### Part 1 — Compassion That Knows How to Lead

- Scene 4 · Bereishis 41:1, as quoted in LM II:7 · paragraph §1.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamt, and so on.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §1 · paragraph §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'For the One who has compassion on them will lead them.' That is: whoever is truly compassionate is the one who can be a leader.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §1 · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): But one must know how to use compassion. On the wicked, on murderers and robbers, it is forbidden to have mercy. And one who does not know how to handle compassion might pity a four-day-old baby and give it the food a grown person needs, and not what fits such a small child, who can only be fed on milk.
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §1 · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): So one must know how to be compassionate: for a little one, compassion means giving milk, and for a grown person, the food he needs. And so with every single person: one must have compassion on him in exactly what he needs.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §2, quoting Koheles 1:9 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): A compassionate one like this is only Moshe Rabbeinu. He was the leader of Israel, and he will be the leader in the future, for 'what has been is what will be.'
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §2, on Shemos 32 · paragraph §2.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For Moshe Rabbeinu had true compassion on Israel. He gave himself over for them and cast his life aside, with no thought for himself at all. When Hashem said to him, 'I will make you into a great nation,' he paid no attention to it, and said only, 'If You will forgive their sin.' For he was compassionate, a true leader.
- Scene 12 · LM II:7 §2 · paragraph §2.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And he was busy with the settling of the world, that the world be inhabited by human beings. For the essence of a human being is da'as, understanding; one who has no da'as is not part of the settled world and is not called a human being at all, only a creature in human form.
- Scene 13 · LM II:7 §2, quoting Devarim 4:35 · paragraph §2.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Moshe Rabbeinu had compassion and worked to settle the world, so that it would be filled with human beings, meaning people of understanding. For he opened the light of da'as for us, as it is written: 'You have been shown, to know that Hashem is Elokim.' Moshe opened da'as and revealed to us that there is an Elokim who rules in the land.

### Part 2 — The Heaviest Burden

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §3, quoting Tehillim 38:5 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): The main compassion is when Israel, the holy nation, fall, Heaven forbid, into sins. This is the greatest compassion of all. For all the hardest sufferings in the world are as nothing beside the heavy load of sin. When Israel fall into sin, it is a very heavy load, one that is impossible to carry at all, as the verse says: 'like a heavy load, they are too heavy for me.'
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §3 · paragraph §3.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For whoever knows the holiness of Israel, from where they are taken, and knows how spiritual and refined Israel are, knows that Israel are completely far from sin. Sin does not belong to them at all, because of the great holiness of their root and their great refinement. So all the sufferings in the world are no burden next to the heavy load of sin.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §3, on Shabbos 55a · paragraph §3.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Even when a person has sufferings, if there is no sin in them, they are not counted as sufferings at all. As the Sages said, 'there is no suffering without sin': when there is no sin in them, they are not sufferings. The real suffering is only when one falls into sin. And this is the main compassion: to have mercy on Israel, the holy nation, and to take them out from under the heavy load of sin.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §3 · paragraph §3.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, every time Israel fell into some sin, gave himself over for them and prayed for them, as with the spies and the like. For he knew that, by the holiness and refinement of Israel, they are far from sin and cannot bear its heavy load at all.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §3, on Sotah 3a, Tehillim 41:2 and Nedarim 41a · paragraph §3.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): And in truth, where do sins come from? Only from lacking da'as. For a person does not sin unless a spirit of folly enters him. And this is the greatest compassion of all: to have mercy on him by bringing da'as into him, as in 'Fortunate is the one who brings understanding to the poor.' For there is no poor person except one poor in da'as. One must have compassion on him and bring da'as into him.
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Even when a person's time comes to pass away, and the soul rises and cleaves to the place it rises to, in the upper worlds, that is not the goal and completion, for the soul to be attached only above. The true completeness of the soul is that while it is above, it should be below as well. So a person must leave a blessing after him, a son or a student, so that his da'as remains below even when he has passed on above.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §4, on Bava Basra 116a and Tehillim 55:20 · paragraph §4.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): As our Sages taught on the verse 'they have no replacements': one said, a son; and one said, a student. For a student receives his teacher's da'as. And with a son too, there is certainly no merit in leaving a wicked son, Heaven forbid. The main thing is to leave a son who is also a student, who receives his father's mind and understanding.
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And according to the other opinion, a student alone is enough. Since the point is that his da'as should remain in the world, a student alone suffices. For this is the true completeness: that his da'as remain in this world even at the time of passing, when the soul rises above.

### Part 3 — Filling the Earth with Da'as

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §4, quoting the Yom Kippur liturgy · paragraph §4.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): For whoever knows even a little of Hashem's knowledge knows that His main delight and joy is only that we, from this lowly world, should make His Name great and holy. As it is written: 'You desire praise from those formed of dust and clay.' Hashem has seraphim, chayos and ofanim, and upper worlds that serve Him,
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): and even so, His main delight and joy is when the service of this lowly world rises up. So one must leave a son or a student after him, so that his da'as remains below and shines among the people of this lowly world. For when his da'as remains below through a son or a student, it is as if he himself truly remains in the world.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): And every person can fulfil this, raising up students. For when two people speak together about fear of Heaven, when one shines some word into his friend, the friend is counted as his student. And sometimes it turns around: when afterwards he receives some word from his friend, he becomes like a student to his friend.
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §4, quoting Yeshayahu 45:18 and Bereishis 1:28 · paragraph §4.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): Every person must take care to make the effort and work at this. For 'He did not create it for emptiness; He formed it to be settled.' Each one must work at settling the world, that the world be filled with human beings, as it says, 'and fill the earth.' For the true settling of the world is when it is filled with human beings, meaning people of da'as. One who has no da'as is not a human being at all, as we said.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is: just as a person is commanded to bring children into the world for the world's sake, so he is commanded to bring da'as and fear of Heaven into his children and his students. For this is the heart of the mitzvah to bring forth generations to sustain the world: to bring forth offspring that are truly human, not beasts and animals in human form.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): So as long as da'as does not shine in people, and they do not know and feel Hashem's Divinity and His rule, they are not counted as human beings, since they lack the da'as to know Hashem, which is what defines a human being. Then the world is considered empty and void. On this it says, 'He did not create it for emptiness; He formed it to be settled': the world must be settled with true human beings, people of da'as who know Hashem.
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this too is the mitzvah of 'fill the earth': to fill the earth with human beings. That is, every person is commanded to speak with his friend about fear of Heaven in order to bring da'as into him. This is the true settling of the world, that it be inhabited by human beings, people of da'as who know Hashem.

