### Part 1 — Faith Is the Essence, and the Wondrous Blows

- Scene 4 · Tehillim 81:4–5, as quoted in LM II:5 · paragraph §1.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Sound the shofar at the new moon, at the hidden time of our festival day; for it is a statute for Israel, a judgment of the Elokim of Yaakov.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): The essence is faith. Each person must search himself and strengthen himself in faith.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): For there are people who suffer illnesses, with strange and wondrous blows, and they suffer them only because of a fall in faith. As it says: 'Hashem will make your blows wondrous, great and lasting blows, and evil and lasting illnesses.' 'Lasting', ne'emanim, precisely: for they come through a flaw in emunah, faith. Through a fall in faith come wondrous blows, which neither remedies, nor prayer, nor the merit of the fathers can help.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): For all remedies come through herbs, and herbs grow only through faith. As our Sages taught: rain falls only in the merit of faith, as it says, 'Truth will sprout from the earth, and righteousness will look down from the heavens.' When there is faith, rain falls and the herbs grow, and there is healing. But when faith falls, there is no rain, and there is no healing.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Also, the main healing power of each herb follows the order of the seeds, by place and by time. One herb heals only if it is cut before it has reached a third of its growth, and after that it no longer heals.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Another herb heals only when it has fully ripened and falls by itself; and so on, each by its own time. And there is an order of place: in one place this herb grows, in another place other herbs, and their healing power depends on their order of time and place.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the order of the seeds comes through faith, as the Sages said: 'Faith, emunah, is the Order of Seeds.' Through faith the seeds receive their order of time and place, which gives them the power to heal. So when faith falls, remedies do not help.
- Scene 13 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): Prayer, too, is an aspect of faith, as it is written of Moshe, 'And his hands were emunah', which the Targum renders: spread out in prayer.
- Scene 14 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): The merit of the fathers, too, is revealed only through faith. As it says, 'The blossoms appear in the land': the blossoms are the fathers, as the holy Zohar teaches. They appear and are revealed in 'the land', which is faith, as it says, 'Dwell in the land and shepherd faith.' The land is the aspect of earth, the vessel that holds them all.
- Scene 15 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): Therefore, when faith falls, neither remedy, nor prayer, nor the merit of the fathers helps, because all of these are aspects of faith.
- Scene 16 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): Nor does the sick person's own groaning and crying 'ach' help him. Sometimes these sounds do help, for they arouse mercy on him. But when faith has fallen, even this does not help.
- Scene 17 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the groans and the cry are a voice without speech. The voice is the aspect of the fathers, for the voice is made of fire, water and air, the three fathers; and they are revealed only through faith, which is earth, the vessel that holds them all. So when faith falls, even these sounds do not help.
- Scene 18 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): And for this very reason remedies do not help. For healing works by blending the elements. There are four elements, fire, water, air and earth, and it takes a great wise physician to blend the elements in each herb according to what the patient needs, by which element has been damaged and weakened in him.
- Scene 19 · LM II:5 §1 · paragraph §1.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): So through a flaw in faith, the four elements are damaged, for they are all revealed only through earth, which holds them all. Therefore he has no cure.

### Part 2 — The Deep Waters of Advice, and Darkness Before Light

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): The remedy for this is to dig and find the waters from which faith grows. These waters are good counsel, eitzos, from which faith grows, as it says: 'I will thank Your Name, for You have done wonders, counsels from afar, faithfulness and truth.' Through counsel, faith grows.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And counsel is the depth of the heart. When faith has been spoiled and fallen, so that even the voice of crying, a voice without speech, does not help, one must cry out from the heart alone. As it says, 'Their heart cried out to Hashem': a cry of the heart alone, without a voice; and 'From the depths I have called You, Hashem': from the depths of the heart. And the depth of the heart is counsel, as it says, 'Counsel in a man's heart is deep waters.'
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): So when the voice of crying does not help because faith has fallen, one must cry out from the heart alone, with no voice, only from the depths of the heart. Through this, counsel is revealed, the 'deep waters'. And when counsel is revealed in the world, that is, when people know how to give counsel to their souls, each one what he needs, faith grows, as it says, 'counsels from afar, faithfulness.' And then all the things we spoke of are repaired again.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): For counsels are 'wonders', as it says, 'You have done wonders, counsels from afar.' Through them, the wondrous blows receive their cure, those of which it says, 'Hashem will make your blows wondrous.'
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Prayer, too, is 'wonders', as it says, 'Awesome in praises, doing wonders.' And so is the merit of the fathers, as it says, 'Before their fathers He did wonders.'
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.6, §2.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is: 'And I taught Ephraim to walk', ragil, which is counsel, as it says, 'the people at your feet', meaning those who follow your counsel. 'Taking them on His arms': this is the merit of the fathers, who are the arms of the world. 'And they did not know that I healed them': for truly, through this, healing comes.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the order of the creation of the world: first darkness, then light. Darkness is the lack of counsel, as it says, 'Who is this who darkens counsel with words?' Afterwards, when counsel is revealed, which is depth, 'deep waters', it is, 'He reveals deep things out of darkness.' And the more the light, the counsel, is revealed, and the darkness, the lack of counsel, is pushed away, the more faith grows.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the main growth of faith is as it says, 'and Your faithfulness in the nights.' That is, the more the night is pushed away and moves toward daylight, the more faith grows, little by little, until in the light of day faith grows to completeness, as it says, 'New every morning, great is Your faithfulness.'
- Scene 12 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): And then, in the light of day, healing mainly sprouts, as it says, 'Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly sprout.' So through revealing counsel, light out of darkness, night pushed away and day revealed, faith grows; and through that comes healing.
- Scene 14 · Shabbos 77b, as quoted in LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what our Sages said: Why do the goats walk in front and then the sheep? Like the creation of the world: first darkness, and then light.
- Scene 15 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): The goats, izei, are faith, as it says, 'Hashem has robed Himself, girded with strength', oz; and, 'Righteousness will be the girdle of his loins, and faith the girdle.'
- Scene 16 · LM II:5 §2 · paragraph §2.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And then the sheep', imrei: this is healing, as it says, 'Says Hashem, and I will heal him.' The word amar, says, is the initials of fire, water, air, from which healing comes. So the question is: why does healing come mainly through faith? Because faith must come first, and only after that does one merit healing. And the answer was:

