### Part 1 — When Wars Hold Back the Rain

- Scene 3 · LM II:60 §1, on Bereishis 4:12 and 2:6 · paragraph §1.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): When there are wars in the world, reason says prices will rise. For the curse of Kayin is stirred: 'when you work the soil, it will no longer give you its strength', because of the bloodshed in the world. That curse was said about bloodshed; the earth is held to account when blood is spilled. For rain is made from the mists that rise from the land, as is written: 'a mist went up from the earth and watered all the face of the ground'. From those rising mists the rain is formed.
- Scene 5 · LM II:60 §1, on Yechezkel 35:5 · paragraph §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): But when there are wars and bloodshed, those mists become bloodshed. This is the verse: 'you delivered the Children of Israel to the sword, at the time of their calamity', eidam: that is, the mists, eidim, through which blood is spilled. So too with several nations, Egypt, Ammon and Moav: when their downfall was foretold, it says 'at the time of their eid', the mists that turn into bloodshed.
- Scene 7 · LM II:60 §1, on Taanis 8b · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): So when there are wars and bloodshed, the earth gives its strength over to that. The mists that rise from it become bloodshed, and therefore rain does not fall: rain is made from the mists, and now the mists have been made into something else, bloodshed. This is what the Sages said: at a time of rain, even armies halt. When rain comes, the troops and the wars stop.
- Scene 9 · Pesachim 112a, as quoted in LM II:60 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Connected to this is what the Sages said. When Rabbi Akiva was in prison, Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai said to him: 'Rebbi, teach me Torah; and if not, I will tell Yochai my father, and hand you over to the government.' These words are very puzzling: how could Rabbi Shimon say such a thing to his teacher? And if Rabbi Akiva would not teach him, he surely meant it for good. And he was already in prison: how could he be handed over further?

### Part 2 — The Honour of the Torah

- Scene 2 · LM II:60 §3, on Shemos 16:10 and Tehillim 29:3 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): But know: when someone says Torah in public and unworthy students hear it, this too brings a holding back of rain. For rain comes through the honour of the Torah, as in 'and the glory of Hashem appeared in the cloud', and through the cloud the rain comes. This is 'the Kel of glory thunders, Hashem is upon many waters': the rains that come through the glory of Hashem, the honour of the Torah.
- Scene 3 · Chullin 133a, as quoted in LM II:60 §3 · paragraph §3.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And of one who teaches Torah to an unworthy student, the Sages said he is like one who throws a stone to Markulis, an idol. And the Sages explained that Markulis means 'mar kilus', the opposite of honour. So teaching Torah to an unworthy student is the reverse of honour, and therefore it brings a holding back of rain, the reverse of the honour through which rain comes.
- Scene 4 · LM II:60 §3, on Mishlei 26:1 and 26:8 · paragraph §3.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'like rain in the harvest, so honour does not suit a fool'. Teaching Torah to an unworthy student is 'giving honour to a fool': he gives the honour of the Torah to a fool, an unworthy student, and so he spoils the rains. 'Like rain in the harvest' means spoiled rain, falling out of its season, for at harvest time rain actually does harm. 'So honour does not suit a fool': for that itself spoils the rains.
- Scene 6 · LM II:60 §4 · paragraph §4.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai said to Rabbi Akiva: 'Teach me Torah; and if not, I will tell…' For Rabbi Akiva would gather great assemblies and teach in public, and Rabbi Shimon reasoned that this was why he had been put in prison: because he taught in public, and people who were not worthy heard him.
- Scene 7 · LM II:60 §4, on Shemos 25:2 · paragraph §4.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For through new Torah insights that are revealed, Elokus, the presence of Hashem, is drawn down, as it were. As is written: 'and let them take for Me an offering': when you want to take Me and draw Me down, it is possible only through the Torah. Through the Torah He is drawn down, as it were.
- Scene 8 · LM II:60 §4, on Shir HaShirim 7:6 and Tehillim 68:19 · paragraph §4.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And where is Elokus drawn? Into the mind of the listener. And this is a kind of captivity, as it were, as in 'a king bound in the tresses', in the channels of the mind: 'bound', precisely. For His presence drawn into the channels of the mind is a kind of captivity, as in 'you have taken captives'. Even so, it pleases Hashem to be drawn down, as it were, through the Torah, though it is like captivity.
- Scene 9 · LM II:60 §4, on Bereishis 42:16 · paragraph §4.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): But when one teaches Torah to an unworthy student and draws His presence into that student's mind, that is real captivity, and so his punishment is captivity. So Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai reasoned that this was why Rabbi Akiva was imprisoned: through the imprisonment, the words he had placed in unworthy students would be repaired and refined, as in 'and you shall be held in prison, so that your words may be tested'.
- Scene 10 · LM II:60 §4 · paragraph §4.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): So Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai told Rabbi Akiva to teach him Torah. For by teaching Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai now, that flaw would be repaired: the flaw of having taught Torah to students who were not worthy.

