### Part 1 — Clouds Over the Eyes

- Scene 4 · Devarim 34:12 and Bereishis 1:1, as quoted in LM II:67 · paragraph §1.1, §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): In the beginning, before the eyes of all Israel.
- Scene 5 · LM II:67 §1 · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): For there are clouds that cover the eye: Greater Rome and Lesser Rome, as the Zohar brings. This is 'the clouds return after the rain'. That is the light of the eyes, which goes after weeping, as our Sages taught: through weeping, the light of the eyes departs.
- Scene 6 · LM II:67 §1 · paragraph §1.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is the setting of the light in the west. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so the west is where the light goes down. And all of it comes through weeping, which takes away the light of the eyes; that is the light going down.
- Scene 7 · LM II:67 §1 · paragraph §1.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): For maarav, west, is made of the first letters of 'Rochel mevakah al baneha', Rochel weeps for her children. The Shechinah is in the west, and the Shechinah weeps and wails, as it were, over Israel, as it says: Rochel weeps for her children; she refuses to be comforted, for they are gone. She weeps over the pain of Israel, scattered among the nations and not in their place.
- Scene 8 · LM II:67 §1 · paragraph §1.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why the light sets in the west: weeping takes away the light of the eyes, and that is the setting of the light.
- Scene 9 · LM II:67 §1 · paragraph §1.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is also the Western Wall, the Kosel HaMaaravi, where the Shechinah weeps and wails over the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. For there, in the west, Rochel weeps for her children.
- Scene 11 · LM II:67 §1 · paragraph §1.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): There are luminaries of light and luminaries of fire, and they stand against each other. When the luminaries of light have strength, the luminaries of fire are subdued. And the reverse, Heaven forbid: when the luminaries of light are subdued and withdrawn, the luminaries of fire grow strong.
- Scene 12 · LM II:67 §1 · paragraph §1.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash, as in 'From on high He sent fire into my bones'. The fire overpowered because the luminaries of light had withdrawn, as in 'Rochel weeps for her children'. For weeping is the withdrawal of the luminaries of light, and then the luminaries of fire grow strong.

### Part 2 — The Beauty of the World Revealed

- Scene 2 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is the hiding, when the beauty and splendor of the whole world is concealed. For there is a tzaddik who is the beauty, splendor and grace of the entire world, as in 'Yosef was fair of form and fair to look at', and 'fairest of heights, joy of all the earth'. This true tzaddik, who is Yosef, is the glory and the beauty of the whole world.
- Scene 3 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): When this beauty is revealed in the world, that is, when this tzaddik becomes known and great in the world, the eyes of the world are opened. Whoever is included in the true grace of this tzaddik, meaning he comes close to him and becomes part of him, his eyes are opened and he can see.
- Scene 4 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.3
  - HE: וְהָעִקָּר לְהִסְתַּכֵּל עַל עַצְמוֹ, וְכַמְבֹאָר לְעֵיל, שֶׁעַל־יְדֵי שֶׁמִּתְקָרֵב לַצַּדִּיק אֲמִתִּי, שֶׁהוּא בְּחִינַת: צַדִּיק יְסוֹד עוֹלָם, בְּחִינַת יְסוֹד הַפָּשׁוּט, שֶׁמִּמֶּנּוּ נִמְשָׁכִין כָּל הָאַרְבָּעָה יְסוֹדוֹת, בִּבְחִינַת: וְנָהָר יוֹצֵא מֵעֵדֶן לְהַשְׁקוֹת אֶת הַגָּן, וּמִשָּׁם יִפָּרֵד וְהָיָה לְאַרְבָּעָה רָאשִׁים;
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the main thing is to look at himself. As explained above, in Torah sixty-six, this comes by drawing close to a true tzaddik, who is 'the tzaddik, foundation of the world', the simple element from which all four elements flow, as in 'A river goes out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides and becomes four heads'.
- Scene 5 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'A river goes out of Eden' is the tzaddik, foundation of the world, the simple element. 'From there it divides and becomes four heads': these are the four elements, which flow from the tzaddik.
- Scene 6 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): So when a person comes close to him, it is fitting that he look into himself, at all his character traits, and see how he holds in each of them. For all the traits flow from the four elements, as is known, and the four elements flow from the tzaddik.
- Scene 8 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore, when this tzaddik is revealed, whoever comes close and is included in this true grace has his eyes opened. He looks at himself and sees how he holds in all the traits that come from the four elements. And he can also see and look at the greatness of Hashem, and look at the world, because the revealed splendor of the true tzaddik has opened his eyes.
- Scene 9 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): For when this tzaddik is revealed and becomes known, that is a 'name': he has a name in the world. And inside the name of the true tzaddik, the Name of Hashem is clothed and joined, for His Name is joined to our name. So when the tzaddik's name grows, His Name grows, as it were; the greater the tzaddik's name, the greater the Name of Hashem.

