### Part 1 — Torah Is Life, Yet Everyone Must Pause

- Scene 3 · LM II:78 §1 · paragraph §1.1, §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): About the conduct of simplicity of the true tzaddik. Sometimes the true tzaddik is a completely simple man, what people call in Yiddish a prostak. He conducts himself in simple ways, reveals no Torah at all, and spends his time in ordinary talk and the like. At that time he really is, in a sense, a plain, simple man.
- Scene 4 · LM II:78 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Know that the essence of life is the Torah, as the verse says: For it is your life and the length of your days. And whoever separates himself from the Torah is like one who separates himself from life. So at first sight it is astonishing: how could anyone separate himself from the Torah even for a brief moment?
- Scene 5 · LM II:78 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): But in truth it is impossible to cling to the Torah all the time, day and night, without a moment's pause. Every Torah scholar, whether a learner busy with Gemara, Rashi and Tosafos and the like, each on his own level and in his own kind of study, must of necessity be away from the Torah for some hour of the day.
- Scene 6 · LM II:78 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And so too a person of deep spiritual perception, even one who stands higher and higher, still must pause and leave his perception for some time. No one can stay attached to Torah and perception without a break; he has to stop for a while, whether for some business or something similar, because one must also take care of the needs of the body.
- Scene 7 · LM II:78 §2 · paragraph §2.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): The rule is this: there is no way at all to be attached to the Torah and to perception without any pause; of necessity one must stop for some time. And in that hour when he is away from the Torah, this scholar or this man of perception is truly a simple man.
- Scene 8 · LM II:78 §2 · paragraph §2.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): At first this seems very difficult. How can anyone part from the Torah even for a moment? It is our life! Who would want to part from life even for an instant? True, our Sages said that setting the Torah aside can be what upholds it. Even so, who would be glad to stop learning, even if that upholds it? Surely it is better to stay attached to the Torah, which is life and length of days.
- Scene 9 · LM II:78 §2 · paragraph §2.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Who would agree to part from life for even one moment? Especially one who loves the Torah, learns with great diligence and clings to it; all the more one who tastes some sweetness in it and finds a new insight, even a plain explanation in Gemara; more still a man of perception, and above all one who reaches the King's hidden treasures, a level the mind cannot measure. How could he agree to part from the Torah even briefly?
- Scene 10 · LM II:78 §2 · paragraph §2.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Yet in truth, as we said, it is impossible to be occupied with Torah constantly; one must of necessity stop and pause for a while. If so, what gives such a person life in the hour he is away from the Torah, when the essence of life comes from the Torah?

### Part 2 — The Great Simple Man and the Treasury of Free Gifts

- Scene 2 · LM II:78 §3 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): But know: in the time the true tzaddik is a simple man, he draws his life from the way of the journey to the Land of Israel. For there are all kinds of simple people. There is the scholar in the hour he stops learning, who is then a simple man. And there is also a truly simple man, no scholar at all, who is nevertheless an upright, Heaven-fearing person,
- Scene 3 · LM II:78 §3 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): and he certainly receives life from the Torah. So too people on still lower levels, and even the nations of the world, also surely receive life from the Torah. And all these simple people need a great simple man over them, through whom they all receive their life,
- Scene 4 · LM II:78 §3 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): because all these simple people must receive some life from the Torah, the essence of life. Yet in truth they are far from the Torah, since they are simple people. So they need a great simple man over them, through whom they receive life from the Torah.
- Scene 5 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): For know that among all these simple people there is the scholar who learns for the sake of Heaven. When someone learns not for its own sake, his learning does not help settle the world; learning not for its own sake serves only himself, and even in that there are levels. Only when he learns for its own sake is he working to settle the world,
- Scene 6 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): when such a scholar stops learning, he is then truly a simple man. And so are the other simple people: each one, according to his hold on the Torah, draws life in his time of simplicity from the way the world existed before the Torah was received.
- Scene 7 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For before the Torah was received, the world stood only by His kindness. There was not yet any Torah, nor any doing of a mitzvah to hold the world up; the world's existence came from His kindness alone. And the tzaddik in his time of simplicity, in the hour he is apart from the Torah, draws life from this.
- Scene 8 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is the treasury of free gifts. There is a treasury of free gifts, from which even one with no merit at all receives. Surely this treasury was not prepared for the wicked, for then the wicked would be greater than the tzaddik! The wicked certainly has no merit at all; should he earn, for that, a share in the treasury of free gifts?
- Scene 9 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): But in truth the wicked certainly does not receive from there. This treasury of free gifts is for the tzaddik alone: in the hour when the tzaddik is a simple man, then he receives from this treasury of free gifts,
- Scene 10 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): which is the aspect of the time before the Torah was received, when the world stood by free kindness alone, as in: For His kindness is forever, said about the time before the giving of the Torah. As the Gemara brings: these twenty-six times For His kindness is forever, what do they correspond to? To the twenty-six generations, and so on.
- Scene 11 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): For then there was no Torah, and people were busy only with settling the world and with derech eretz, as our Sages say in the Midrash: Great is derech eretz, which came twenty-six generations before the Torah. And then the world stood mainly by free kindness alone.