  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Like the creation of the world, first darkness, then light.' This is the way of creation. The main growth of faith comes through counsel, which 'reveals deep things out of darkness', and faith grows completely only in the light of day. So healing must be received only through faith, for healing sprouts only in the light of day.

### Part 3 — The Man of Understanding, Shakai, and Livelihood

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §3 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): To draw up and reveal these waters, the counsels, one needs a man of understanding, as it says: 'Counsel in a man's heart is deep waters, and a man of understanding will draw it up.' And it is written: 'For they are a nation lost of counsel, and there is no understanding in them.' Where there is no understanding, counsel is lost, for counsel is revealed through a man of understanding.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §3 · paragraph §3.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): The man of understanding is one who has a neshamah, a soul, as it says, 'The soul of Shakai gives them understanding.' He must purify and polish the soul. This is done by drawing the spirituality of Elokus into limits, tzimtzumim, which is the aspect of Shakai, the Name of limitation: Shakai, because He said to His world 'enough', dai. Through this the soul is polished. So: 'the soul of Shakai gives them understanding': by drawing Elokus into limits, the soul is polished, and then he is a man of understanding.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §3 · paragraph §3.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): For by drawing Elokus into limits, that is, into bodies, his livelihood is doubled and increased. Drawing spirituality into a body is an act of creation: a new creation is made by joining Elokus with the body and the limit, which is the essence of creation. And as soon as anything is created, Hashem gives it livelihood at once, for Hashem feeds everything, from the horns of the wild oxen to the eggs of lice.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §3 · paragraph §3.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): As soon as there is a creation, Hashem gives livelihood. For the soul alone needs no livelihood, and the body alone needs none either. The need for livelihood begins only when soul and body are joined together. So by drawing Elokus into limits and bodies, which is creation, the joining of soul and body, his livelihood grows and is doubled.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §3 · paragraph §3.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what the Sages said: 'Whoever joins the Name of Heaven to his suffering', that is, draws Elokus into the limit, which is suffering, 'his livelihood is doubled', as it says, 'Shakai will be your treasures, and you will have silver in abundance.' Shakai is the limit, drawing Elokus into it, joining the Name of Heaven to one's pain; through this, 'silver in abundance', much livelihood.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §3 · paragraph §3.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And through livelihood he polishes his soul. For the tzaddik eats only for the soul, as it says, 'The tzaddik eats to satisfy his soul.' Satisfying the soul is polishing it, as it says, 'He will satisfy your soul with brightness', tzachtzachos. He polishes his soul through his eating.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §3 · paragraph §3.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): Then, when he has polished his soul, he is a man of understanding: 'the soul of Shakai gives them understanding.' Through this the counsels are revealed, and from there faith grows.