### Part 4 — Chalifos: What Lives On After a Person

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): So each person must work at this: bringing da'as and fear of Heaven into his friend, so that his friend becomes like his student. Then, when his days are full and the time of his passing comes, he will be clothed in the words he put into his friend, and it will be as if he himself truly lives on in this world.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §4, on Bava Basra 116a · paragraph §4.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): As it says, 'they have no replacements': one said a son, one said a student. So when a son or student remains after him, he does have a replacement, since his da'as remains after him through a son or a student.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §4, on Tehillim 49:4 · paragraph §4.11
  - HE: כִּי עִקָּר הוּא הַדַּעַת, וּכְשֶׁנִּשְׁאָר הַדַּעַת אַחֲרָיו עַל־יְדֵי בֵּן אוֹ תַּלְמִיד, נֶחֱשָׁב כְּאִלּוּ הוּא מַמָּשׁ נִשְׁאָר קַיָּם בָּעוֹלָם. וְזֶה חֲלִיפוֹת – רָאשֵׁי תֵבוֹת: פִּי יְדַבֵּר חָכְמוֹת וְהָגוּת לִבִּי תְבוּנוֹת;
  - EN (our paraphrase): For da'as is the main thing, and when the da'as remains after him through a son or a student, it is as if he truly remains alive in the world. And 'chalifos,' replacements, is the initials of 'Pi yedaber chochmos, vehagus libi sevunos': 'My mouth will speak wisdom, and the musings of my heart are understanding.'
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the main thing is da'as, which is 'my mouth will speak wisdom and the musings of my heart are understanding.' This is the main legacy and replacement that remains of a person after him: the wisdom and understanding he spoke with his friend, bringing true da'as and fear of Heaven into him. So the initials of this verse spell 'chalifos,' for this is the true replacement and legacy.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §4, on Sanhedrin 99b · paragraph §4.12
  - HE: וּבֶאֱמֶת בֵּן וְתַלְמִיד הוּא כֻּלּוֹ חַד. כִּי הַבֵּן הוּא גַּם כֵּן תַּלְמִיד כַּנַּ"ל, וְגַם הַתַּלְמִיד הוּא בְּחִינַת בֵּן, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה: כָּל הַמְלַמֵּד בֶּן חֲבֵרוֹ תּוֹרָה, כְּאִלּוּ עֲשָׂאוֹ;
  - EN (our paraphrase): In truth, son and student are all one. A son is also a student, as we said, and a student is also like a son, as our Sages said: whoever teaches his friend's son Torah, it is as if he made him.
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §4 · paragraph §4.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): It is as if he made the student's very body too. For before, he was not called a human being at all, since he had no da'as and was only in human form. By learning Torah with him and bringing da'as into him, he became a human being. So it is as if the teacher truly made him, and the student too is like a son.
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §5, on Berachos 6b · paragraph §5.1
  - HE: אָמְנָם, מִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לְדַבֵּר עִם חֲבֵרוֹ בְּיִרְאַת שָׁמַיִם כַּנַּ"ל, הוּא צָרִיךְ שֶׁיִּהְיֶה לוֹ יִרְאַת שָׁמַיִם, כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיוּ דְּבָרָיו נִשְׁמָעִין אֵצֶל חֲבֵרוֹ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה: כָּל מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ יִרְאַת שָׁמַיִם, דְּבָרָיו נִשְׁמָעִין;
  - EN (our paraphrase): However, one who wants to speak with his friend about fear of Heaven must himself have fear of Heaven, so that his words will be heard by his friend. As our Sages said: whoever has fear of Heaven, his words are heard.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §5, on Avos 3:9 · paragraph §5.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And also so that his words will last with his friend. For sometimes one speaks with his friend, and at once the words pass and leave his friend's heart, and do not stay with him at all. For this, too, fear of Heaven is needed: 'whoever's fear of sin comes before his wisdom, his wisdom endures,' meaning his words endure with his friend. So one who wants to bring da'as into his friend needs fear of Heaven, so that his words are heard and so that they last.
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §5, on Tehillim 55:20 · paragraph §5.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the verse: 'they have no replacements, and they did not fear Elokim.' That is, when a person's da'as does not remain after him through a son or a student, which is 'chalifos' as we said, it is a sign that they did not fear Elokim. For it is through fear of Heaven that one's da'as remains after him.

### Part 5 — Surrounding Lights: Very Near to You

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §6 · paragraph §6.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through this, that people busy themselves speaking with one another to bring da'as and fear of Heaven into each other and to raise up students, the lights of the makifim, the surrounding lights, enter. That is, he merits to understand and know what he did not understand and know before.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §6 · paragraph §6.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): For what a person understands and grasps with his mind is called 'inner,' since that understanding enters his mind. But what cannot enter his mind, what he cannot understand, is called 'surrounding,' makifim, for it surrounds his mind from outside, and he cannot bring it inside, because for him it is a surrounding light.
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §6 · paragraph §6.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): When he busies himself speaking with people and puts his da'as into them, his mind is emptied of the understanding he had. Then, through that, the surrounding understanding enters inside. Because his mind was emptied by putting his da'as into his friend, the makif comes in, and he merits to understand what he could not understand at first.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §6 · paragraph §6.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): There are many levels of makifim. What is surrounding for one person is inner for his friend who stands on a higher level, and so higher and higher. And there is understanding which is surrounding for this one, while for another it is lower even than his inner level, because he stands so much higher.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §6 · paragraph §6.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And through one speaking with his friend about fear of Heaven and putting his da'as into him, his own makif enters inside. And so on higher and higher: each one, by his own level and rung, has his makif enter inside, through speaking with his friend and student and putting his da'as into him.
- Scene 9 · Devarim 30:14, as quoted in LM II:7 · paragraph §6.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the verse: 'For the thing is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it.'
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §6 · paragraph §6.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'For the thing is very near to you': that is, to bring near to you the thing that is 'very,' me'od, meaning the makifim, which are hidden and very far from a person. To bring them near and take them inside depends on 'your mouth and your heart, to do it.'
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §6 · paragraph §6.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'In your mouth and in your heart' is 'my mouth will speak wisdom, and the musings of my heart are understanding': that he reveals his wisdom and understanding to his students.
- Scene 12 · LM II:7 §6 · paragraph §6.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'to do it': like 'it is as if he made him,' as we said. Through this he can bring in and draw near the makifim, which are 'very,' and take them inside.