### Part 3 — The Hidden Torah and the Way to the Land

- Scene 2 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): In truth, even before the Torah was received, the Torah certainly existed, for the Torah is eternal. But before it was given it was hidden and concealed. The whole Torah is contained in the Ten Commandments, and before the giving of the Torah the Ten Commandments lay hidden in the Ten Utterances with which the world was created. So the entire Torah was hidden within the settled world, created with the Ten Utterances.
- Scene 3 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And in all the speech of the world and in all work and deeds, even someone chopping wood or doing any job at all, the Torah is hidden in every one of them, because everything was created with the Ten Utterances, where the Torah lay hidden before it was given. And the tzaddik, in the hour he parts from the Torah and is a simple man, draws life from this level of before the Torah was given.
- Scene 4 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is the way of the Land of Israel mentioned earlier, from which the tzaddik draws life in his time of simplicity. The main strength of the Land's holiness comes through the verse: He told His people the power of His works, to give them the heritage of nations. As Rashi explains on the Torah's first verse, it opens with In the beginning so no one can say, You are robbers; He created everything, and by His will He gave it to them, and so on.
- Scene 5 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): So the main power of the Land of Israel comes from the Ten Utterances with which the world was created, which are the power of His works. Through this, Israel were able to go and conquer the Land of Israel.
- Scene 6 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this aspect is found here too, outside the Land. Israel, a holy people, sometimes come to places that were very far from the holiness of Israel, such as a place that once belonged to idol worshippers and is still held by someone far from that holiness. Israel come there, take hold of the place and sanctify it, so that it becomes a Jewish place; this too is an aspect of the Land of Israel.
- Scene 7 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): One could say to them: You are robbers, you have taken a place that is not yours! But through the power of His works, the Ten Utterances, we have permission to take hold of the whole world and sanctify it with the holiness of Israel, for He created it, and by His will He gave it to us.
- Scene 8 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): So the Ten Utterances, clothed in derech eretz, that is, in the settling of the world, since the world was created with them, are a way to the Land of Israel, for through them one can conquer the Land. This is derech eretz: literally, a road to the land, the Land of Israel. The settled world, created with the Ten Utterances, is itself the road and path to the Land of Israel.
- Scene 9 · LM II:78 §4 · paragraph §4.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): And in this derech eretz, the way of the Land of Israel, the Ten Utterances in which the Torah is hidden and through which the world stood in His kindness for twenty-six generations before the Torah was given, in this very thing the tzaddik draws life in his time of simplicity, when he is not learning. He lives from the Torah hidden in the world, in all the speech and all the work created with the Ten Utterances.
- Scene 10 · LM II:78 §5 · paragraph §5.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore the great tzaddik must go down and fall into simplicity, and be truly a simple man for some time. Through this he gives life to all the simple people, whoever they are, even the nations of the world. He draws his own life from the Torah hidden in the Ten Utterances clothed within the world, and from him all the simple people receive life. The closer each one is to holiness and to the tzaddik, the higher the life he receives.

