### Part 1 — Simplicity Is the Goal

- Scene 3 · LM II:19 §1 · paragraph §1.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): The main goal and perfection is only to serve Hashem with complete simplicity, without any clever wisdoms at all.
- Scene 4 · LM II:19 §1 · paragraph §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For there are philosophers who say that the main goal, and the World to Come, is only to know each thing as it is: for example, to know a star as it is, its essence, and why it stands in its place.
- Scene 5 · LM II:19 §1 · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): For there is the knower, the known, and the knowing: the power that knows, the intellect itself, and the thing known. In their view, the goal and the World to Come is that knower, known and knowing become one. They spend their days investigating to grasp these truths. Here, clothed in a body, the pleasure is small; when they shed the body, they say, they will delight greatly. So in their misguided view, the goal comes through their outside wisdoms.
- Scene 7 · LM II:19 §1, on Yeshayahu 64:3, Tehillim 111:10 · paragraph §1.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): But in truth, for us the goal is reached only through faith and practical mitzvos: serving Hashem according to the Torah, with simplicity and plainness. Through this itself we merit what we merit, of which it says 'no eye has seen it'. As it says: 'The beginning of wisdom is fear of Hashem.' The first step of wisdom is fear of Hashem; fear must come before wisdom.
- Scene 8 · LM II:19 §1 · paragraph §1.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): And know that it is not as they say, Heaven forbid. For then only a very, very few would reach the goal: the philosophers with great minds. And what would the simple people do, who have no mind for such investigation? They are the majority and the heart of the world. How would they reach the goal?
- Scene 9 · LM II:19 §1, on Koheles 12:13 · paragraph §1.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): But in truth the goal is reached precisely through simplicity: fear of Hashem and practical mitzvos, in complete plainness. As it says at the end of Koheles: 'The end of the matter, all having been heard: fear Elokim and keep His commandments, for this is all of man.' Shlomo HaMelech teaches that the goal, the 'end of the matter', comes only through simplicity: fearing Hashem and keeping His mitzvos plainly.
- Scene 10 · LM II:19 §1 · paragraph §1.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'fear Elokim and keep His commandments': simplicity, fearing Hashem and doing His mitzvos in deed, plainly. And the verse ends, 'for this is all of man': this, every person can fulfil, and through it reach the goal. Since the main thing is to fear Elokim, every person can reach the goal, because this every person can do.

### Part 2 — Amalek, Faith and Prayer

- Scene 2 · LM II:19 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): In truth it is a very great prohibition to be a philosophical investigator, Heaven forbid, and to study the books of those wisdoms. Only a very great tzaddik can enter into this, to learn the seven wisdoms.
- Scene 3 · LM II:19 §2, on Devarim 25:18 · paragraph §2.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For one who enters these wisdoms can fall there, Heaven forbid. In each and every wisdom there is a stumbling stone, which is Amalek. For Amalek was a philosopher who denied the foundation of faith, as it says, 'and he did not fear Elokim': he went only by wisdom, with no fear at all.
- Scene 4 · LM II:19 §2, on Chavakuk 2:4, Mishlei 24:16 · paragraph §2.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): But when the tzaddik enters these seven wisdoms, he holds on and stays standing through faith, as in 'the tzaddik lives by his faith'. For 'seven times the tzaddik falls, and rises': the great tzaddik passes through the seven wisdoms, and though one can slip there on the stumbling stone of Amalek, the tzaddik falls seven times and rises, through faith.
- Scene 5 · LM II:19 §2 · paragraph §2.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'sheva yipol tzaddik vakam': its last letters spell Amalek, the stumbling stone of the seven wisdoms by which people fall, Heaven forbid. But the tzaddik falls seven times and rises, through faith.
- Scene 7 · LM II:19 §2, on Shemos 17:12, Tehillim 119:86 · paragraph §2.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what is written of Moshe Rabbeinu in the war with Amalek: 'and his hands were faith'. Through faith he weakened Amalek, the wisdoms and investigations. 'His hands' are the practical mitzvos, which are faith, as it says, 'All Your mitzvos are faith.' Through faith and practical mitzvos, the opposite of Amalek, he weakened him.
- Scene 8 · LM II:19 §2, on Targum Onkelos, Shemos 17:12 · paragraph §2.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And faith is prayer, as the Targum translates: 'spread out in prayer'. For prayer changes nature, and so the wisdoms and investigations, which go by nature, fall away.
- Scene 9 · LM II:19 §2, on Devarim 10:21 · paragraph §2.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this, for us, is the true goal: that prayer be included in His oneness, as in 'He is your praise, and He is your Elokim'. Prayer and Hashem are one, as it were; this is the true goal.
- Scene 11 · LM II:19 §3 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): The investigators and deniers explain the whole Torah by their wisdoms and heresy. Not only the stories of the Torah, which they say hint only to an idea; even the practical mitzvos written plainly in the Torah, they explain as hints to their own ideas, and deny their plain meaning entirely.
- Scene 12 · LM II:19 §3, on Tanchuma, Rashi Devarim 25:18 · paragraph §3.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what the Sages taught: Amalek would cut off the sign of the bris milah and fling it toward Heaven. For milah is the first mitzvah, given to Avraham Avinu, head of all believers. And Amalek, the root of the philosophers and deniers, denies all the mitzvos, and explains everything as ideas alone.
- Scene 13 · LM II:19 §3 · paragraph §3.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): So 'cutting off the milah and flinging it upward' means denying the mitzvah of milah, flinging it up into the intellect: they explain everything as ideas alone and deny the doing of the mitzvos. Fortunate is one who knows nothing of them at all.
- Scene 14 · LM II:19 §3 · paragraph §3.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore Amalek is subdued mainly through faith, as in 'and his hands were faith'.
