Following Your Own Cleverness
Following one's own cleverness leads to great mistakes; the essence of Judaism is simplicity, looking in everything only for Hashem's honour. Everything was created for Hashem's glory, and even the lowest places live from the hidden utterance, Bereishis. So when a person falls into doubts and cries out 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?', that very search is his teshuvah and lifts him up, like the olah offering.

1-minute recap
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twelve. Ayeh: where is the place of His glory?
Following your own cleverness can lead to great mistakes. The heart of Judaism is simplicity: in all you do, look only for Hashem's honour.
Everything was created for Hashem's glory, and even the lowest places live from it, through the hidden utterance, Bereishis.
So when a person falls into doubts and cries out, Ayeh, where is the place of His glory? that cry itself lifts him back up.
This is true teshuvah: to feel how far you are, to long for Hashem, and to keep asking: Ayeh?
Our own reflection: even from far away, the question 'where is Hashem?' is already the way back.

Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twelve: when a person follows his own cleverness. A Torah about simplicity, falling into doubt, and the cry Ayeh: where is Hashem's glory?
Rebbe Nachman opens with a warning. Following your own intellect can lead to great mistakes. The famous wicked people who misled the world did it all through their cleverness.
The heart of Judaism is simplicity: in everything you do, look that Hashem be there. Ask only: is His honour in this? If yes, do it; if not, don't. Then you will never stumble.
And even if a person falls into doubts, even about Hashem Himself, the fall is for the sake of rising. To show why, Rebbe Nachman goes back to the root of creation.
Everything was created for Hashem's glory. The world was made with ten utterances, and in each one His glory is clothed. The whole earth is full of His glory.
But His glory has a boundary: it does not spread into sin and impure places. Yet even they must live from Hashem. They draw life from the hidden utterance, Bereishis, concealed in total hiddenness. This, he says, cannot be understood, and one must not dwell on it.
So when a person falls to such places, looks at himself, and sees how far he is, he asks: Ayeh, where is the place of His glory? And that question is his repair.
Why? Because Ayeh is itself the highest glory, the hidden utterance that gives life even there. By asking Ayeh, he attaches himself to it, and rises. This is the olah, as Yitzchak asked: Ayeh, where is the lamb for the olah? It atones for the confused thoughts of the heart.
This is the essence of teshuvah: to search for Hashem's glory, to feel the distance, to long, and to ask: Ayeh?
The Sages even say: if someone asks you where your Elokim is, tell him: in the great city of Rome. Even there, among the idols, He is hidden.
The husks live only from hiddenness, where Hashem is not known at all. But whoever asks where He is, already knows that He is, only hidden. That gives him holy life in the very place of his fall, and in the end he rises to where Hashem's glory is revealed.
In a closing note, the Rebbe says this Torah is bound up with Torahs fifteen and sixteen, all hinted in a wondrous aggadah: Rabbi Zeira's strange questions to Rav Yehudah, about all the 'spaces' of the world. That hints at the vacated space, which lives from the hidden utterance.
Our own reflection: when you feel far from Hashem, keep asking where He is. The question itself is the way back.
Full shiur
— Part 1: Simplicity, and Glory in All Creation —
Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twelve: when a person follows his own cleverness. A shiur in three parts. Part one: simplicity, and the glory hidden in all of creation.
Gold is Rebbe Nachman's own words, from Likutey Moharan Tinyana, Torah twelve. Grey is a verse or teaching he quotes. Green is our own explanation. The Hebrew is the public-domain text from Sefaria; the English is our own paraphrase.
Rebbe Nachman opens with a warning. When a person follows his own intellect and cleverness, he can fall into many mistakes and stumbling blocks, and come to great harm, Heaven forbid. Some have done terrible damage, like the notorious, very wicked people who led the world astray; and all of it came through their cleverness and their intellect.
And the way of safety: The essence of Judaism is only to walk with innocence and simplicity, without any clever schemes, and in everything one does, to look that Hashem be there, paying no attention at all to one's own honour. If there is honour of Hashem in it, he should do it; and if not, not. Then he will surely never stumble.
Our explanation. Rebbe Nachman gives a person one simple question to ask before every step: is Hashem's honour in this? A heart that asks only that cannot be led astray by its own cleverness.
Then he goes further. And even when he falls, Heaven forbid, into doubts, and sometimes the fall is very, very great, Heaven save us, so that he falls into doubts and questioning thoughts about Hashem Himself, even so, the fall and the descent are for the sake of the ascent.