### Part 4 — Fallen Faith, Converts, and the Sword of Pride

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §4 · paragraph §4.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Know that through the fall of faith, false beliefs are made and strengthened, the beliefs of idolatry and the like, as it says, 'I will be filled from the ruined one': when one rises, the other falls. For the existence and strength of false beliefs comes from the fall of holy faith.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §4 · paragraph §4.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And when the fallen faith is raised up, converts come from it. For when the fallen pieces of faith, from which their belief draws its life, are gathered and sorted out, the power of their belief weakens, and they return to our holy faith and become converts.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §4 · paragraph §4.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Sometimes they become converts in potential, and sometimes in actuality. Either they actually come and convert; or it is only in potential: as the fallen faith is raised and their belief weakens, holy faith is revealed to them where they are, and there, in their own place, they come to believe that there is One, Eternal, blessed be He, as it says, 'In every place incense is offered to My Name.'
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §4 · paragraph §4.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): This depends on how strong the false belief was at first. When it was very strong, then when it is broken and the fallen holy faith is lifted from it, they become actual converts. When it was not so strong, then when it is broken and turned to holiness, only converts in potential come from it.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §5 · paragraph §5.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Now, the rule: by raising fallen faith, converts are made. And because these converts are made from gathering up fallen faith, they can do harm to Israel, as the Sages said: 'Converts are as hard for Israel as a sapachas', a sore. A sore is a blow, like the wondrous blows that come through a fall in faith; and since these converts come from gathering fallen faith, they are 'hard as a sore'.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §5 · paragraph §5.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): These converts bring pride into Israel. For our Sages said on the verse 'My soul will weep in secret because of pride': because of the pride of Israel, which was given to the nations. So the holy pride of Israel fell to them; and when they return and convert, they bring with them the pride that was with them, and bring pride into Israel.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §5 · paragraph §5.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through this, the leaders of the generation who are proud over the generation for nothing take up the sword of pride. For there are leaders who conduct themselves as rabbis and rule over a poor people, and they are proud over the generation for nothing, since Heaven never gave them any greatness at all; they make themselves proud on their own.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §5 · paragraph §5.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): They take up the sword of pride, as it says, 'and who is the sword of your pride', through the converts who bring pride into Israel. They rule over a poor people for nothing, and they even have the power to punish whoever will not submit to their rule, all through this sword of pride. But in truth this is not called punishing but harming, for they are 'harmers of the world'.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §5 · paragraph §5.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'Converts are as hard for Israel as a sapachas': like sefichim, after-growth that grows by itself. Through the converts, the leaders of the generation take pride, growing up by themselves, proud on their own over the generation for nothing, for Heaven gave them no greatness. And so converts are called gerim, from 'yagiruhu al yedei cherev', they will be cut down by the sword, for through them comes the sword of pride.

### Part 5 — The Shields of the Land, and Tefillin

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §6 · paragraph §6.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through the pride of these leaders of the generation, they strengthen immoral desire in the world, as it says, 'it hunts the precious soul'. For through pride this desire grows strong, and it is the seal of the Other Side, in the language of the verse, 'his flesh is sealed' with impurity. Through the holy sword of pride one overcomes this desire, as it says, 'Gird your sword upon your thigh'; but through the sword of pride these leaders receive from the converts, this desire is strengthened, Heaven forbid.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §7 · paragraph §7.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): The rescue from this comes through the shields of the generation. There are 'shields of the land' who protect us and save us, for they subdue the seal of the Other Side that is made through pride, as it says, 'Pride, the channels of shields, closed up with a tight seal': they close up and subdue the seal of the Other Side, which is the desire made through pride.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §7 · paragraph §7.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And by subduing this desire, the seal of the Other Side, they make tefillin, mochin, the minds, which are the seal of holiness, as it says, 'Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm.'
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §7 · paragraph §7.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the main repair of the mind comes through breaking immoral desire. The mind depends on the body's vital moisture; the mind is like a burning lamp, and the body's vitality rises to it and becomes its oil. So when this desire is subdued and that vitality is not spent outward, it rises to the mind and becomes oil, and that is the essence of the mind.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §7 · paragraph §7.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): So these shields, who subdue this desire, make tefillin, the minds. They lift the body's vitality out of 'his flesh is sealed' and make of it minds, tefillin; for tefillin are the shining of the mind.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §7 · paragraph §7.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why tefillin are called yakar, precious, as our Sages said, 'And honour, vikar: these are tefillin.' For tefillin are made by repairing this desire, which 'hunts the precious soul.' And tefillin are called pe'er, splendour, for they are made by repairing pride and self-glorification, which the converts bring.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §7 · paragraph §7.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'And Moshe was shepherding.' Moshe is da'as, knowledge, the minds, tefillin. He is the holy shepherd, the opposite of 'one who keeps company with the immoral.' This is the seven holy shepherds, 'Moshe was shepherding', the tefillin: the shin with three heads and the shin with four heads, which make seven, the seven shepherds.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §7 · paragraph §7.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the Shakai of the tefillin. It is tzimtzum, limitation: each person must limit his mind and intellect, and not let his mind go out beyond the boundary he has, wandering into what he has no permission for at his level, as the Sages said, 'Do not seek what is too wondrous for you; do not probe what is hidden from you.'
- Scene 12 · LM II:5 §7 · paragraph §7.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is Shakai, limitation: Shakai, 'there is enough in His Elokus for every creature'. Every creature has an 'enough', a boundary, in Elokus, and may go with his intellect only up to it and no further. Each person has a limit to his mind according to his level, and even in holiness he may not go beyond his boundary, as it says, 'lest they break through to Hashem to see.'
- Scene 13 · LM II:5 §7 · paragraph §7.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'I will place you in the cleft of the rock', said to Moshe when he merited to see and grasp what he grasped. Hashem promised to protect him, hidden in the cleft of the rock: that is tzimtzum, so that the mind would not wander beyond the boundary he had.