### Part 6 — The World to Come, and Holding Heaven and Earth

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §6, on Kiddushin 39b · paragraph §6.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): And above everything are the highest makifim, those of the wise one of the generation, the Rebbe of the generation. When this Rebbe and sage of the generation busies himself speaking with his students and puts his da'as into them, his makifim enter inside. And his makifim are length of days and years, for his makifim are the World to Come, 'the day that is entirely long,' for there it is above time.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §6 · paragraph §6.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): For all the time of this whole world, all that was and all that will be, is as nothing at all against one day, even one moment, of the World to Come, which is 'the day that is entirely long.' There is no time there at all, for it is above time. The only order of times there is the grasping of the makifim:
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §6, on Shmuel I 1:20 and Shemos 34:22 · paragraph §6.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): some makifim are 'days' and some are 'years,' as in 'the turning of the days' and 'the turning of the years.' These makifim are the order of time there. And grasping these makifim is the main delight and joy of the World to Come. Fortunate is the one who merits to grasp them!
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §6, on Tehillim 31:20 · paragraph §6.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is the 'goal of knowing': the goal of knowledge is that we do not know. For grasping these makifim, the delight of the World to Come, is 'How great is Your goodness that You have hidden away for those who fear You': they are the great good that is hidden, concealed and closed from every eye. And 'how great is Your goodness' says 'mah,' 'what,' precisely: they are 'what,' as in 'what have you seen, what have you searched,' the goal of knowing, that we do not know.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §6, on Shoftim 20:43 · paragraph §6.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the flow of Keser, the crown. For Keser is a surrounding light, as it is written, 'they surrounded, kitru, Binyamin.'
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §7, on Divrei HaYamim I 29:11 · paragraph §7.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this sage, who merits these makifim, the flow of Keser, must have the quality of 'kol,' 'all,' as in 'for all that is in heaven and on earth,' which the Targum renders 'who holds onto heaven and earth.' That is, he must hold and sustain both worlds, the upper world and the lower world, which are heaven and earth. For this tzaddik and sage must hold onto both of them, to sustain each one according to its level.
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §7 · paragraph §7.2
  - HE: כִּי יֵשׁ דָּרֵי מַעְלָה וְיֵשׁ דָּרֵי מַטָּה, דְּהַיְנוּ עוֹלָם הָעֶלְיוֹן וְעוֹלָם הַתַּחְתּוֹן, בְּחִינַת שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ, וְצָרִיךְ הַצַּדִּיק לְהַרְאוֹת לְדָרֵי מַעְלָה, שֶׁאֵינָם יוֹדְעִים כְּלָל בִּידִיעָתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, שֶׁזֶּה בְּחִינַת הַשָּׂגָה שֶׁל מָה, בְּחִינַת: מֶה חָמִית מַה פִּשְׁפַּשְׁתְּ, בְּחִינַת: אַיֵּה מְקוֹם כְּבוֹדוֹ;
  - EN (our paraphrase): For there are dwellers above and dwellers below, the upper world and the lower world, heaven and earth. The tzaddik must show the dwellers above that they do not know anything at all of Hashem's knowledge. This is the grasp of 'mah,' 'what,' as in 'what have you seen, what have you searched,' and 'where is the place of His glory?'
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §7, quoting Yeshayahu 6:3 and 26:19 · paragraph §7.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the opposite: he must show the dwellers below that, on the contrary, 'the whole earth is full of His glory.' For there are 'dwellers in the dust,' people on the lowest level, who imagine they are very far from Hashem. The tzaddik must rouse and wake them, as in 'Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust,' and reveal to them that Hashem is with them and they are close to Him; to strengthen them so they never despair, Heaven forbid, for they are still near to Hashem, since the whole earth is full of His glory.
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §7 · paragraph §7.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the 'kol,' 'all,' that the tzaddik has: 'for all in heaven and on earth,' holding heaven and earth. He holds and sustains both worlds: the upper world he sustains with 'mah,' 'where is the place of His glory,' and the lower world with 'the whole earth is full of His glory.'

