### Part 1 — Upper Wisdom and Lower Wisdom

- Scene 3 · Shemos 20:1, as quoted in LM II:91 · paragraph §1.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Elokim spoke all these words, saying.
- Scene 4 · LM II:91 §1 · paragraph §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Know that binding yourself in truth to true tzaddikim is a very, very great benefit. Through it one merits complete teshuvah and atonement for sin; the judgments are sweetened and cancelled completely; and it brings about the union of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shechinah.
- Scene 5 · Zohar Vayigash 206b, as quoted in LM II:91 · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): As the holy Zohar brings: 'For behold, the kings assembled.' Two holy worlds, the upper world and the lower world: when they join together as one, then all faces shine, and all sins pass away.
- Scene 7 · LM II:91 §1 · paragraph §1.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): For know: there are two levels of wisdom, upper wisdom and lower wisdom. Lower wisdom is drawn from upper wisdom, and it nurses and receives from there. It is like a teacher and a student: what the teacher teaches his student and what the student receives from him are upper wisdom and lower wisdom.
- Scene 8 · LM II:91 §1 · paragraph §1.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Upper wisdom, what the teacher teaches the student, is the letter yud. What the student receives, which is lower wisdom, is the letter lamed, the tower floating in the air, as the Gemara and Rashi explain. For the heart floats in the air and hears what the teacher says, and through this the listener understands.
- Scene 9 · LM II:91 §1 · paragraph §1.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the student's understanding comes mainly through the heart. The teacher must say things that settle on the heart, and the student must give his heart and reflect on what the teacher said, as it is written in Mishlei: 'to acquire wisdom, when there is no heart.'
- Scene 10 · LM II:91 §1 · paragraph §1.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore what the student receives is the lamed, the floating tower; lamed also means a student, one who learns from the teacher. So the teacher and the student, upper wisdom and lower wisdom, are lamed and yud.
- Scene 12 · LM II:91 §1 · paragraph §1.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And know: the whole of the holy Torah is upper wisdom, and all the wisdoms in the world are drawn from lower wisdom. When the world's wisdoms, which nurse from lower wisdom, are separated from the Torah and from Hashem, from upper wisdom, like a student who does not want to understand what his teacher says, this is the diminishing of the moon, the exile of the Shechinah.
- Scene 13 · LM II:91 §1 · paragraph §1.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): For every person, wherever he is, must tie his mind from the place where he is to the Torah and to Hashem, which is upper wisdom.
- Scene 14 · LM II:91 §1 · paragraph §1.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): But if he separates his mind and his wisdom from Hashem, Heaven forbid, this is 'a grumbler separates the Master,' as Mishlei says: he separates the Master of the world. He causes, Heaven forbid, a flaw in the moon, because he does not tie lower wisdom to upper wisdom, that is, he does not tie the wisdom of the whole world to Hashem and to the Torah.

### Part 2 — The Tzaddik's Ordinary Talk

- Scene 2 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): But true tzaddikim tie lower wisdom to upper wisdom. For the ordinary talk of true tzaddikim, when they converse and tell stories about everyday things, is very, very precious, as our Sages said in the Gemara: the plain conversation of Torah scholars needs study.
- Scene 3 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the true tzaddik builds ruined worlds. He lifts lower wisdom and ties it to upper wisdom through his conversation and the stories he tells to the common people. The mind of simple people who do not tie it to Hashem is separated from upper wisdom, but the true tzaddik ties the mind of the crowd, even the mind and wisdom of a wicked person, to Hashem.
- Scene 4 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is why tzaddikim speak with people who are not upright, or even with non-Jews. In that case the tzaddik draws the good out of him, and what is left is empty, which is like Moshe striking the Egyptian.
- Scene 5 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): When the tzaddik speaks with the wicked and lifts his own mind and ties it to Hashem, he raises and ties their minds, from where they are, to Hashem. The true tzaddik narrows his mind and speaks with them with wondrous wisdom and great skill, ties every word to Hashem, and so brings them to teshuvah.
- Scene 7 · Devarim 33:3, as quoted in LM II:91 · paragraph §2.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is the meaning of the verse in Devarim: 'They follow at Your feet, carrying Your words.' Our Sages taught: these are Torah scholars who wear out their feet going from town to town, discussing the words of the Omnipresent.
- Scene 8 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): For true tzaddikim sometimes speak with the wicked and tell them about wars and other worldly affairs. But they clothe in this the great light of the Torah. They dress the light of the Torah in garments, one different from the next, until it is dressed in these very words, and the light of the Torah is clothed in other combinations.
- Scene 9 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): For if the tzaddik were to speak Torah openly to the wicked person right away, he could become even more of a heretic and more wicked. As Hoshea says: 'the righteous walk in them, and sinners stumble in them.' And as the Gemara says: if he is worthy, it becomes a medicine of life for him; if not, it becomes a deadly poison.
- Scene 10 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore, if the Torah were revealed to him as it is, he would turn further away, because it would become a deadly poison for him, Heaven forbid, since he is far from the Torah.
- Scene 11 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore the Torah must be clothed for him in other combinations. So we find with King Ptolemy, who seated seventy two elders: Hashem put it into the heart of each one to clothe the Torah in other combinations, and they wrote, 'Elokim created in the beginning,' as the Gemara in Megillah tells and Rashi explains. For had they written the Torah as it is, he would have turned further away.
- Scene 13 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore true tzaddikim must speak ordinary talk with the crowd, and clothe the Torah in it. With these words they tie them from the place where they are, for they are not far from these words and stories that the tzaddik tells them, and through this he ties them and lifts them to Hashem.
- Scene 14 · LM II:91 §2 · paragraph §2.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'discussing the words of the Omnipresent,' the place: he speaks with each person according to his place, where he is. He carries those words and gives them to Hashem, for he ties them to their root, to upper wisdom. So the true tzaddik ties lower wisdom to upper wisdom.