### Part 6 — Pure Words, and a Dream Through an Angel

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §8 · paragraph §8.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through this, kosher, fitting words are made, to revive and restore fallen souls. For there are souls that have fallen, and they must be revived and restored with all kinds of delicacies that restore the soul, as it says, 'Sustain me with flagons, spread apples around me, for I am faint with love.' Through the repair and purification of the minds, made by the shields of the land, pure words are made to revive them.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §8 · paragraph §8.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For the mind is revealed mainly in speech, as it says, 'From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.' So when the minds are pure, kosher words are made, and with them the fallen souls are restored, as it says, 'seven who give a fitting answer', meshivei ta'am. That is, through the tefillin, the minds, the seven shepherds, come seven who restore with taste, the kosher words that restore the souls who have fallen, as it says, 'Seven times the tzaddik falls, and rises.'
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §8 · paragraph §8.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'The words of Hashem are pure words, refined seven times': the pure words made by purifying the minds, the tefillin, the seven shepherds, which make seven who restore with taste. That is 'refined seven times'.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is a dream through an angel. These pure words are an angel: a dream through an angel. For speech is the impression, the reshimah, of the mind; what is engraved and hidden in the mind is inscribed in speech. And when the minds are pure, making pure words, then even when the mind departs in sleep, and only the mind's impression, which is speech, remains, the impression too is pure: a dream through an angel.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is why, after Moshe's passing, the captain of the host of Hashem came and said, 'Now I have come.' Moshe's passing is the departure of da'as, sleep, when knowledge departs and only the impression remains. Then: 'I am the captain of the host of Hashem', an angel: 'now I have come'. For then the impression remains as an angel, a dream through an angel.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'Hashem gives the word; the women who bring the tidings are a great host.' 'Hashem gives the word': the pure words, the mind's impression, which is an angel. 'A great host of tidings': angels.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what the writings of the Arizal bring: that Tzevakos is the hidden part of Shakai. The hidden letters of shin, dalet, yud, spelled out, equal Tzevakos with one added for the word itself. That is: when Shakai, the minds, depart in sleep, and only the impression remains, which is the hidden part of Shakai, then that impression is Tzevakos, an angel.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'the hair of His head like pure wool.' The hair of the head is the shining of the minds, for hair grows from the minds. When the minds are clean and pure, an angel is made even from the impression. That is 'like wool', amar, the initials of 'He makes His angels winds': angels, made from the impression when the minds are pure. But when the minds are not clean and pure, the hairs, se'aros, become 'and se'irim, goat-demons, will dance there': a dream through a demon.
- Scene 12 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is man and beast: a dream through an angel and a dream through a demon.
- Scene 13 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): For a dream through an angel is man, as it says, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.' 'Our likeness' is the power of imagination, which is 'in our image', like an angel. In sleep the mind departs and only the imagination remains; when the minds are pure, the remaining imagination too is like an angel, a dream through an angel. And this is man: 'Let us make man.'
- Scene 14 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): But a dream through a demon is beast, as it says, 'and the destruction of beasts will terrify them'. Shod, destruction, is shed, a demon.
- Scene 15 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.9, §9.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is in Tehillim: 'Man does not lodge in honour, he is likened to the beasts.' When he does not lodge and sleep in honour, yakar, which is tefillin, meaning he does not purify his mind like tefillin, then 'he is likened to the beasts': his imagination is beastly, a dream through a demon.
- Scene 16 · LM II:5 §9 · paragraph §9.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the letters of malach, angel, are the initials of 'For to Elokim are the shields of the land.' For through the shields of the land the angel is made: they repair the minds and the tefillin, and through this comes a dream through an angel.

### Part 7 — Food, the Seven Climates, and the Strength of the Angel

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): But food too has a share in the dream, for vapours rise from food to the brain, and dreams are formed from them in sleep. So the angel must be strengthened, so that the dream is not spoiled by the food. For when the angel has no strength, the dream is spoiled by the food, a dream through a demon, Heaven forbid.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.2
  - HE: כִּי יֵשׁ שִׁבְעָה אִיקְלִימִים, וְעַל כָּל אִיקְלִים יֵשׁ מַלְאָךְ מְמֻנֶּה, בְּחִינַת: שִׁבְעָה עֵינֵי ה' הֵמָּה מְשׁוֹטְטִים בְּכָל הָאָרֶץ, וְעַל כֵּן בְּכָל אִיקְלִים גְּדֵלִים פֵּרוֹת אֲחֵרִים, כְּפִי הַמְמֻנֶּה, וְעַל כֵּן הֵם נֶחֱלָקִים לְשִׁבְעָה אִיקְלִימִים, כְּנֶגֶד בְּחִינַת שִׁבְעָה רוֹעִים, שֶׁהֵם בְּחִינַת תְּפִלִּין, שֶׁמִּשָּׁם נַעֲשִׂין בְּחִינַת הַמַּלְאָכִים כַּנַּ"ל;
  - EN (our paraphrase): For there are seven climates, regions of the earth, and over each one an angel is appointed, as it says, 'These seven are the eyes of Hashem, roaming over the whole earth.' That is why different fruits grow in each region, according to its appointed angel. They are divided into seven regions corresponding to the seven shepherds, the tefillin, from which the angels are made.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): When the flow of blessing comes down, first the angel appointed there receives it. Then it passes down through the demons who dwell in the air. They receive it only in passing, and take from it only enough for their own life. Then the flow comes down below, to the place and the field it is going to.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): After that the king receives the flow, as it says to the king in Daniel, 'It is you, O king,' about the tree that had food for all. And this is 'A king is subject to the field': the king receives the flow from the field, when it has come down below.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): All of these receive from the aspect of Shakai, and so all are named after Shakai: shed, a demon, from Shakai; and sadeh, a field, from Shakai; and the one who works the field is named after it too, as it says, 'he opens and harrows his ground', yeshaded.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): When the angel is strong, the demons receive the flow only in passing, taking only enough for their life. But when the angel's strength is weakened, Heaven forbid, they take the angel's power for themselves, and the food that grows through them becomes mixed with the power of the demon, for they have taken the angel's power right into themselves. So when the food grows, it grows through a mixture of the demon's power, and when one eats this food, a dream through a demon comes from it, Heaven forbid.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): More than that: they can even make a person impure in his sleep, with the well-known impurity of the night, Heaven forbid. For the angel is fire, as it says, 'their appearance like burning coals of fire, like torches'; and when the angel's power is weak and the demons take it for themselves, they heat a person with this fire and make him impure, Heaven forbid.