### Part 7 — Never Despair, and Knowing What Not to Say

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §7, referring to LM II:68 · paragraph §7.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): See later in the book, Torah sixty-eight, where this is explained a little more. The rule is: the tzaddik's main completeness is when he has both these qualities, that he knows how to speak, teach and shine into each and every one, into the dwellers above and the dwellers below, the upper and the lower, heaven and earth, which are the great and the small.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §7 · paragraph §7.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is, to the great in stature, the elevated ones, the dwellers above, the tzaddik must have the strength to show and reveal that they still know nothing at all of Hashem, as in 'what have you seen, what have you searched.' This teaching and grasp he must shine into the great ones, the dwellers above.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §7 · paragraph §7.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the opposite: there are people lying on a very low level, so low that they would give up on themselves completely, Heaven forbid, because it seems to them that they are very far from Hashem, and that their hope in Hashem is already lost. The tzaddik must have the strength to rouse them and wake them, so that they never give up on themselves in any way in the world, whatever may be,
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §7 · paragraph §7.6, §7.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): and to show them and shine into them that Hashem is still with them, beside them and close to them, even right inside the earth. Even if one has fallen to the lowest depths, Heaven forbid, even so, precisely there His glory is found, for the whole earth is full of His glory. And this is the 'kol,' 'all,' that the tzaddik has, as we said.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Also, this sage of the generation must know which makifim he should draw down and which he should not. Because of this, there are things one may not reveal before students, for if he reveals them, other makifim will enter his mind, as we said. And sometimes one should not receive these makifim,
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): for example, when a rav is explaining to his student some explanation in Gemara, Rashi and Tosafos, and in the middle of his words he comes upon a question. That question was at first a makif for him, for he did not know of it at first. As soon as the question falls into his mind, he says it before his student, and while he is explaining the question, an answer to it falls into his mind.
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): So he has grasped another makif, the answer to the question, and then he says the answer too before the student. But when he reveals the answer before the student, yet another makif enters him, and then, through this new understanding that came to him, the question returns to its place. On the contrary, now the question is stronger and wider than before.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): So by revealing the answer before the student, another makif, a new understanding, entered him, and through it the question came back to its place with greater force, for now the question is stronger and wider than at first.
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): So too in higher understanding, there are things that are forbidden to reveal. For if he reveals this answer before the student, a new makif will enter him, by which the question will be stronger and wider than before, until he could come into understandings of makifim that are above time, where time is not enough to explain the questions and answers there, for they are above time.
- Scene 12 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): For whenever he reveals some understanding, question or answer, a new understanding enters him, which is a makif, as we said. So if he is not careful with his words, to weigh what to reveal and what not to reveal, he will enter into questions and answers that time is not enough to explain, for they are makifim above time.
- Scene 13 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): So the sage must make a fence for his words, to be exact and careful what to reveal and what not to reveal, so that he grasps only the makifim he needs to grasp, and does not come to grasp makifim that he need not grasp.

### Part 8 — Be Silent: Moshe, Rabbi Akiva and Pirkei Avos

- Scene 2 · Menachos 29b, as quoted in LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is what our Sages said: when Moshe went up on high, he found the Holy One, blessed be He, tying crowns onto the letters. He said to Him: Master of the world, who holds You back? He said: in the future a man will arise named Akiva ben Yosef, who will expound on every single crownlet heaps upon heaps of laws. Moshe said: Master of the world, it would be fitting that the Torah be given through him! He said to him: Be silent; so it arose in thought.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): At first glance this is difficult: why did Hashem say 'be silent'? Moshe had already asked his question; what silence is this? But as soon as Moshe said the question, an answer fell into his mind. Had he said the answer, another makif would have entered him, and he would have come to a question stronger and wider than the first. So Hashem told him 'be silent' about the answer: do not reveal it, so as not to come to a question even stronger than the first.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'so it arose in thought': as soon as the inner understanding is revealed, a new understanding arises in the mind, for another makif enters inside. So one must be silent, so as not to come to makifim that one need not grasp. This is 'be silent; so it arose in thought.'
- Scene 5 · Avos 1:1, as quoted in LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the meaning of: 'Be deliberate in judgement, raise up many students, and make a fence for the Torah.'
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Be deliberate in judgement': the sage must have deliberateness, to know how to speak with each and every person. Before the dwellers above he reveals the grasp of 'mah,' 'what have you seen'; and before the dwellers below he reveals the grasp of 'the whole earth is full of His glory.'
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §8, quoting Tehillim 75:8 · paragraph §8.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'judgement,' mishpat, as in 'For Elokim judges: this one He lowers and this one He raises.' The high ones he must lower, showing them that they know nothing at all of Hashem's knowledge; and the small ones, the dwellers in the dust, he must raise, rousing and waking them not to despair, for the whole earth is full of His glory. And this is
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'raise up many students': for when he merits such a grasp, to shine into great and small, he will surely raise up many students, for they all need him, since he has the strength to learn with all of them. And this is
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §8, on Avos 3:13 · paragraph §8.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'make a fence for the Torah,' as in 'a fence for wisdom is silence.' He must make a fence for his words, and sometimes be silent, as in 'be silent; so it arose in thought.'
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): For by raising up many students, he merits to grasp the makifim, understanding what he could not grasp before. So he must make a fence for his words and sometimes be silent, so as not to enter makifim that are above time, where time is not enough to explain the questions and answers there.

### Part 9 — Son and Student: Two Kinds of Grasp

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): And these two levels, of the dwellers above and the dwellers below, the grasp of 'mah' and the grasp of 'the whole earth is full of His glory,' are the grasp of a son and the grasp of a student.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): For although son and student are all one, as we said, since a son is also a student and a student is like a son, as if the teacher made him, even so there is a difference between a son and a student. A son who is also a student has an extra level over a student alone, for the son is drawn entirely from the father, from head to foot, with not a single hair that is not drawn from the father's mind. So the grasp of the son is higher than the grasp of the student.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §8, on Yevamos 49b and Shemos 33:20 · paragraph §8.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the difference between the prophecy of Moshe Rabbeinu and that of the other prophets. Moshe saw through a clear lens, and they saw through a lens that was not clear. This is the difference between the grasp of the dwellers above and that of the dwellers below, which are son and student. For Moshe grasped 'no man can see Me and live,' which is the grasp of 'mah,' 'what have you seen,' the grasp of the dwellers above, the son.
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §8, on Yeshayahu 6:1–3 · paragraph §8.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): And Yeshayahu, who was on a lower level than Moshe, said, 'I saw Hashem.' This is the grasp of the dwellers below, the student, 'the whole earth is full of His glory.' For although Yeshayahu knew that there is a grasp of 'mah,' even so he spoke according to his level, which was the grasp of 'the whole earth is full of His glory': 'I saw Hashem.'
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.15
  - EN (our paraphrase): So son and student are the levels of the dwellers above and the dwellers below. The grasp of 'mah,' 'what have you seen, what have you searched,' 'where is the place of His glory,' 'no man can see Me and live,' is the grasp of the son, the dwellers above. And the grasp of 'the whole earth is full of His glory,' 'I saw Hashem,' is the grasp of the student, the dwellers below.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §8 · paragraph §8.15
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the son, who is drawn entirely from the father's mind, merits his father's very grasp, which is 'mah,' the grasp of the Rebbe and sage of the generation. But the student receives only the grasp of the dwellers below, 'the whole earth is full of His glory.'
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §9 · paragraph §9.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And one must include the worlds in each other, upper in lower and lower in upper: the son must include something of the student, and the student must include something of the son, so that they will have awe.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §9 · paragraph §9.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the son, whose grasp is 'mah,' 'what have you seen,' would then have no awe at all, since he does not see His glory at all. So the son must include the student's level: he must be shown something of the student's grasp too, 'the whole earth is full of His glory,' so that he will have awe.
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §9 · paragraph §9.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And likewise the student, whose grasp is 'the whole earth is full of His glory,' could become nullified out of existence. So he must be shown a little of the son's grasp, 'mah,' so that he is not nullified out of existence, and so that he will have awe.