### Part 3 — I Will Speak to Yochai My Father

- Scene 2 · LM II:60 §5 · paragraph §5.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And if not, I will speak': precisely, 'I will speak'. Rabbi Shimon told Rabbi Akiva that if he did not want to teach him Torah, then 'I', Rabbi Shimon, 'will speak' Torah.
- Scene 3 · LM II:60 §5, on Kesubos 96a and Iyov 6:14 · paragraph §5.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'I will speak to Yochai my father'. For all the new Torah insights that are revealed reveal chasadim, kindnesses, as the Sages said: whoever keeps his student from serving him is as if he withholds kindness from him, as is said, 'to one who withholds kindness from his friend'.
- Scene 4 · LM II:60 §5, on Berachos 27b · paragraph §5.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Every person has chasadim and gevuros, kindnesses and strengths; the kindnesses come from the father's side. Rabbi Akiva had no kindness from the father's side, for he was a son of converts and had no merit of ancestors, as the Sages said: they did not want to appoint Rabbi Akiva as Nasi, because he had no ancestral merit.
- Scene 5 · LM II:60 §5 · paragraph §5.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Rabbi Shimon reasoned that this was why Rabbi Akiva did not want to say Torah: because he had no kindness from the father's side. But Rabbi Shimon surely had kindness from his father, Rabbi Yochai, a great man in Israel. So he said: 'if not, I will speak to Yochai my father': I will speak the Torah that is 'Yochai my father', the kindness from the father's side, the source of revealed Torah; for revealing Torah is revealing kindness.
- Scene 7 · LM II:60 §5 · paragraph §5.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'and hand you over to the government'. Rabbi Shimon was saying: Rabbi Akiva does not want to say Torah and reveal kindness, though by revealing kindness through the Torah he would say now, he would repair that flaw of having taught Torah to unworthy students.
- Scene 8 · LM II:60 §5 · paragraph §5.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): But Rabbi Akiva would not reveal new Torah and kindness, since he had no kindness from the father's side. And Rabbi Shimon said this was only from Rabbi Akiva's humility: in his humility he thought he could not reveal Torah without kindness from the father's side, and could repair the flaw only through prison, for prison repairs and refines the words.
- Scene 9 · LM II:60 §5 · paragraph §5.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): But in truth Rabbi Akiva is so great a teacher that he has kindness of his own, and needs no ancestral merit at all. He can reveal Torah through the kindness he has in himself alone, and so repair that flaw.
- Scene 10 · LM II:60 §5 · paragraph §5.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): So Rabbi Shimon said 'I will speak': I will speak Torah, for I have kindness from the father's side, and by this I will bring Rabbi Akiva into gadlus, an expanded mind, until he is compelled, even against his will, to say Torah. For truly Rabbi Akiva can surely reveal Torah without ancestral merit; he is great enough to do it through his own kindness. Only, he is humble.
- Scene 11 · LM II:60 §5 · paragraph §5.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And when Rabbi Shimon, his student, who has kindness from the father's side, reveals Torah, he will bring Rabbi Akiva into gadlus, until he is compelled to say Torah even though he does not want to.
- Scene 12 · LM II:60 §5 · paragraph §5.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'and if not': Rabbi Shimon said to Rabbi Akiva, if you do not want to say Torah, and it is from your humility, then 'I will speak to Yochai my father': I will say Torah, for I have kindness from the father's side. 'And hand you over to malchus': I will bring you, against your will, to malchus, to gadlus, and you will be compelled to reveal Torah, which is the revealing of kindness.
- Scene 13 · LM II:60 §5 · paragraph §5.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): For when Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai, his student, says Torah, he will bring Rabbi Akiva into gadlus against his will, and he will be compelled to say Torah, which reveals kindness and repairs that flaw.
- Scene 14 · LM II:60 §5, a note in the text · paragraph §5.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): He did not explain how revealing Torah, which reveals kindness, repairs that flaw. Nor did he explain how, when a student with ancestral merit reveals Torah, his teacher is compelled to come into gadlus and say Torah.
- Scene 15 · LM II:60 §5, on Bamidbar 31:5 and Rashi · paragraph §5.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'and hand you over to the government': handing over means against one's will, as is written, 'and they were handed over from the thousands of Israel', and Rashi explains: handed over against their will. For Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai would bring Rabbi Akiva into gadlus against his will, by saying Torah himself.