### Part 8 — Joy, the Fast, and the Month of Nissan

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): So the angel must be strengthened, and the angel is strengthened through joy, as it says, 'A happy heart makes the face shine.' The face is the angel, as it says, 'and the angel of His face saved them': it is strengthened by a happy heart. That is why the place of the angels is called shechakim, the heavens, from sechok, laughter and joy; for the angels are strengthened mainly through joy.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is the joy of tefillin, as our Sages said that Rabbi Yirmeyah was very joyful, and said: 'I am wearing tefillin.' For through tefillin, the minds, the angel is made; and so joy is needed to strengthen the angel.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why, when a person has a bad dream, the remedy is a fast. For a fast is joy, as it says, 'Make us rejoice according to the days You afflicted us.' Through fasting comes joy, and through joy the angel is strengthened, and the bad dream, the dream through a demon that came because the angel had no strength, is repaired and subdued.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): And so, to one who does not want to fast over the dream, those who interpret it kindly say, 'Go, eat your bread with joy': let his eating be with joy, which strengthens the angel and subdues the demons, through whom the dream was spoiled by the food.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): The angel is strengthened above all in Nissan. For Nissan is the new year for kings, when every appointment of each one is renewed. Then all the angels are given their appointments, and the will of Hashem is renewed, as it says, 'He does as He wills with the host of heaven.' For then all receive their appointments according to His will, and the angels rejoice and grow strong.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): For Nissan is the time of redemption; in Nissan we were redeemed. It is known that the exile of Egypt came to repair the sin of Adam, the first man, in whom, the Sages relate, the impure forces had a share. That came through the weakness of the angel, and because of it came the exile of Egypt. In Nissan we were redeemed and Adam's sin was repaired. So in Nissan the angel's power is strengthened, for that is the repair of Adam's sin, repaired in Nissan at the redemption from Egypt.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what is written, 'And I will bring out My hosts': the angels, who went out and were redeemed in Nissan, for then they were strengthened and repaired. So the main renewal of His will, 'He does as He wills with the host of heaven', is in Nissan, for that is the time of their repair and strength.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §10 · paragraph §10.15
  - EN (our paraphrase): But all through the year, too, one can renew the will through joy. Through joy the angels are strengthened, and joy is awakened in them as though the will were renewed, as though they received their appointments that very day. But the main renewal of the will is in Nissan, their main strengthening. And so in Nissan it would have been fitting for that impurity to be completely nullified, since the angel's power was repaired and strengthened.

### Part 9 — Crooked Judgment, and Binding the Chariot

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §11 · paragraph §11.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): But sometimes this impurity comes from another side. Know that through rabbis and judges who are not fit, who pervert justice, this impurity comes, Heaven forbid. For through the perversion of justice, 'thrones for judgment', loves fall from the Chariot, the Merkavah. For 'thrones for judgment' are the Chariot, and there is holy love, as it says, 'Its seat of purple, its inside inlaid with love from the daughters of Yerushalayim.'
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §11 · paragraph §11.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And when the Chariot, the 'thrones for judgment', is damaged by perverted justice, fallen loves drop from there, and through the fallen loves comes, Heaven forbid, the heat and the impurity spoken of.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §11 · paragraph §11.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): The perversion of justice comes through bad tefillin. There are tefillin, minds, that have dross in them. For tefillin, the minds, are made by lifting the body's vitality from 'his flesh is sealed' to the seal of holiness. But there is a moisture that must be expelled, called in the Kabbalah the drop of Esav and Yishmael; and when this too is lifted to the mind, dross is mixed into the minds and the tefillin.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §11 · paragraph §11.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through this, justice is spoiled, as it says, 'the wicked surrounds the righteous': the dross mixed in surrounds the mind. 'Therefore judgment comes out crooked.' For judgment comes through the mind, as it says of Shlomo, 'they saw that the wisdom of Elokim was within him to do judgment.' So when the mind is damaged, judgment is spoiled.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §11 · paragraph §11.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): And through spoiled judgment, 'crooked judgment', comes this impurity, Heaven forbid. Me'ukal, crooked, has the letters of Amalek, through whom this impurity comes, as it says of Amalek, 'who happened upon you on the way', karcha.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §11 · paragraph §11.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'He saw the Keini', right after 'He saw Amalek', for they stand next to each other in the Torah. For this impurity, the impurity of Amalek, comes through converts, as explained above.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §11 · paragraph §11.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is mar'eh, a vision in a dream, the name people give to this impurity. Mar'eh is the initials of 'the wicked surrounds the righteous', through which this impurity comes, through the perversion of justice.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §12 · paragraph §12.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): So when this impurity comes through the perversion of justice, the only remedy is binding the Chariot. One must bind the Chariot, 'its seat of purple', which are Rafael and Gavriel and the others, the angels of the Chariot, as is brought. They must be bound, to repair the damage to the Chariot from which the fallen loves come.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §12 · paragraph §12.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why the earlier sages established that before sleep we say the binding of the Chariot: 'At my right Michael, at my left Gavriel', and so on. For by binding the Chariot one is saved from this impurity.

