the power of the illness is greater than the power of the herbs.
Scene 11 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.5
EN (our paraphrase): At the very beginning of an illness's growth, before it sprouted and was revealed, it could have been healed easily. Only, at that time it was hidden from every eye, and no one knew of it but Hashem alone.
Scene 12 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.6
EN (our paraphrase): But when one holds on to the word of Hashem, prayer, receiving healing from everything in the world, even bread and water, then one can be healed even while the illness is still sprouting, hidden from human eyes. There is no need for remedies at all; the healing comes through bread and water. So even before the illness is revealed, one can be healed through the bread and water one eats.
Scene 13 · LM II:1 §11, on Shemos 15:26 · paragraph §11.7
EN (our paraphrase): This is: 'All the illness that I placed upon Egypt I will not place upon you, for I am Hashem your Healer.' All the commentators asked: if He will not place it, why is healing needed? But according to what we said, it is well understood.
Scene 14 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.7
EN (our paraphrase): 'I will not place upon you' means He will not let you come to illness at all, because He heals you beforehand, at the time the illness sprouts.
Scene 15 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.7
EN (our paraphrase): 'For I am Hashem your Healer': I, Hashem, precisely. At the time the illness sprouts, when no one knows of it but I, Hashem, then I will heal you through the word of Hashem, prayer, and you will not come to illness at all.
Scene 17 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.8, §11.9
EN (our paraphrase): All this depends on repairing prayer, and prayer is repaired by leaving the three servitudes. This is: 'If you will diligently listen, and do what is upright in His eyes, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes.' These are the repair of the three servitudes.
Scene 18 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.10, §11.11
EN (our paraphrase): 'Do what is upright in His eyes' is the opposite of belittling people. 'Give ear to His commandments' is the repair of the covenant, as in 'Avraham circumcised Yitzchak his son at eight days, as Elokim had commanded him.'
Scene 19 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.12, §11.13
EN (our paraphrase): 'And keep all His statutes' is the repair of faith, the opposite of idolatry, of which it is said: 'the statutes of the nations are vanity.' And then: 'all the illness... for I am Hashem your Healer', because prayer is whole, and one can be healed through the word of Hashem by everything in the world, even before the illness is revealed.
Part 6 — The Plants of the Field, Mashiach, and the Great Lender
Scene 2 · LM II:1 §11, on Berachos 10b · paragraph §11.14, §11.15
EN (our paraphrase): This is what Chizkiyahu said: 'I have done what is good in Your eyes.' Our Sages said: he joined redemption to prayer, and he hid away the book of remedies. And it is all one: by joining redemption to prayer, he redeemed prayer from exile, and so he hid away the book of remedies.
Scene 3 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.15
EN (our paraphrase): For when prayer is redeemed, all remedies fall away, since one is healed through the word of Hashem. Then all the doctors are embarrassed by their remedies, for no remedy has power then: all the herbs return their power into prayer, the word of Hashem, their supernal root.
Scene 4 · LM II:1 §11 · paragraph §11.16
EN (our paraphrase): For this is the duty of all the herbs and all the plants of the field: when a person stands to pray, he is then the word of Hashem, their supernal root, and they return their power into the prayer. And when a person prays about a certain illness, the herbs that have the power to heal that illness are obliged to return their power into the prayer, which is their root.
Scene 5 · LM II:1 §11, on Bereishis 24:63 · paragraph §11.17
EN (our paraphrase): This is: 'Yitzchak went out to meditate, lasu'ach, in the field.' His prayer was with the plants of the field, siach hasadeh: all the plants of the field returned their power and gave it into his prayer, which is their root.
Scene 7 · LM II:1 §12 · paragraph §12.1
EN (our paraphrase): This is the glimmer of Mashiach. For all things differ from one another in appearance, taste and smell. That is why what makes all plants grow is called matar, rain: an acronym of mar'eh, ta'am, rei'ach, appearance, taste, smell.
Scene 8 · LM II:1 §12 · paragraph §12.2
EN (our paraphrase): The main one is smell, for the soul enjoys only smell, as our Sages said: what is it that the soul enjoys and not the body? Smell. And prayer comes mainly from the soul, as in 'let every soul praise Hashem.'
Scene 9 · LM II:1 §12 · paragraph §12.3
EN (our paraphrase): And Mashiach receives all the prayers, for Mashiach is the nose, as in 'the breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Hashem.' He receives all the fragrances, which are the prayers, since prayer, coming from the soul, draws from smell. This is 'and with My praise I will restrain, echetom, for you', from chotem, the nose.
Scene 10 · LM II:1 §12 · paragraph §12.4
EN (our paraphrase): That is why he is called Mashiach: he draws and receives from siach hasadeh, the plants of the field, all the fragrances that come into prayer. And Mashiach receives them: 'the breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Hashem.'