### Part 10 — Ratzon at the Table: Eating and Livelihood

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §10 · paragraph §10.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through the joining of son and student, one who is an 'ish chayil,' a capable and fortunate person, and not the opposite, what people call a 'shlimazel,' can receive at the time of eating the illumination of ratzon, of will. That is, ratzon shines into him while he eats, and he yearns and longs very much for Hashem with a tremendous will, without any knowing, so that he does not know at all what it is he wants.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §10, on Tehillim 145:15, Bamidbar 23:23 and Yerushalmi Shabbos 2 · paragraph §10.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'and You give them their food in its time,' be'ito. 'In its time' is the illumination of ratzon, as in 'At this time, ka'eis, it will be said to Yaakov and to Israel: what has Hashem wrought?' As our Sages said: in the future the partition of the tzaddikim will be further inside than that of the ministering angels.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §10 · paragraph §10.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): The 'partition' is the makifim, the enclosure of the mind. In the future, the makifim of the tzaddikim will be above the makifim of the ministering angels, and then their grasp will be 'mah,' 'what has Hashem wrought.'
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §10 · paragraph §10.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this illumination of 'mah' is the illumination of ratzon, which is above everything, and it is revealed at the time of eating, as in 'You give them their food in its time.' 'In its time' precisely: the illumination of ratzon, which is 'mah,' as in 'at this time it will be said to Yaakov and to Israel, what,' the makifim, which are 'mah,' which is the illumination of ratzon.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §10, quoting Daniel 4:17–19 · paragraph §10.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): And why is the illumination of ratzon revealed precisely at the time of eating? Know that whoever wants to gird his loins to be a provider, to give livelihood to those who depend on him, must be an 'ish chayil,' and not the opposite, the shlimazel. For he needs some measure of dominion, since all livelihood is drawn from kingship, as it is written of the king: 'The tree that you saw, that grew and became strong, with food for all in it: it is you, O king.'
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §10, on Rus 2:14 and Zevachim 102a · paragraph §10.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): So one who wants to receive livelihood needs some measure of dominion, so that he has some connection with kingship. This is 'At mealtime, come here, halom': and 'halom' always refers to kingship. He needs dominion, kingship, at the time of eating, for through it livelihood is drawn down.
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §10, on Bereishis 3:16 · paragraph §10.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): So when a husband girds himself toward his wife and obligates himself to provide for her, as it is written in the kesubah, 'I will work, honour and sustain,' he is then given some measure of dominion, as the verse says, 'and he will rule,' for through the dominion he can draw down the livelihood.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §10 · paragraph §10.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): And so with all officials: whoever must provide livelihood for more people who depend on him needs more dominion, so that he can draw down the livelihood through kingship.
- Scene 12 · LM II:7 §10, on Mishlei 1:24 with Rashi · paragraph §10.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): And kingship receives livelihood from the 'hands' that are in the sea of wisdom, meaning hints, which are 'hands.' As it is written, 'I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention,' and Rashi explains: hints. For when the sage reveals his wisdom, sometimes he says a word in which he hints things to his students, something he cannot explain openly with his mouth; only through the hints in his words do they understand his intent.
- Scene 13 · LM II:7 §10, on Tehillim 104:25 · paragraph §10.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): These hints are 'hands,' as in 'I stretched out my hand.' And these are the hands in the sea of wisdom, as in 'this is the sea, great and wide of hands.'
- Scene 14 · LM II:7 §10, on Tehillim 145:16 · paragraph §10.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): From these hands kingship receives the livelihood, as in 'You open Your hand and satisfy every living thing with ratzon': livelihood is drawn from these hands. And 'satisfy every living thing with ratzon' is the illumination of ratzon that is revealed within livelihood, as in 'You give them their food in its time.'
- Scene 15 · LM II:7 §10 · paragraph §10.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): Because kingship receives livelihood from these hands in the sea of wisdom, there, within eating and livelihood, the illumination of the makifim is revealed, which is the illumination of ratzon; for the makifim shine in the sea of wisdom that the sage reveals.

### Part 11 — The Leviathan, the Manna, and Silence at the Meal

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §10, on Tehillim 104:25–26 and Yeshayahu 27:1 with Rashi · paragraph §10.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'This is the sea, great and wide of hands... the Leviathan that You formed to play with.' Leviathan is kingship, as it is written, 'Leviathan the straight serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent,' and Rashi explains: kingdoms.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §10, on Chagigah 12b · paragraph §10.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): And 'to play with,' lesachek, is 'shechakim,' the heavens where manna is ground, meaning livelihood. That is, kingship, the Leviathan, receives livelihood from the hands in the sea of wisdom, 'the sea, great and wide of hands'; and when the livelihood reaches kingship, there it is ground and crushed, to give each and every one his share of livelihood as is fitting for him.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §10 · paragraph §10.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): So 'to play with' is the heavens where manna is ground: livelihood, which is manna, is ground and crushed by kingship, the Leviathan, which receives it from 'the sea, great and wide of hands,' the hands in the sea of wisdom, which are hints.
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §10, on Tehillim 145:15 · paragraph §10.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'All of them look to You with hope, to give them their food in its time.' Everyone looks and hopes for livelihood, and kingship gathers and collects all these hopes and trusts of everyone in the world, all their looking and hoping for livelihood. With these trusts, kingship rises and receives livelihood from those hands. 'All of them look to You': through these trusts, that all look to Him and hope for livelihood, livelihood is drawn down through kingship.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §10 · paragraph §10.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): And 'to give them their food in its time': 'in its time' precisely, the illumination of ratzon that is revealed within livelihood, which is 'at this time it will be said to Yaakov and to Israel, what has Hashem wrought,' and 'You give them their food in its time,' and 'You open Your hand and satisfy every living thing with ratzon.'
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §10, on Tehillim 44:4 · paragraph §10.15
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'For Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You favoured them.' 'Your right hand and Your arm' are the hands we described, in which the illumination of the makifim is revealed, the illumination of ratzon. 'And the light of Your face, for You favoured them, retzisam': for the makifim are the light of the face, and 'You favoured them' because they are the illumination of ratzon.
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §10, on Koheles 10:17 and Yeshayahu 54:13 · paragraph §10.16
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'Fortunate are you, O land, whose king is free, and whose officers eat at the proper time.' Freedom is the Yovel, the Jubilee, which is the joining of son and student. For Yovel is hinted in the verse 'and all your children will be taught by Hashem': the joining of son and student. 'Your children' is the son, and 'taught by Hashem' are the students. And from the joining of son and student, which is Yovel, freedom, kingship receives livelihood.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §10 · paragraph §10.17
  - EN (our paraphrase): So 'Fortunate are you, O land, whose king is free': kingship receives livelihood from freedom, the Yovel. And 'whose officers eat at the proper time,' ba'eis: 'the time' is the revealing of ratzon, revealed at the time of eating, as in 'at this time it will be said.'
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §10, on Taanis 5b · paragraph §10.18
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'one does not converse during a meal.' For then, at the time of the meal, the illumination of ratzon shines, which is the illumination of the makifim, and the makifim are silence, as in 'be silent; so it arose in thought.'