### Part 10 — Tekiah, Teruah, Shevarim, and the Five Senses of Rosh Hashanah

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §13 · paragraph §13.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is tekiah, teruah, shevarim.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §13 · paragraph §13.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Tekiah is 'Can a shofar be blown, yitaka, in the city and the people not tremble?' It is the trembling of the body, a cool spirit, as it says, 'A man of understanding is of cool spirit.' Through him faith is repaired, through the man of understanding.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §13 · paragraph §13.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): Teruah is 'And Moshe was shepherding', ro'eh: tefillin, the opposite of 'one who keeps company with the immoral.'
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §13 · paragraph §13.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Shevarim is true and righteous dreams, as it says of Gidon, 'the telling of the dream and its interpretation', shivro: righteous and true dreams.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §13 · paragraph §13.5
  - HE: גַּם שְׁבָרִים הוּא בְּחִינַת תִּקּוּן הַמִּשְׁפָּט, בְּחִינַת: לֵב נִשְׁבָּר, דְּהַיְנוּ מַה שֶּׁהַלֵּב נִשְׁקֶה לְכַבּוֹת חִמּוּם הַלֵּב, שֶׁהוּא כְּמוֹ נוּר דָּלוּק, בְּחִינַת: יִשְׁבְּרוּ פְרָאִים צְמָאָם;
  - EN (our paraphrase): Shevarim is also the repair of judgment, as it says, 'a broken heart', lev nishbar. That is, the heart is given drink to put out its heat, which burns like a fire, as it says, 'the wild animals quench, yishberu, their thirst.'
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §13 · paragraph §13.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): For through spoiled judgment, from which loves fall, they heat the heart and make impure, Heaven forbid. The heart is the place of judgment, as it says, 'Aharon shall carry the judgment of the children of Israel on his heart.' When judgment is spoiled, they heat the heart through the fallen loves, and so the heart must be given drink to put out the heat. This is shevarim, a broken heart, 'they quench their thirst': the heart is watered and the heat is extinguished, which is the repair of judgment.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkos and Shemini Atzeres.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For Rosh Hashanah is the repair of faith, as it says, 'Your faithfulness in the congregation of the holy ones.' For then all the holy congregations gather, and through this all the gathered pieces of faith are collected, and through that the minds are repaired. And this is Rosh Hashanah, the head precisely, for the minds are made and repaired.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the five senses of the mind, all found in Rosh Hashanah. There are five senses in the brain: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, all drawn from the brain, for nerves extend from the brain to each sense. And all these senses are found in Rosh Hashanah, which is the head and the minds.
- Scene 12 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Sight on Rosh Hashanah is, 'The eyes of Hashem your Elokim are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year': on Rosh Hashanah it is judged what will be at its end. On Rosh Hashanah He sees and watches over the whole year, what will be at its end. This is the sense of sight.
- Scene 13 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): Hearing is that Hashem hears the voice of the cries, the prayers and the teruah of His people Israel with mercy.
- Scene 14 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): Smell is, 'and He will be inspired by the fear of Hashem', vaharicho; as we say, 'And so, place Your awe, Hashem our Elokim, upon all Your works.'
- Scene 15 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): Taste is 'And make me tasty dishes, such as I love': the positive commandments, as the Tikkunim say. That is, Hashem tastes on Rosh Hashanah all the good deeds of Israel. This is the sense of taste.
- Scene 16 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): Touch is in the hands, as it says of idols, 'they have hands but do not touch'. And this is that His hand is stretched out to receive those who return, from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur. This is the sense of touch.