To explain this, he goes back to the beginning. For know: the root of all creation is honour, glory. Everything the Holy One created, He created only for His glory, as it says: 'All that is called by My name, for My glory I created it.' Since everything was created for His glory, His glory is the root of all creation.
Though it is all one, creation still has parts, and each part of creation has its own particular glory, which is its root. This is the teaching: with ten utterances the world was created. Could it not have been created with one? But for the sake of reward and punishment it was created with ten. And each utterance has its own glory, its root; for glory is the root of everything.
This is 'and in His sanctuary, all say: Glory!' In every utterance His glory is clothed, and through it the world was created; for 'the whole earth is full of His glory.'
Our explanation, step by step. Everything was made for Hashem's glory. Each of the ten utterances carries its own share of that glory, the root of its part of the world. So His glory fills the whole earth.
But there is an exception. But in sins and evil things, Heaven forbid, His glory is not there, as in 'My glory I will not give to another.' The glory has a limit, so that it does not spread there. Though the whole earth is full of His glory, when it reaches those places there is a boundary, and it does not go out there. And each glory, clothed in each of the ten utterances, has its limit, not to spread into the outside places.
And yet: But know, that even so, they too certainly receive life from Hashem. Even filthy places, or houses of idol worship, must also receive their vitality from Him.
But know, they receive it from the hidden utterance: 'Bereishis', In the beginning, is a hidden utterance. It includes all the utterances, and they all receive life from it. And the glory of the hidden utterance is hidden and concealed in the utmost concealment; from there they receive their life.
For from the revealed glory and the revealed utterances they cannot receive life, as in 'My glory I will not give to another.' Only from the hidden utterance, concealed in the utmost concealment, do they receive life. And this cannot be understood; it is forbidden to ponder it at all.
Our explanation. Of the ten utterances of creation, Bereishis, 'In the beginning', is the hidden one: it is not openly spoken, and it includes all the rest. The places where Hashem's glory cannot be revealed still live, from this utterly hidden source. And the Rebbe warns: this is not for us to probe.
— Part 2: Ayeh: Where Is the Place of His Glory? —
Part two: Ayeh, where is the place of His glory? How a person rises from the very place of his fall.
Now Rebbe Nachman returns to the person who has fallen. So when a person falls, Heaven forbid, into such places, the filthy places, and falls into doubts, questions and great confusion, he begins to look at himself and sees that he is very far from Hashem's glory. And he asks and searches: 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?', since he sees how far he is, having fallen to such places. And this itself is his repair and his rising, as in 'the descent is for the sake of the ascent', brought in the holy books.
Our explanation. These words come from the Kedushah: His ministering angels ask one another, Ayeh, where is the place of His glory? Rebbe Nachman now shows that this question is itself bound to the highest glory.
For 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory' is the supreme glory of the supreme utterance, the hidden utterance Bereishis, from which life flows to those places. So when he seeks and searches, 'Ayeh?', by that very act he returns and rises to the supreme glory called 'Ayeh', which, in its great hiddenness, gives life to those places. Having fallen there and asked 'Ayeh?', he binds himself to it again, gives life to his fall, and rises to the highest ascent.
He connects it to an offering. And this is the olah offering, which atones for thoughts of the heart, as the Sages taught on the verse 'and what rises up in your mind': the olah atones for such thoughts.
For there is 'my heart spins, secharchar.' There is a husk that twists the heart and turns it round and round, with crookedness, circles and much confusion; it is the husk of nogah. That is why it is called secharchar: in Aramaic translation, 'around' is sechor sechor, as in 'and a glow, nogah, around it.' For it is the level of translation, as brought elsewhere, and so the word is written in the language of translation.
And when a person falls there, to the level of the filthy places, and then seeks and cries out, 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?', this itself is his repair, for he returns to the supreme glory, which is 'Ayeh', as above.
And this is the olah, as in 'but ayeh, where is the lamb for the olah?' The level of 'Ayeh' is the lamb for the olah, to repair and atone for the thoughts of the heart that come from the filthy places; for through 'Ayeh' he is repaired and rises from there.
And this is what is brought at the end of the Tikkunim: 'Bereishis' is 'bara tayish', He created a goat; that is, the lamb for the olah, which comes through 'Ayeh', the hidden utterance, Bereishis.
Our explanation, step by step. A person falls into doubts and far places. There he asks: Ayeh, where is Hashem's glory? And that very question lifts him, like the olah, the offering that rises whole.
And this is teshuvah, for this is the essence of repentance: when a person seeks and searches for Hashem's glory, sees how far he is from it, and longs, and asks, and is pained: 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?' This itself is his teshuvah and his repair. Understand this well.