### Part 3 — Who Will Rise Up for Me

- Scene 2 · LM II:91 §3 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): For this reason, when a tzaddik passes from the world, there is great pain to Hashem. For Hashem does not desire the death of the wicked, but their good, that they return in teshuvah. And the tzaddik used to tie them and lift them to Hashem and bring them back in teshuvah, because he ties lower wisdom to upper wisdom.
- Scene 3 · Sotah 13b and the Midrash, as quoted in LM II:91 · paragraph §3.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what the Midrash brings: when Moshe Rabbeinu passed away, the Holy One, blessed be He, cried out: 'Woe, who will rise up for Me against the evildoers?' For Me, li, exactly: the lamed and yud, upper wisdom and lower wisdom.
- Scene 4 · LM II:91 §3 · paragraph §3.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is: who will rise and lift and tie li, lower wisdom with upper wisdom, against the evildoers: who will lift lower wisdom out of all the bad in the world, tie it to Hashem, and raise it to upper wisdom. That is li, the joining of lower wisdom with upper wisdom.
- Scene 5 · LM II:91 §3 · paragraph §3.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): For Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, could surely do this greatly: lift lower wisdom out of all the bad and wicked people in the world.
- Scene 7 · LM II:91 §3 · paragraph §3.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore the main thing is to bind yourself to true tzaddikim. For the tzaddik lifts and ties lower wisdom to upper wisdom, and then, from the flaw of the moon, the moon becomes full.
- Scene 8 · Zohar Vayigash, as quoted in LM II:91 · paragraph §3.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'For behold, the kings assembled, they passed by together': when the kings meet, both of them, in one will, then all the masters of judgment are subdued and pass from the world.
- Scene 9 · LM II:91 §3 · paragraph §3.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Then it is like the verse in Kings: 'Shlomo's wisdom grew great,' and the Targum renders it: 'the moon grew full,' meaning the flaw of the moon is filled. And then all judgments are sweetened and all sins are atoned.
- Scene 10 · LM II:91 §3 · paragraph §3.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): As the Zohar brings here and in many places: the main sweetening of judgments, the atonement of sins, the completeness of all the lights, the filling of the moon's flaw and the repair of all the worlds, all of it comes through the lower world joining the upper world, which are lower wisdom and upper wisdom.
- Scene 11 · LM II:91 §3 · paragraph §3.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): And all this is through the tzaddik, who ties lower wisdom to upper wisdom through his conversation, clothing the light of the Torah in stories.
- Scene 12 · LM II:91 §4 · paragraph §4.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is: 'Elokim spoke.'
- Scene 13 · LM II:91 §4 · paragraph §4.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Vayedaber, spoke, is a word of joining and binding, as the Gemara says, 'they saw her speaking.'
- Scene 14 · LM II:91 §4 · paragraph §4.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Elokim es' is lower wisdom and upper wisdom. Elokim is lower wisdom, as is known. Es is upper wisdom, as in 'es hashamayim,' the heavens. To join and bind lower wisdom with upper wisdom happens through:
- Scene 15 · LM II:91 §4 · paragraph §4.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'These words, saying.' That is, through the tzaddik who clothes these words, the words of the Torah, in stories. Lemor, saying, is a word of clothing, as in Eichah: 'He fulfilled His word,' which means His garment. Through the tzaddik clothing the light of the Torah in stories, lower wisdom is tied to upper wisdom.
- Scene 16 · LM II:91 §4 · paragraph §4.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Blessed is Hashem forever, amen and amen.