### Part 11 — The Ten Days, Yom Kippur, Sukkos and Shemini Atzeres

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): So on Rosh Hashanah the minds are repaired.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): And through the repair of the minds come the tefillin that cover the brain, for tefillin are the shining of the minds. This is the Ten Days of Teshuvah, for teshuvah is, 'If you bring out the precious from the worthless', yakar; and tefillin are called yakar, as the Sages said, 'vikar: these are tefillin.'
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): On Yom Kippur comes the completion of the holy seal, tefillin, the opposite of the seal of the Other Side, as we say, 'and on the fast day of Kippur they are sealed.' In the Ten Days of Teshuvah the tefillin are repaired, and on Yom Kippur their repair is completed, for then the holy seal, the tefillin, is finished.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): Sukkah is the repair of the angel, for sukkah has the numerical value of malach, angel: a dream through an angel, made through the repair of the minds and the tefillin. That is why Sukkos is the time of our joy, the joy of tefillin, to strengthen the angel so the food does not spoil the dream. For Sukkos is the festival of ingathering, when all kinds of food are gathered in; so then joy is needed to strengthen the angel, which is the repair of food. That is why Sukkos is the time of our joy.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §14 · paragraph §14.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): Shemini Atzeres is malchus, kingship, as it says of the king, 'this one shall restrain, ya'atzor, My people.' This is the repair of judgment, as it says, 'Give the king Your judgments,' the repair of judgment explained above, through which that impurity is nullified. And this is what the Kabbalistic writings bring: that on Shemini Atzeres the flow of life is held back and kept in holiness, the repair of that impurity, so that nothing is wasted, Heaven forbid.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is a Rebbe with students. When there is a true Rebbe with students, all these things are made and repaired as well.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through the gathering of students around the Rebbe, the pieces of faith are gathered. So the Rebbe's learning with students is called a yeshivah, from gathering faith: 'a settled land', as in 'Dwell in the land and shepherd faith', the opposite of 'a land not sown', a flaw in faith. For the Rebbe watches over each one's faith, to gather and raise it: 'My eyes are on the faithful of the land, to sit with me', a yeshivah.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why converts, who come from gathering faith, are called by the name of yeshivah, as it says, 'He saw the Keini and said: firm is your dwelling place', moshavecha; and the Tikkunim explain 'firm' as the learning that helps you. For the learning of the yeshivah helps the converts, since they convert through the yeshivah, the Rebbe with students, which gathers the pieces of faith. So faith is repaired through a Rebbe with students.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): The mind, too, is renewed and repaired. The students' minds are repaired and renewed by the Rebbe, and the Rebbe's mind is renewed by the students, as the Sages said, 'and from my students most of all.'

### Part 12 — The Yeshivah's Five Senses, and Rav Huna's Students

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): The main time of gathering is Rosh Hashanah, the head, when the minds are repaired, and they light up and strengthen one another. For a Rebbe with students, when they gather, also has all five senses of the mind.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): Sight is seeing the Rebbe, as it says, 'and your eyes shall see your teacher', which is a great thing.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): Hearing is 'He opens their ear to instruction': each one hears the Rebbe's words of mussar.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): Smell is the trouble and effort each one has to travel, to go and come to the Rebbe. This is smell, as it says, 'the fragrance of your nose', af; and 'also my wisdom stood by me', which the Midrash reads as 'the wisdom I learned with af', with effort. For one can receive from the Rebbe only through trouble and effort. This is the sense of smell.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): Taste is that each one tastes and feels the sweetness of the Rebbe's pleasant words.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): Touch is the hands: the expenses each one has, spending the toil of his hands to come to the Rebbe. This is touch, the hands, the toil of his palms.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): So here too the five senses are repaired, as on Rosh Hashanah, and they light up and strengthen one another. Sometimes the five senses of Rosh Hashanah are weakened and are strengthened by these five senses of the Rebbe with students, and the reverse. And tefillin, the holy seal, are also repaired through them, as it says, 'Seal the Torah among my students.'
- Scene 10 · Kesubos 106a, as quoted in LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.12, §15.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is what our Sages said: When the Rabbis rose from the yeshivah of Rav Huna, they would shake out their cloaks, and the dust rose and covered the day, that is, the sun.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is: when the students rose from the yeshivah of their Rebbe, Rav Huna, they would shake out their cloaks, their garments, which are greatness, as it says, 'Hashem reigns, He is robed in majesty.' They shook off and removed pride, for through the yeshivah of a Rebbe with students the holy seal is repaired, the opposite of pride.
- Scene 12 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.15
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'their cloaks', glimeihu: glami is the initials of 'Hashem reigns, He is robed in majesty', pride, which they subdued and removed.
- Scene 13 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.16
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And the clouds rose': this is the repair of the covenant, raising the body's vitality from 'his flesh is sealed' to the minds, the tefillin. 'The clouds rose', as it says, 'the rainbow will be in the cloud', the repair of the covenant.
- Scene 14 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.17
  - EN (our paraphrase): And anan, cloud, is the initials of 'the nobles of the nations are gathered', nedivei amim ne'esafu: converts. For through the repair of converts comes the repair of the covenant. And when the covenant is repaired, raising that vitality to the minds, then come the tefillin that cover the brain.
- Scene 15 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.18
  - EN (our paraphrase): And 'they covered the day', that is, the sun: the tefillin that cover the brain, which is the sun, Moshe, as it says, 'the face of Moshe was like the face of the sun'; for Moshe is da'as, knowledge.
- Scene 17 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.19
  - EN (our paraphrase): And when the mind is repaired like Moshe, like tefillin, then even at Moshe's passing, when the minds depart, the impression that remains, which is sleep, is also very good, as it says, 'Sweet is the sleep of the one who serves', whose initials are Moshe.
- Scene 18 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.20
  - EN (our paraphrase): For sometimes the minds depart, from the Rebbe and from the students, for the minds are not always fixed. The time of departure is Moshe's passing, the departure of da'as, sleep. Through the repair of the minds in the yeshivah, even when da'as departs, sleep is sweet and good, 'sweet is the sleep of the one who serves', for the repair of the minds is the repair of sleep, a dream through an angel.
- Scene 19 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.21
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'Sweet is the sleep of the one who serves.' Sweet precisely: the sweet kind, which is the repair of the covenant, the opposite of its flaw, which is the bitter kind, the impurity spoken of, Heaven forbid. Through repairing the minds, sleep becomes sweet, the repair of the covenant.
- Scene 20 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.22
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'whether he eats little or much': the eating does not harm him, though through it that impurity can come in a dream, Heaven forbid. For his sleep has been repaired through the repair of the minds; even sleep, the departure of da'as, is good and very sweet for him.