### Part 4 — Moshe's Plea, and No Despair at All

- Scene 2 · LM II:78 §6 · paragraph §6.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, when he asked to enter the Land of Israel, asked for a free gift, as it says: And I pleaded with Hashem, the aspect of a free gift. And this is: at that time, saying. His prayer carried the power of that time, the time when the world stood through the Ten Utterances, before the giving of the Torah,
- Scene 3 · LM II:78 §6 · paragraph §6.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): for then the world stood through the Ten Utterances, in which the Torah was hidden, and then the world existed by a free gift. With this power of the world's existence before the Torah, the free gift, the Ten Utterances, one merits to come and conquer the Land of Israel. That is why Moshe asked to enter the Land through this aspect.
- Scene 4 · LM II:78 §6 · paragraph §6.2, §6.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is: And I pleaded with Hashem, meaning a free gift. At that time, saying: with the power of that time, when the world stood by the Utterances alone, by a free gift, through which one can come to the Land of Israel. That is why Moshe asked to enter the Land through this aspect.
- Scene 5 · LM II:78 §6 · paragraph §6.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is: at that time. The word that, hahi, points to something closed and hidden, for at that time, before the giving of the Torah, the Torah was hidden and concealed within the Ten Utterances, as explained.
- Scene 6 · LM II:78 §7 · paragraph §7.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): The rule is: it is forbidden to despair. Even someone who is a simple man and cannot learn at all, or who is somewhere he cannot learn, must still, in his time of simplicity, hold on to the fear of Hashem and to simple service on his level. For then too he receives life from the Torah, through the great simple man, the great tzaddik, who is sometimes a simple man and gives life to them all.
- Scene 7 · LM II:78 §7 · paragraph §7.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Even someone who is, Heaven forbid, on the very lowest level, even if he lies in the depths of the netherworld, Heaven save us, let him still not despair. Let him fulfil: From the belly of the netherworld I cried out. Let him hold on to whatever he can, for he too can return and receive life from the Torah through this tzaddik.
- Scene 8 · LM II:78 §7 · paragraph §7.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): The main thing is to strengthen yourself in every way you can, for there is no despair in the world at all. He drew out these words, Kein yiush, there is no despair, and said them with great force and with wonderful, awesome depth, to teach and hint to every single person, for all generations, never to despair in any way at all, whatever may pass over him.
- Scene 9 · LM II:78 §7 · paragraph §7.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): However things are, even if he has fallen wherever he has fallen, Heaven save us, as long as he strengthens himself with whatever he has, he still has hope to return to Him, blessed be He.

### Part 5 — Simple Faith and the True Tzaddik

- Scene 2 · LM II:78 §7 · paragraph §7.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Even a simple man must have fear of Heaven. And there are many levels of fear. Above we spoke of derech eretz, meaning the way to the Land of Israel. But the Land of Israel itself also has ten holinesses, ten levels of holiness, one above the other. They are the Ten Utterances, and each Utterance has its own fear, as in: Fulfil for Your servant Your word, which leads to fear of You. For there is a fear above a fear.
- Scene 4 · LM II:78 §7 · paragraph §7.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): He must strengthen himself in fear of Heaven even in his time of simplicity, in every way he can, and he can come to great joy through his wholeheartedness and his faith. For no clever sophistications are needed at all, only faith, wholeheartedness and simplicity, without any cleverness at all.
- Scene 5 · LM II:78 §7 · paragraph §7.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): For such cleverness does great harm. The clever are trapped in their own wisdom: it leads a person astray from one idea to the next, and from that one to yet another, further and further, until he is caught and lost in his own cleverness. As the verse says: He traps the wise in their cunning; in their own cunning precisely, their own shrewdness traps them. Happy is the one who walks in wholeheartedness.
- Scene 6 · LM II:78 §8 · paragraph §8.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): One must ask Hashem very much to merit drawing close to the true tzaddik. Happy is the one who merits to draw close to the true tzaddik in his lifetime; happy is he, happy his portion. For afterwards it is very hard to draw close, and one needs much prayer and pleading to merit drawing close to true tzaddikim in one's lifetime.
- Scene 7 · LM II:78 §8 · paragraph §8.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the evil one has now set his heart very much on confusing the world. Israel are now very close to the End, and Israel now have great yearnings and longings for Hashem, such as there never were in earlier days; every single one longs very much for Hashem.
- Scene 8 · LM II:78 §8 · paragraph §8.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): So the evil one schemed and brought strife between the tzaddikim. He raised up in the world many false famous leaders, and even among the true tzaddikim he put great strife, until no one knows where the truth is. Therefore one must ask Hashem very much to merit drawing close to the true tzaddik.
- Scene 9 · LM II:78 §9 · paragraph §9.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): A copy from our Rebbe's own handwriting, of what we found among his papers. These are headings of the teaching above, with more things in them that he did not explain openly. From these headings the careful reader will see that this subject holds many more ideas like these, but we merited to hear explicitly only the teaching above.
- Scene 10 · LM II:78 §9 · paragraph §9.2
  - HE: וָאֶתְחַנַּן.
  - EN (our paraphrase): And I pleaded. A free gift. Free; matters of modesty. A flaw in knowledge. Moshe, knowledge. Separation. Stand here with Me. Creation, a free gift. The world is built on kindness. Creation before the giving of the Torah. A time to act for Hashem, meaning the making of the world. They have set aside Your Torah: setting the Torah aside. At that time, saying: with the Ten Utterances. That: hiddenness. He told His people the power of His works.