Scene 12 · LM II:1 §13, on Esther 2:15 and Megillah 13a · paragraph §13.1
EN (our paraphrase): This is finding grace, as in 'Esther found grace in the eyes of all who saw her': each one thought she was of his own people.
Scene 13 · LM II:1 §13 · paragraph §13.1
EN (our paraphrase): For this master of prayer is the word of Hashem, the supernal root from which all powers and all the host of heaven receive. Therefore every power on high feels he belongs to it: he finds grace in their eyes, and each one feels he is dealing with it alone, because all of them receive from him.
Scene 14 · LM II:1 §13 · paragraph §13.2
EN (our paraphrase): Then he can recognize the leaders who stand through brazenness, for their brazenness falls before him. When he merits prayer, the word of Hashem, the supernal root from which all the upper ministers and the host of heaven receive their power, they are all borrowers from him, as in 'all the stars borrow from one another.'
Scene 15 · LM II:1 §13 · paragraph §13.2
EN (our paraphrase): So all are borrowers, up to the supernal root, the word of Hashem, the master of prayer: he is the great lender, from whom all the host of heaven and all the powers borrow. As in 'and the host of heaven bow to You': they bow and submit to their root, the word of Hashem, the master of prayer.
Scene 16 · LM II:1 §13 · paragraph §13.3
EN (our paraphrase): The words 'utzva hashamayim lecha mishtachavim', and the host of heaven bow to You, form the acronym malveh, lender. All borrow one from another, up to the great lender, the master of prayer, who is the supernal root, the word of Hashem.
Scene 17 · LM II:1 §13 · paragraph §13.4
EN (our paraphrase): Therefore he can recognize the leaders who stand only through brazenness, because no one is brazen before his creditor. Their brazenness falls before the master of prayer, the great lender, since they all borrow from him.
Scene 19 · LM II:1 §13, on Shemos 33:12 · paragraph §13.5
EN (our paraphrase): This is 'for you have found grace in My eyes, and I know you by name.' Through finding grace, when all receive and borrow from him, and each one feels he is its own, he comes to 'I know you by name': he can know and recognize all the renowned leaders, the men of name; for whoever is renowned through brazenness falls before him.
Scene 20 · LM II:1 §13 · paragraph §13.6
EN (our paraphrase): 'I know you by name' also refers to the souls, as in 'whatever the living soul is, that is its name.' For through the leaders he binds himself to all the souls; and this is 'he holds on to the face of the Throne', binding oneself to the roots of the souls, the Throne of Glory.
Part 7 — Rosh Hashanah: Who May Judge
Scene 2 · LM II:1 §14 · paragraph §14.1
EN (our paraphrase): Then one can make Rosh Hashanah. For when a person sits and speaks about his friend, that is Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgement: he sits and judges his friend.
Scene 3 · LM II:1 §14, quoting Avos 2:4 · paragraph §14.1
וְצָרִיךְ לִזָּהֵר מִזֶּה מְאֹד, וּלְהִסְתַּכֵּל עַל עַצְמוֹ הֵיטֵב אִם הוּא רָאוּי לָזֶה לִשְׁפֹּט אֶת חֲבֵרוֹ, כִּי הַמִּשְׁפָּט לֵאלֹקִים הוּא, כִּי רַק הוּא יִתְבָּרַךְ לְבַדּוֹ רָאוּי לִשְׁפֹּט אֶת הָאָדָם, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה: אַל תָּדִין אֶת חֲבֵרְךָ עַד שֶׁתַּגִּיעַ לִמְקוֹמוֹ;
EN (our paraphrase): One must be very careful about this, and look at oneself well: is one fit to judge one's friend? For judgement belongs to Hashem; only He alone is fit to judge a person, as our Sages said: do not judge your friend until you reach his place.
Scene 4 · LM II:1 §14 · paragraph §14.2
EN (our paraphrase): And who can know and reach his friend's place, except Hashem, who is the place of the world, while the world is not His place? Each and every person has a place with Him. Therefore only He can judge a person, for He is the Master of mercy, and He surely fulfils for us: judge every person favourably.
Scene 6 · LM II:1 §14 · paragraph §14.3
EN (our paraphrase): And we see His mercy in that He set Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgement, on Rosh Chodesh. This is a great kindness, for how could we lift our faces to ask Him for atonement?
Scene 7 · LM II:1 §14, on Shevuos 9a · paragraph §14.3
EN (our paraphrase): So He did us a kindness and set the day of judgement, Rosh Hashanah, on Rosh Chodesh, when, as it were, He Himself asks for atonement: 'bring atonement for Me', which is said of Rosh Chodesh. Therefore we are not ashamed on the day of judgement to ask for atonement, since He Himself, as it were, asks then for atonement.