He adds a further point. There is much more in this. When a person travels on the road, or travels on paths of the spirit, the Torah goes before him, as in 'when you walk, it will lead you.' There are many levels in this, for each one according to his Torah.
And before every Torah come doubts like these. For example, with new insights in Torah: before one finds them, there are many doubts and confusions, until the matter is sifted and made clear. These doubts are the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the level of nogah; and when he reaches the Torah itself, that is the tree of life. This belongs above.
— Part 3: Even There He Is Hidden —
Part three: even in the great city of Rome, He is hidden. And the Rebbe's closing note.
In section two he brings a striking teaching of the Sages. This is: 'If a person asks you, where is your Elokim? tell him: in the great city of Rome.' For even there, a place full of idols and idol worship, even there He is hidden, as above.
The rule is: when he falls there, Heaven forbid, and begins to ask 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?', by this he gives himself life from the life of holiness. For the husks live only from the hiddenness, where Hashem is hidden in the utmost concealment, until nothing at all is known of Him.
But as soon as one asks 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?', it follows that he knows, at least, that Hashem exists, only He is hidden and concealed; that is why he asks where. And by this very thing he gives himself life in the place of his fall.
For 'Ayeh' is the hidden utterance, from which they receive life. Only, the husks live from the hiddenness, while he gives himself the life of holiness in the place of his fall, through his seeking and searching: 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?'
And afterwards he merits to rise from there completely, to holiness itself, the place where Hashem's glory is revealed; for the essence of holiness is that His glory be revealed. Blessed is Hashem forever, amen and amen.
Our explanation. The difference is small, but it is everything. The husks live where Hashem is not known at all. A person who asks where He is already knows that He is. That knowledge, even when hidden, is holiness, and it carries him upward.
Section three is a note in brackets, tying this Torah to others. This Torah, and the teaching that begins 'Those who boast', and everything that was said on the road, such as 'It was asked', are all one. All these teachings are bound together, and they are hinted and hidden in the words of the Sages, in a very wondrous aggadah: what Rabbi Zeira asked Rav Yehudah when he was in a cheerful mood, 'and if he had asked him about all the spaces of the world.'
He asked him several questions, lofty wonders, such as: why is the ox's tail long? why does the rooster lift its eyelid? All the questions there are great wonders, and all of the above is hinted and hidden there. What was brought earlier about joy and a cheerful mood also belongs here, hinted in that aggadah, which was said when he was in a cheerful mood.
Also what this teaching brings on 'but ayeh, where is the lamb for the olah' is hinted in that aggadah, which says: 'if he had asked him about all the spaces, chalalei, of the world.' This is the secret of the vacated space, the chalal hapanui, which is, as it were, empty of Hashem. But in truth it is surely impossible that Hashem not be there too, for then from where would it receive life? Rather, as above: it lives from the hidden utterance, Bereishis.
Also what is brought later about fear, 'yarei Shabbos', belongs here too: every fear has its utterance, and there is one utterance that includes them all. And what is brought later about Divine providence also belongs here, to that aggadah: why does the rooster lift its eyelid? And we did not merit to hear the explanation of all this.
Some reflections of our own, not a quotation. When you feel far, don't stop asking. The question 'where is Hashem?' is already a prayer. And before any step, the simple question: is His honour here?

Scene 3 · LM II:12 §1 · paragraph §1.1
EN (our paraphrase): When a person follows his own intellect and cleverness, he can fall into many mistakes and stumbling blocks, and come to great harm, Heaven forbid. Some have done terrible damage, like the notorious, very wicked people who led the world astray; and all of it came through their cleverness and their intellect.
Scene 4 · LM II:12 §1 · paragraph §1.2
EN (our paraphrase): The essence of Judaism is only to walk with innocence and simplicity, without any clever schemes, and in everything one does, to look that Hashem be there, paying no attention at all to one's own honour. If there is honour of Hashem in it, he should do it; and if not, not. Then he will surely never stumble.
Scene 6 · LM II:12 §1 · paragraph §1.3

EN (our paraphrase): And even when he falls, Heaven forbid, into doubts, and sometimes the fall is very, very great, Heaven save us, so that he falls into doubts and questioning thoughts about Hashem Himself, even so, the fall and the descent are for the sake of the ascent.
Scene 7 · LM II:12 §1, citing Yoma 38 · paragraph §1.4
EN (our paraphrase): For know: the root of all creation is honour, glory. Everything the Holy One created, He created only for His glory, as it says: 'All that is called by My name, for My glory I created it.' Since everything was created for His glory, His glory is the root of all creation.