### Part 3 — The Name, the Eye and Shabbos

- Scene 2 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the Name of Hashem is 'Hashem is One and His Name is One'. His Name is a simple oneness, but below, the four elements come down from His Name. For 'His Name is One' refers to the four letters of the Name, and so, below, the four elements descend from His Name.
- Scene 3 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): First, from the four letters of the Name come the three colors of the eye and the pupil, and after that come the four elements. And before that, it comes down as 'the tzaddik, foundation of the world', from whom all four elements flow.
- Scene 5 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'See, Hashem has called by name Betzalel'. 'See', exactly: because the name of Betzalel was revealed and made great, therefore 'see', for the eyes are opened and people see. 'Hashem has called by name Betzalel' means Hashem is in the name of Betzalel, for His Name is joined to our name, and so: 'see'. The power of sight also comes from the Name, the four letters, from which come the three colors of the eye and the pupil.
- Scene 6 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is Shabbos: shin, bas. The shin is the three colors of the eye; bas ayin is the pupil. For Shabbos is a Name of the Holy One, blessed be He. The tzaddik too is Shabbos, as it says: 'You are the Shabbos of all the days.' And this is 'See that Hashem has given you the Shabbos'. 'See', exactly, because Shabbos, the Name of the Holy One, is the power of sight.
- Scene 7 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): So wherever the building of the Beis HaMikdash is mentioned, Shabbos is mentioned: 'Keep My Shabbos days, and revere My Sanctuary.' Wherever He warned about the work of the Mishkan, He first warned about Shabbos. For Shabbos lights up the Beis HaMikdash, and the Mikdash too is eyes, as it says, 'the pride of your strength, the delight of your eyes'. Shabbos is the colors that shine in the Mikdash, the three colors of the eye and the pupil.
- Scene 8 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is also the mochin, the powers of the mind. First, from the Name of Hashem, which is four letters, come four mochin, as it says: 'I filled him with the spirit of Elokim, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge and in every craft.' These four are the four mochin, made from the Name, as in 'See, Hashem has called by name Betzalel… and I filled him'. After that come the three colors of the eye and the pupil, and then the four elements.

### Part 4 — The Head of the House, and the Fire in Zion

- Scene 2 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is why the tzaddikim are called 'the eyes of the congregation': through them the eyes are opened.
- Scene 3 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): So when the splendor of the true tzaddik is revealed and his name grows great, which is making the Name of Hashem great, as it were, through which the mochin and sight are made and the eyes are opened, then the world has a master of the house who watches over it. This is Bereishis: rosh bayis, head of the house. Rosh is the mochin; bayis is the Beis HaMikdash, which stands mainly through the mochin, the colors of the eye, Shabbos, which lights the Mikdash.
- Scene 4 · LM II:67 §2 · paragraph §2.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): Bayis is also the batim, the boxes of the tefillin, where the mochin are, as in 'I filled him with the spirit of Elokim, in wisdom, understanding, knowledge and every craft'. 'I filled', exactly: the boxes that the mochin fill. Then there is a master of the house, a rosh bayis, who repairs the breaches of the house, for this is how the Beis HaMikdash is repaired.
- Scene 6 · LM II:67 §3 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): But there is the very opposite, Heaven forbid: when someone with no Name of Hashem in him at all becomes famous. When his name spreads and grows, the Name of Hashem shrinks and is hidden, as it were. Then those who deal in names and sorcery grow strong in the world, and things come into the world that only names of impurity can help with, Heaven forbid. All this is the opposite of the Name of Hashem, because His Name is hidden.
- Scene 7 · LM II:67 §3 · paragraph §3.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Then the luminaries of light withdraw and are subdued, Heaven forbid. They are the light of the eyes, the three colors of the eye and the pupil, which come from the Name of Hashem. And when the luminaries of light are subdued, the luminaries of fire grow strong.
- Scene 8 · LM II:67 §3 · paragraph §3.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): From this, fires come into the world, Heaven forbid, because the names of these false celebrities grow strong and great. That hides the Name of Hashem, subdues the luminaries of light, and strengthens the luminaries of fire, as in 'From on high He sent fire'. This is the burning of the Beis HaMikdash, which also came from the luminaries of light withdrawing.
- Scene 9 · LM II:67 §4 · paragraph §4.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'He kindled a fire in Zion, and it consumed her foundations'. 'Her foundations' are the four elements, which come from the luminaries of light, the three colors of the eye and the pupil. They were consumed and burned when 'He kindled a fire in Zion', when the luminaries of fire grew strong.

