### Part 1 — When the Great Travel to the Small

- Scene 3 · LM II:38 §1 · paragraph §1.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Sometimes the great one goes and travels to the small one, and sometimes the reverse: sometimes the tzaddik travels through the land and shines on his students, and sometimes the students come to him.
- Scene 4 · LM II:38 §1 · paragraph §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And know that this way is great: when the great one travels to the small one, this way is greater still. For it is simple that the small one must come to the great one, since he needs to receive from him.
- Scene 5 · LM II:38 §1 · paragraph §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): But sometimes the great one's light is so very great that the small one cannot receive from him in his place, because of the abundance of that great light. So the great one must lower and humble himself before the small one and go after him, so that the light is lessened and becomes a little more physical, and the small one can receive it. So when the great one must go to the small one, it is from his very great level.
- Scene 7 · LM II:38 §1, on Bamidbar 12:3 · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, was so great that even before great men he had to make himself small and show humility toward them, as it is written: 'and the man Moshe was very humble, more than any man'. Though they too were very great, like Yehoshua and Aharon, Moshe was on so mighty a level that he had to lessen and humble himself before them, so they could receive his light.
- Scene 8 · LM II:38 §1, on Megillah 31a · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Wherever you find His greatness, there you find His humility: wherever there is more greatness, there humility and smallness are needed, so the light can be received.
- Scene 9 · LM II:38 §1 · paragraph §1.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Now when the small one comes before the great one to receive, the great one shines into him. And the main thing is to make expanded mind from constricted mind: to shine into the small one, to broaden his understanding, so he grows out of his smallness and becomes great, coming to expanded mind; and that is a sweetening.
- Scene 10 · LM II:38 §1 · paragraph §1.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Sometimes he shines into him with a bright face and comfort, showing him a smiling, shining face. And sometimes he cannot receive that way: as the saying goes, wood that will not catch fire is split. Then he must shine into him through hardship, chastening him and humbling him, to break him down so he can receive.
- Scene 11 · LM II:38 §1 · paragraph §1.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And know that though the great one must lower himself and set aside a little of his greatness so the small one can receive, this lack and loss of the great one, who must dim his light for a while, is nothing compared to the repair done in the small one, who is repaired and raised. For the great one's lowering is only for a while, and afterwards he returns to his level, while he repairs and raises the small one completely.
- Scene 12 · LM II:38 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): There are differences in the great one's lowering and humbling before the small one, so he can receive his light; it all depends: sometimes it is a mere gesture, and sometimes he must go and travel to him.
- Scene 13 · LM II:38 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Like a candle that went out: when it still has a little light, it can be lit just by bringing it near the burning candle, holding it below, near the burning flame, as anyone can see, because there is still a little light in it. But when it has no light at all, it cannot be lit from afar, only by bringing it right to the light, or the reverse.