### Part 12 — Selach Na and the Secret of Chanukah

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §11 · paragraph §11.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the idea of Chanukah. Know that each person, according to how far he merits to accomplish his request on Yom Kippur, the request of 'Selach na,' 'Please forgive,' so he has Chanukah. For through 'Selach na,' Chanukah comes about.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §11, on Bamidbar 14:19 and Taanis 29a · paragraph §11.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For Moshe Rabbeinu asked, 'Please forgive the sin of this people,' for the sin of the spies. Through that sin they caused the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash, as our Sages said that Hashem told them: 'You wept a weeping for nothing; I will set for you a weeping for generations.' That night was the night of Tisha B'Av, when the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed. Moshe asked 'Selach na' for this, for on this sin and flaw all sins depend, since through it the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed,
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §11, on Yeshayahu 1:21 with Rashi · paragraph §11.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): and while the Beis HaMikdash stood, we were clean of sins, as it is written, 'righteousness lodged in her,' and Rashi explains: the morning tamid offering atoned for the sins of the night, and the afternoon tamid atoned for the sins of the day. For Israel, the holy nation, by their great spirituality and refinement, cannot carry the load of sin even for one day.
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §11 · paragraph §11.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): So we need the Beis HaMikdash to atone for us every day. And since our Beis HaMikdash was destroyed, we cannot clean ourselves of sins, for there is no one to atone for us.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §11 · paragraph §11.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, knew all this, and so he gave himself over for Israel and asked, 'Please forgive the sin of this people,' for he knew that the destruction of the Temple, which includes all sins, depended on this sin. And when he succeeded in his request, from this came the chanukas habayis, the dedication of the House, Chanukah, the opposite of the destruction of the House.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §11, on Bamidbar 14:19 · paragraph §11.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): And so each person, according to how far he merits to accomplish the request of 'Selach na' on Yom Kippur, through which the flaw of the destruction is repaired, likewise there comes about the dedication of the House, Chanukah. So Chanukah comes through 'Selach na.' That is why Moshe Rabbeinu hinted the word Chanukah in the verse: 'Please forgive the sin of this people, according to the greatness of Your kindness, and as You have borne...' has the initials of 'Chanukah,' for Chanukah comes through 'Selach na.'
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §11, on Taanis 16a and Midrash Shir HaShirim · paragraph §11.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And all the ideas we have described are included in the Beis HaMikdash, for it includes son and student. Our Sages said: why is it called Mount Moriah? Because from it hora'ah, teaching, goes out to Israel: this is the student. And our Sages also said that it is called the 'inner chamber' because through it Israel are fruitful and multiply: this is the son.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §11, on Shmuel II 24 · paragraph §11.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why the Beis HaMikdash was on the site of a threshing floor: this is livelihood, drawn down through the joining of son and student. And this is the Lechem HaPanim, the showbread that was in the Beis HaMikdash: eating and livelihood, drawn through the joining of son and student, in which the lights of the makifim are revealed, the light of the face. For the light of the face is the three hundred and seventy lights, as is known, and three hundred and seventy is twice 'hekef,' 'surrounding,' as is brought.
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §11, on Tehillim 104:15 · paragraph §11.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'to make the face shine with oil, and bread that sustains the heart of man': within eating, the illumination of the makifim is revealed, the light of the face. That is why the mitzvah of Chanukah is with oil, for Chanukah is the dedication of the House, through which livelihood is drawn and the light of the face is revealed, which is the Lechem HaPanim, 'to make the face shine with oil, and bread.'