Scene 8 · LM II:1 §14 · paragraph §14.4
EN (our paraphrase): Also, since Hashem Himself, as it were, came to say 'bring atonement for Me', having done something He needed to regret, we are not ashamed to come before Him with our sins, to ask atonement and regret them. So we see the greatness of His mercy.
Scene 10 · LM II:1 §14 · paragraph §14.5
EN (our paraphrase): Therefore He alone is fit to judge the world, for He knows the place of each one; all places are with Him, for He is the place of the world, and the world is not His place.
Scene 11 · LM II:1 §14 · paragraph §14.6
כִּי אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאָנוּ מוֹצְאִים מְקוֹמוֹת שֶׁהָיָה בָּהֶם הַשְׁרָאַת הַשְּׁכִינָה, כְּגוֹן בְּבֵית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ, אֵין הַכַּוָּנָה, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, שֶׁנִּתְצַמְצֵם שָׁם אֱלֹקוּתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר שְׁלֹמֹה: הִנֵּה הַשָּׁמַיִם וּשְׁמֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם לֹא יְכַלְכְּלוּךָ, אַף כִּי הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה וְכוּ';
EN (our paraphrase): Even though we find places where the Shechinah rested, such as the Beis HaMikdash, it does not mean, Heaven forbid, that His Divine Presence was contained there, as Shlomo said: 'the heavens and the heavens of heavens cannot contain You, how much less this house.'
Scene 12 · LM II:1 §14 · paragraph §14.6
EN (our paraphrase): Only, because there were beautiful things there, for in the Beis HaMikdash was the image of the work of creation and the image of Gan Eden, His holiness was drawn there. But the world is not His place; He is the place of the world.
Scene 13 · LM II:1 §14 · paragraph §14.7
EN (our paraphrase): Therefore He can make Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgement, for He fulfils 'do not judge your friend until you reach his place', since He is the place of the world.
Scene 14 · LM II:1 §14, on Tehillim 93:5 · paragraph §14.8
EN (our paraphrase): This is: 'holiness befits Your house; Hashem, for length of days.' Hashem drew only His holiness into the Beis HaMikdash, because there were beautiful things there; but He Himself is not contained by the world, He is the place of the world. So 'Hashem, for length of days': He can make Rosh Hashanah, which is one long day.
Scene 15 · LM II:1 §14 · paragraph §14.9
EN (our paraphrase): And one who holds on to the Throne of Glory, the roots of the souls, also becomes a 'place of the world', as in 'He gives them a Throne of Glory, for the pillars of the earth are Hashem's, and on them He set the world.' Through the Throne of Glory, the roots of the souls, he becomes a place of the world, and so he too can make Rosh Hashanah.
Part 8 — The Verse Decoded: Tik'u Vachodesh Shofar
Scene 2 · LM II:1 §15 · paragraph §15.1, §15.2
EN (our paraphrase): This is the meaning of 'Tik'u vachodesh shofar.' Tik'u, sound: this is the dominion we described, as in 'I will fasten him, utka'tiv, as a peg in a firm place.'
Scene 3 · LM II:1 §15 · paragraph §15.3
EN (our paraphrase): Vachodesh, at the new moon: this is the renewal of the mind on the three festivals, as in 'He made the moon for the appointed times': all the festivals come through the renewal of the moon.
Scene 4 · LM II:1 §15 · paragraph §15.4
EN (our paraphrase): Shofar is the heart, which is nourished by the finest of the fine, shufra d'shufra. Shofar is also awe: 'can a shofar be sounded in the city and the people not tremble?' Shofar is also prophecy: 'raise your voice like a shofar.' And shofar is prayer: 'from the narrow place I called to Hashem', the narrow end and the wide end of the shofar.
Scene 5 · LM II:1 §15 · paragraph §15.5
EN (our paraphrase): It is also the plants of the field, which return their power into prayer, as in 'Yitzchak went out to meditate in the field.' And this is the shofar: 'bimshoch b'keren hayovel', when the ram's horn sounds long, an acronym of 'vayeitzei Yitzchak lasu'ach basadeh.'
Scene 6 · LM II:1 §15 · paragraph §15.6
EN (our paraphrase): And through all of these: 'bakeseh l'yom chageinu', at the appointed time of our festival day, which is Rosh Hashanah. For through all this, one can make Rosh Hashanah.
Scene 8 · LM II:1 §16 · paragraph §16.1
EN (our paraphrase): About the prophecy described above there is a difficulty: the angel who bestows prophecy, 'the angel who redeems', is below the level from which prophecy comes. But there are inner matters in this: when it rises above them, then precisely it bestows prophecy; and we will not deal with this now.
