The Resting Place of the Baal Shem Tov

Rebbe Nachman told Reb Noson that it is very good to be at the grave of the Baal Shem Tov. 1-minute recap

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah one hundred and nine: the resting place of the Baal Shem Tov.

Rebbe Nachman told Reb Noson that it is very good to be at the grave of the Baal Shem Tov.

The righteous shall inherit the land: the resting place of a true tzaddik is holy with the very holiness of the Land of Israel.

And the Land of Israel is a great repair for failings in holiness of the covenant.

Our own reflection: the holiness of the Land reaches wherever a true tzaddik rests.

Explainer

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah one hundred and nine. Why the resting place of a true tzaddik is so precious.

Reb Noson writes that the Rebbe spoke with him about the grave of the Baal Shem Tov, of righteous and holy memory, and said it is very good to be there, at his grave.

He explained with the verse: the righteous shall inherit the land. True tzaddikim inherit the Land of Israel: they merit that the place where they are laid to rest is holy with the actual holiness of the Land of Israel.

And the Land of Israel is a great repair for the blemish of the covenant, that is, for failings in personal holiness. So being at such a tzaddik's resting place brings that same repair.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Wherever a true tzaddik rests, a piece of the Land of Israel is found, and with it a path back to holiness.

— Part 1: The Resting Place of the Baal Shem Tov —

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah one hundred and nine. A very short shiur: the resting place of a true tzaddik.

Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah one hundred and nine. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.

Reb Noson writes: He spoke with me about the grave of the Baal Shem Tov, may the memory of the righteous and holy be a blessing, and said that it is very good to be there at his grave.

And he said: 'the righteous shall inherit the land'. That is, true tzaddikim inherit the Land of Israel: they merit that the place where they are laid to rest is holy with the very holiness of the Land of Israel,

and the Land of Israel is a great repair for the blemish of the covenant.

Our explanation. The verse says the righteous shall inherit the land. Rebbe Nachman reads it simply: a true tzaddik's resting place, even far from Israel, becomes holy with the Land's own holiness. And since the Land of Israel repairs failings in personal holiness, being at such a place brings that repair close.

Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. Holiness can reach far from the Land; a true tzaddik carries it with him. And there is always a path back to holiness.