### Part 13 — Kohen and King, and the Breath of Life

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §11, on Bamidbar 6:25 · paragraph §11.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'May Hashem make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you,' vichuneka. 'Vichuneka' is Chanukah, through which the light of the face is revealed: 'may Hashem make His face shine.'
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §11 · paragraph §11.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): And Moshe Rabbeinu merited the secret of Chanukah because he gave himself over for Israel and set his heart to look at their troubles, for he was compassionate and a true leader, as we said. And the main trouble of Israel is the load of sins, Heaven forbid, so he asked 'Selach na' for them. Through this came Chanukah, the dedication of the House, on which the repair of all these levels depends.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §11, on Shemos 3:4 and Melachim I 20 · paragraph §11.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is Chanukah: 'chanu kaf-hei,' they rested on the twenty-fifth, the twenty-fifth of Kislev. And Kislev is hinted in the letters of 'Hashem saw that he turned aside to see,' for Moshe Rabbeinu set his heart to look at the troubles of Israel. 'Sar lir'os,' he turned to see, is the language of 'sar vezaef,' troubled and upset. And their main trouble is the load of sins, Heaven forbid.
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §11, on Shemos Rabbah 2 · paragraph §11.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): And when Hashem saw that he set his heart on this, He called to him, 'Moshe, Moshe,' and he said 'Hineni,' 'Here I am.' As our Sages expounded: here I am for priesthood, here I am for kingship.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §11, on Tehillim 99:6, Zevachim 102a and Vayikra 10:11 · paragraph §11.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Here I am for priesthood': this is the dedication of the House, for Moshe served as kohen during the seven days of inauguration, as it is written, 'Moshe and Aharon among His priests.' And a kohen is also the joining of son and student, for of the kohen it says, 'to teach, lehoros, the children of Israel.' Lehoros means teaching: this is the student. And lehoros also hints at bringing new life into being: this is the son.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §11, on Bereishis 14:18 · paragraph §11.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Here I am for kingship': this is the kingship we described, through which livelihood is drawn, in which the light of the face is revealed. And this is 'Malki-Tzedek, king of Shalem, brought out bread and wine, and he was a kohen to the Most High.' 'Malki-Tzedek, king of Shalem' is kingship. 'Brought out bread and wine' is livelihood, drawn through kingship. 'And he was a kohen' is priesthood, the joining of son and student, from which livelihood is drawn through kingship.
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §12, on Chullin 49a · paragraph §12.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the balanced temperament of the lung. When the lung is in balance, it includes all the levels we described. For the lung 'brightens the eyes,' as our Sages said: this is the student, whose grasp is 'I saw Hashem.'
- Scene 9 · LM II:7 §12, referring to LM II:5, on Yeshayahu 64:3 · paragraph §12.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Also, through the lung comes sleep, as explained elsewhere above, in Torah five. This is the grasp of the son, whose grasp is 'mah,' 'what have you seen.' This is sleep, as in 'No eye has seen, Elokim, except You.'
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §12, on Koheles 1:6 and Iyov 4:15 · paragraph §12.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the breath of life within the lung is the makifim, as in 'round and round goes the wind,' and 'a breath passed over my face,' the light of the face.
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §12 · paragraph §12.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): And when the oils of the lung are in balance, the light of the face shines through it, as in 'to make the face shine with oil': through the oils of the lung, the light of the face, the makifim, shines.
- Scene 12 · LM II:7 §12, on Tehillim 145:16 · paragraph §12.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): And in the hands in the sea of wisdom, the light of the face is revealed, the makifim, which are the illumination of ratzon, as in 'You open Your hand.' And this is 'Chatach,' the final letters of 'Posei'ach es yadecha,' 'You open Your hand,' which is the Name of livelihood, as is brought. 'Chatach' is twice 'ruach,' breath: in these hands the makifim are revealed, 'round and round goes the wind,' 'a breath passed over my face.'
- Scene 13 · LM II:7 §12, on Yechezkel 10:8 · paragraph §12.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'the hands of a man under their wings': this is the wings of the lung, where the breath goes round, the makifim, from which the illumination of the hands is drawn.
- Scene 14 · LM II:7 §12, on Mishlei 18:14 · paragraph §12.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'A man's spirit will sustain him in his illness.' 'A man's spirit' is the breath of life, 'round and round goes the wind,' the makifim, from which livelihood and sustenance are drawn, 'will sustain,' yechalkel.

### Part 14 — The Voyage of Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §13 · paragraph §13.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): So when people study and speak about some new Torah insight that the sage of the generation has revealed, awe falls on the one speaking and studying it. For when they review the insight, the sea of wisdom is aroused and revealed, from which kingship receives livelihood, and then kingship comes to draw down livelihood.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §13, on Avos 3:2 · paragraph §13.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the main place of awe is in kingship, for kingship is the source of awe, as they said: 'were it not for the fear of the kingdom.' And then the awe of the sage who revealed this insight is aroused, for everything depends on awe: he needed awe so that his words would be heard and would last, as we said. So when the insight is reviewed, kingship comes to receive livelihood from there, and kingship is awe, and through this the sage's awe is aroused. That is why awe falls on the one who studies the insight.
- Scene 5 · Bava Basra 74b, as quoted in LM II:7 §14 · paragraph §14.1, §14.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the explanation of: 'It happened that Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua were travelling on a ship. Rabbi Eliezer was asleep and Rabbi Yehoshua was awake. Rabbi Yehoshua trembled, and Rabbi Eliezer woke up. He said: What is this, Yehoshua? Why did you tremble? He said: I saw a great light in the sea. He said: Perhaps you saw the eyes of the Leviathan, as it says, his eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn.'
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §14, on Yeshayahu 64:3 · paragraph §14.3, §14.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua are son and student. Rabbi Eliezer is the son, whose grasp is 'mah,' 'what have you seen,' 'no man can see Me,' 'no eye has seen, Elokim, except You.' And this is Rabbi Eliezer, for Eliezer is the initials of 'Ayin lo ra'asah Elokim zulasecha ya'aseh,' 'No eye has seen, Elokim, except You, what He will do': this is the son.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §14, on Yeshayahu 26:19 · paragraph §14.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Rabbi Yehoshua is the student, whose grasp is 'the whole earth is full of His glory,' 'I saw Hashem': the grasp of the dwellers below, who must be roused and woken so they do not give up, as in 'Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust,' and shown that the whole earth is full of His glory. And Yehoshua is the initials of 'Yichyu meisecha, nevelasi yekumun, hakitzu veranenu shochnei afar': 'Your dead will live... awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust.'
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §14, on Bamidbar Rabbah 19 · paragraph §14.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And Moshe Rabbeinu, the sage of the generation, who shines into son and student, had a son named Eliezer and a student named Yehoshua. For Eliezer the son of Moshe is the aspect of Rabbi Eliezer the Great, as the Midrash brings on 'and the name of the one was Eliezer': the unique one. For Moshe Rabbeinu prayed that Rabbi Eliezer would be among his descendants, and so it was.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §14 · paragraph §14.7, §14.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'It happened,' ma'aseh, 'Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua.' Ma'aseh is 'mah' and three hundred and seventy, as is brought in the writings of the Arizal: the makifim, the three hundred and seventy lights of the light of the face, 'mah.' And this is
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §14, on Mishlei 31:14 · paragraph §14.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'they were travelling on a ship': Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua, son and student, were going in the sea of wisdom, where the lights of the makifim are revealed. And this is a ship, sefinah, from the word for 'hidden away,' safun: the makifim are hidden and concealed from every eye. And this is 'She is like the merchant ships,' socher, from 'sechor sechor,' round and round: the makifim, which are the ship.