### Part 5 — Splendor Instead of Ashes

- Scene 2 · LM II:67 §5 · paragraph §5.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Now, what is past is past: our Beis HaMikdash has already burned. But now, when Hashem is waiting to return to us and build our Beis HaMikdash again, we must not hold up its building, Heaven forbid, but work for it. So a person must be very careful to rise at chatzos and mourn the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. Perhaps in an earlier life he caused its destruction; and even if not, perhaps he is now holding up its building, and that counts as if he destroyed it.
- Scene 3 · LM II:67 §5 · paragraph §5.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): So he must be very careful to rise at chatzos and mourn greatly over the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. And Hashem has promised everyone who mourns for Zion: 'to give the mourners of Zion splendor instead of ashes'. Pe'er tachas efer, exactly.
- Scene 4 · LM II:67 §5 · paragraph §5.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Pe'er, splendor, is the mochin, the tefillin, the rosh bayis, the whole range of colors, the three colors of the eye and the pupil, the luminaries of light, Shabbos that lights the Beis HaMikdash. 'Instead of ashes': ashes are the luminaries of fire. The fire that burned the Mikdash will be subdued, and the luminaries of light, which keep the Mikdash standing, will grow strong. That is splendor instead of ashes.
- Scene 6 · LM II:67 §5 · paragraph §5.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): So by mourning for the Beis HaMikdash, he subdues the luminaries of fire, and the luminaries of light, which are Shabbos, grow strong. This is mis'abel, mourns: the first letters of 'Lo seva'aru esh bechol moshvoseichem', do not kindle fire in any of your dwellings. Through mourning, the fire is subdued. And 'on the day of Shabbos': for then the luminaries of light shine, the colors of the eye that light up the Beis HaMikdash.
- Scene 7 · LM II:67 §5 · paragraph §5.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what is written: 'to make the Shabbos for their generations', l'dorosam. Our Sages said it is spelled like dirah, a dwelling. Through Shabbos, the luminaries of light, a dwelling is made: the Beis HaMikdash, which stands through Shabbos. And also a real dwelling: through Shabbos the luminaries of fire are subdued and people are saved from fires. So the homes of Israel stand through Shabbos.
- Scene 8 · LM II:67 §6 · paragraph §6.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is Bereishis: rosh bayis, the master of the house of the world. That is the true tzaddik, the beauty and splendor of the world, who is Yosef, as in 'Yosef was the ruler, he was the provider'. He is the head of the house of the world, for through him the Beis HaMikdash and the homes and dwellings of Israel stand. And when the name of this tzaddik grows great, the eyes of Israel are opened.
- Scene 9 · LM II:67 §6 · paragraph §6.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'Bereishis, before the eyes of all Israel'. Bereishis is rosh bayis, the tzaddik who is the splendor of the world; through him the eyes of all Israel are opened.