Scene 8 · LM II:12 §1, on Avos 5:1 · paragraph §1.5

EN (our paraphrase): Though it is all one, creation still has parts, and each part of creation has its own particular glory, which is its root. This is the teaching: with ten utterances the world was created. Could it not have been created with one? But for the sake of reward and punishment it was created with ten. And each utterance has its own glory, its root; for glory is the root of everything.

EN (our paraphrase): And this is teshuvah, for this is the essence of repentance: when a person seeks and searches for Hashem's glory, sees how far he is from it, and longs, and asks, and is pained: 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?' This itself is his teshuvah and his repair. Understand this well.
Scene 12 · LM II:12 §1, on Mishlei 6:22 · paragraph §1.19
EN (our paraphrase): There is much more in this. When a person travels on the road, or travels on paths of the spirit, the Torah goes before him, as in 'when you walk, it will lead you.' There are many levels in this, for each one according to his Torah.
Scene 13 · LM II:12 §1 · paragraph §1.19
EN (our paraphrase): And before every Torah come doubts like these. For example, with new insights in Torah: before one finds them, there are many doubts and confusions, until the matter is sifted and made clear. These doubts are the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the level of nogah; and when he reaches the Torah itself, that is the tree of life. This belongs above.
Part 3 — Even There He Is Hidden
Scene 2 · LM II:12 §2, citing Yerushalmi Ta'anis 1 · paragraph §2.1
EN (our paraphrase): This is: 'If a person asks you, where is your Elokim? tell him: in the great city of Rome.' For even there, a place full of idols and idol worship, even there He is hidden, as above.
Scene 3 · LM II:12 §2 · paragraph §2.2
EN (our paraphrase): The rule is: when he falls there, Heaven forbid, and begins to ask 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?', by this he gives himself life from the life of holiness. For the husks live only from the hiddenness, where Hashem is hidden in the utmost concealment, until nothing at all is known of Him.
Scene 4 · LM II:12 §2 · paragraph §2.3
EN (our paraphrase): But as soon as one asks 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?', it follows that he knows, at least, that Hashem exists, only He is hidden and concealed; that is why he asks where. And by this very thing he gives himself life in the place of his fall.
Scene 5 · LM II:12 §2 · paragraph §2.4
EN (our paraphrase): For 'Ayeh' is the hidden utterance, from which they receive life. Only, the husks live from the hiddenness, while he gives himself the life of holiness in the place of his fall, through his seeking and searching: 'Ayeh, where is the place of His glory?'
Scene 6 · LM II:12 §2 · paragraph §2.5, §2.6
EN (our paraphrase): And afterwards he merits to rise from there completely, to holiness itself, the place where Hashem's glory is revealed; for the essence of holiness is that His glory be revealed. Blessed is Hashem forever, amen and amen.
Scene 8 · LM II:12 §3, on Shabbos 77b · paragraph §3.1
EN (our paraphrase): This Torah, and the teaching that begins 'Those who boast', and everything that was said on the road, such as 'It was asked', are all one. All these teachings are bound together, and they are hinted and hidden in the words of the Sages, in a very wondrous aggadah: what Rabbi Zeira asked Rav Yehudah when he was in a cheerful mood, 'and if he had asked him about all the spaces of the world.'
Scene 9 · LM II:12 §3 · paragraph §3.1
EN (our paraphrase): He asked him several questions, lofty wonders, such as: why is the ox's tail long? why does the rooster lift its eyelid? All the questions there are great wonders, and all of the above is hinted and hidden there. What was brought earlier about joy and a cheerful mood also belongs here, hinted in that aggadah, which was said when he was in a cheerful mood.
Scene 10 · LM II:12 §3 · paragraph §3.2
EN (our paraphrase): Also what this teaching brings on 'but ayeh, where is the lamb for the olah' is hinted in that aggadah, which says: 'if he had asked him about all the spaces, chalalei, of the world.' This is the secret of the vacated space, the chalal hapanui, which is, as it were, empty of Hashem. But in truth it is surely impossible that Hashem not be there too, for then from where would it receive life? Rather, as above: it lives from the hidden utterance, Bereishis.
Scene 11 · LM II:12 §3 · paragraph §3.3, §3.4
EN (our paraphrase): Also what is brought later about fear, 'yarei Shabbos', belongs here too: every fear has its utterance, and there is one utterance that includes them all. And what is brought later about Divine providence also belongs here, to that aggadah: why does the rooster lift its eyelid? And we did not merit to hear the explanation of all this.