### Part 15 — The Eyes of the Leviathan, and Pharaoh's Dream

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §14 · paragraph §14.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'Rabbi Eliezer was asleep and Rabbi Yehoshua was awake.' For the grasp of Rabbi Eliezer, the son, is sleep: 'no eye has seen,' 'mah,' 'what have you seen.' But the grasp of Rabbi Yehoshua, the student, the dwellers below, is awake: 'I saw Hashem,' 'the whole earth is full of His glory,' 'awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust.' So Rabbi Eliezer was asleep and Rabbi Yehoshua was awake.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §14 · paragraph §14.11, §14.12, §14.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Rabbi Yehoshua trembled, and Rabbi Eliezer woke up.' 'Rabbi Eliezer woke up' is including the son in the student. For the son must be included in the student: the son must be shown the student's grasp, so that he will have awe. And this is 'Rabbi Eliezer woke up': Rabbi Eliezer, the son, the level of sleep, was included in the student, whose grasp is being awake.
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §14, on Devarim 10:12 · paragraph §14.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'He said to him: What, mah, is this, Yehoshua?' 'Mah' precisely: this is the grasp of the son, 'mah.' This is including the student in the son, for the student must be included in the son's 'mah' so that he will have awe. And this is 'What, mah, does Hashem your Elokim ask of you, but to fear?' 'Mah' precisely, for one must be included in 'mah' in order to have awe.
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §14 · paragraph §14.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'What is this, Yehoshua?': Rabbi Eliezer brought Rabbi Yehoshua to the grasp of 'mah,' so that Rabbi Yehoshua, the student, would be included in the son.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §14 · paragraph §14.15, §14.16
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Why did you tremble? He said: I saw a great light in the sea': he saw a great light in the sea of wisdom. 'He said: Perhaps you saw the eyes of the Leviathan.' Leviathan is kingship, 'the Leviathan You formed to play with,' 'all of them look to You with hope,' as we said.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §14 · paragraph §14.16
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is, he answered that he saw the eyes of the Leviathan: kingship gathers and collects all the trusts of everyone in the world, whose eyes all hang and hope for livelihood; and kingship, the Leviathan, collects all these trusts and enters with them into the sea of wisdom to receive livelihood from there.
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §14 · paragraph §14.16
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through this Rabbi Yehoshua trembled, for awe fell on him, because he had entered the sea of wisdom, where kingship is revealed coming to receive livelihood, which is the eyes of the Leviathan. Through this awe falls, for kingship is the source of awe.
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §15, on Bereishis 41:1 · paragraph §15.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is: 'And it came to pass at the end of two years of days, and Pharaoh dreamt.'
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §15 · paragraph §15.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Two years of days,' shenasayim yamim: this is 'the turning of the days' and 'the turning of the years' we spoke of, the World to Come, 'the day that is entirely long,' above time, where the order of time is the makifim, which are all the delights and joys of the World to Come.
- Scene 12 · LM II:7 §15, on Zohar Vayigash 210b · paragraph §15.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And Pharaoh' is the Yovel, as brought in the Zohar: for from it all the lights are uncovered and revealed, mispar'in.

### Part 16 — Moshe's Burial, and Closing Notes

- Scene 2 · LM II:7 §16, on Sotah 14a · paragraph §16.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the burial of Moshe, which is the makifim, hidden from every eye. And this is what our Sages said about Moshe's burial: to those above, it seems to be below, and to those below, it seems to be above.
- Scene 3 · LM II:7 §16 · paragraph §16.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is the 'kol' we described, 'for all in heaven and on earth': the tzaddik who merits these makifim must have the quality of 'kol,' to show the upper ones that they are below, that they know nothing at all of Hashem's knowledge, 'what have you seen'; and the opposite, to the lower ones it seems above, for they grasp that 'the whole earth is full of His glory,' 'I saw Hashem.'
- Scene 4 · LM II:7 §17 · paragraph §17.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): There are many more hidden things in this, and he explained only a little, a few headings.
- Scene 5 · LM II:7 §17, on Bamidbar 12:3 and Avodah Zarah 20b · paragraph §17.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For Moshe Rabbeinu was humble, and humility is the greatest of all, as our Sages said.
- Scene 6 · LM II:7 §17, on Devarim 34:9 · paragraph §17.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And there is another combination of Chanukah, hinted in the verse, 'And Yehoshua bin Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moshe had laid his hands upon him': in the final letters there is a combination of 'Chanukah.' For this verse hints at all the ideas of this teaching: 'full' is 'fill the earth,' explained above; and so 'the spirit of wisdom,' and 'for Moshe laid his hands': all of this is explained above in this teaching.
- Scene 7 · LM II:7 §17, on Shabbos 77b and Zohar Naso 137b · paragraph §17.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Also on the matter of awe: there are five gevuros, which are five fears, as our Sages said, and there are one thousand four hundred and five gevuros, as brought in the holy Zohar, for the gevuros are included in each other until one thousand four hundred and five.
- Scene 8 · LM II:7 §17 · paragraph §17.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): And all these things he did not explain at all, for these things were said...
- Scene 10 · LM II:7 §18, on Kesubos 96a · paragraph §18.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): This Torah speaks of all ten sefiros: the flow of Keser; Chochmah and Binah; the hands; and awe too. Our Sages also said: whoever withholds a halachah from a student, it is as if he withholds kindness from him and removes from him fear of Heaven.
- Scene 11 · LM II:7 §18, on Zohar Yisro 79b · paragraph §18.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Also son and student. The son: in the holy Zohar, 'what is His name' is Chochmah, 'what is His son's name' is Tiferes. Students are 'those taught by Hashem,' Netzach and Hod. 'Kol' is Yesod, and kingship, as above, Malchus. The lung is the inner organs. And some sefiros are spoken of several times.