### Part 6 — These Are the Offspring of Noach

- Scene 2 · LM II:67 §7 · paragraph §7.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is also a eulogy for the passing of the tzaddik. Bereishis is a eulogy for Noach: the teaching above on Bereishis is a eulogy for the passing of the tzaddik, who is Noach. For it speaks of the hiding, when the splendor of Israel is hidden, when the tzaddik, the splendor of Israel, passes away and is concealed.
- Scene 3 · LM II:67 §7 · paragraph §7.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Now, the tzaddik who has passed away loses nothing by being hidden. Though he is hidden and gone from here, he is great and glorious there, in the World to Come, as in 'Noach walked with Elokim'. But there is very great pity on the orphaned generation left behind, and on the offspring, the children who remain. Of them it says, as a lament: 'These are the offspring of Noach', these are the children of the tzaddik who has gone, the orphans left behind.
- Scene 4 · LM II:67 §8 · paragraph §8.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): For know: all the generations come from the tzaddik who is the head, the rosh bayis, master of the house of the world, as in 'He calls the generations from the head'. All the generations come from the head, the tzaddik.
- Scene 5 · LM II:67 §8 · paragraph §8.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): When there is such a tzaddik, a head of the house, there is a head and there is a house, and all of us, everyone in the generation, are members of the household. But when this head, the splendor, the Name of Hashem, passes and is hidden, then the names of impurity of the outside forces grow strong, Heaven forbid. These are the false celebrities spoken of above.
- Scene 6 · LM II:67 §8 · paragraph §8.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): They are the head of the Other Side, opposite the holy head: 'the head of every street'. That is the false leader, the impure name of the outside forces. And then there is no house, and people roll about in the streets, Heaven forbid. So it is called 'the head of every street': because the head of the house is hidden, there is no house, and they wander outside.
- Scene 8 · LM II:67 §8 · paragraph §8.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Of this it says: 'Holy stones are poured out at the head of every street; the precious children of Zion, weighed against fine gold.' Holy Israel rolls about at the head of every street, Heaven forbid, because the head of the house, the true tzaddik, is hidden, and his opposite, the impure name of the outside forces, the head of every street, has grown strong.
- Scene 9 · LM II:67 §8 · paragraph §8.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): The prophet Yirmiyahu would lament and hold dear the blood of Israel that was spilled, and share in their suffering. He saw Israel led away in chains, their hands bound behind them and millstones on their necks, and he joined them. Over every drop of Jewish blood he lamented: 'The precious children of Zion, weighed against fine gold… holy stones are poured out.'
- Scene 10 · LM II:67 §8 · paragraph §8.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is also 'These are the offspring of Noach': a lament over the offspring left behind. And this is 'Noach was a righteous man, perfect he was': he was, and has passed on.
- Scene 11 · LM II:67 §8 · paragraph §8.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): So all the generations come from the tzaddik who is the head, 'He calls the generations from the head'. And this is 'These are the offspring of Noach': all the offspring, the generations, come from Noach, who is the tzaddik, the head.

### Part 7 — The Beauty of the Esrog, and Rochel's Tears

- Scene 2 · LM II:67 §9 · paragraph §9.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And know: the beauty of the esrog also comes from that head. This is 'He calls hadoros, the generations, from the head': hidur, the beauty of the esrog, also comes from the head, the tzaddik who is the head, splendor and beauty of the world.
- Scene 3 · LM II:67 §9 · paragraph §9.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Now, the main beauty is Israel. Cham and Yefes are also offspring of Noach, yet the main beauty is Israel, who come from the children of Shem. This is 'beautifying a mitzvah, up to a third': that is Shem, the third of Noach's three sons, as the Sages expound in Sanhedrin, 'the third of Noach, the third of Shem'. He is the main beauty and splendor. And he is shem, a name: the holy Name, which is splendor and beauty.
- Scene 5 · LM II:67 §9 · paragraph §9.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Understand well how to tie all this to what was explained above in the teaching on Bereishis, and in Torah sixty-six, for it is all bound together. Look there well.
- Scene 6 · LM II:67 §10 · paragraph §10.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): This belongs above: 'Rochel weeps for her children' is 'the beautiful maiden who has no eyes'. Rochel was fair of form and fair to look at, so the birth of the tzaddik, Yosef, who was fair of form and fair to look at, the beauty of the world, comes mainly from Rochel. But now, in exile, after the destruction, she is 'Rochel weeps for her children', the beautiful maiden with no eyes, because weeping takes away the light of the eyes.
- Scene 8 · LM II:67 §10 · paragraph §10.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): This ties the whole teaching together. It begins with 'Rochel weeps for her children', and then speaks of the hiding of the tzaddik, the splendor and beauty, Yosef, 'and Yosef was fair of form'. For it is all one matter: the birth of the tzaddik, Yosef, comes mainly from Rochel.