### Part 13 — Simplicity: The Son Who Serves Like a Servant

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.23
  - EN (our paraphrase): For in truth one must precisely set the mind aside. One must cast away all clever wisdom and serve Hashem with simplicity, for one's deeds must be greater than one's wisdom, and 'not study is the main thing, but deed.' So one must set aside all clever wisdom and serve Hashem simply, without any cleverness at all.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.23
  - EN (our paraphrase): Not only the foolish cleverness of ordinary people, but even real wisdom. Even one who truly has a great mind, when he comes to some service of Hashem, must cast away all his wisdom and engage in His service with simplicity.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.24
  - EN (our paraphrase): One must even behave and do things that look like madness for the service of Hashem, as it says, 'in her love you will always be carried away'. For the love of Hashem, one must do things that look like madness, to do His commandments and His will.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.24
  - EN (our paraphrase): For one must roll in every kind of mud and mire for the service of Hashem and His commandments. Not only an actual mitzvah: anything that holds the will of Hashem is called a mitzvah. There are six hundred and thirteen commandments, and they have many branches; anything that holds His will, that gives pleasure to our Father in Heaven, is a mitzvah. And one must roll in every kind of mud and mire to do some will and pleasure for Hashem.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.25
  - EN (our paraphrase): And when his love for Hashem is so strong that he sets aside all his wisdom and throws himself into mud and mire for His service, to give Him some pleasure, then this is good for the mind. For then he merits to grasp even what is above the mind, what even Moshe in his lifetime did not grasp: why a tzaddik suffers and a wicked man prospers. That looks like a perversion of justice, Heaven forbid, and even Moshe in his lifetime did not grasp it.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.26
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is, even when the mind is complete and does not depart, which is 'Moshe in his lifetime'; for the departure of the mind, sleep, is Moshe's passing, while the mind standing in place is Moshe in his lifetime. Even then one cannot grasp this, why there is a tzaddik who suffers.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.26
  - EN (our paraphrase): But through his love for Hashem being so strong that he throws himself and rolls in mud and mire for His service, doing the work of an actual servant out of love for Him, he merits to grasp even what Moshe in his lifetime, the mind at its height, cannot grasp: a tzaddik who suffers, a wicked man who prospers.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.27
  - EN (our paraphrase): For there is the level of a son, who searches through the King's treasuries like a son. And there is the level of a servant, who has only to do the work he was given, and may not ask any reason or inquire into his work; he is obliged only to do his part, the work he was given.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.28
  - EN (our paraphrase): But there is a son who loves his father so much that, out of love, he does the work of a servant, what a simple servant must do. He jumps into the great earthworks, into the thick of the battle, and rolls in every kind of mud and mire to give his father pleasure, work that even a simple servant would not do.
- Scene 12 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.29
  - EN (our paraphrase): Then, when his father sees his love is so strong that he throws himself into complete servitude for love of him, he reveals to him even what is not given even to a son. For even the son, who searches the King's treasuries, still has places he may not enter; there are understandings even the son does not grasp.
- Scene 13 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.29
  - EN (our paraphrase): But because the son sets aside all his wisdom and throws himself into servitude, his father has compassion on him and reveals to him what is not given even to a son: a tzaddik who suffers and a wicked man who prospers, which even Moshe in his lifetime did not grasp.
- Scene 14 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.30
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'And I will have compassion on them as a man has compassion on his son who serves him.' 'Who serves him' precisely: a son who throws himself into servitude, sets aside all his wisdom and does the work of a servant. 'His son who serves him': a son who does the work of a servant.
- Scene 15 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.30
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through this, 'I will have compassion on him': for Hashem has compassion on him, seeing his love is so strong, and shows and reveals to him a tzaddik who suffers and a wicked man who prospers. And this is what it says there, 'and you will return and see the difference between the tzaddik and the wicked': he merits through this to grasp it.
- Scene 16 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.31
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the repair of judgment. For he merits to grasp why a tzaddik suffers and a wicked man prospers, which looks like a perversion of justice; and now that he grasps and understands it, that is the repair of judgment.
- Scene 17 · LM II:5 §15 · paragraph §15.32
  - EN (our paraphrase): So through a true Rebbe with students, all these things are made and repaired.

### Part 14 — The Lung: Cool and Moist

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §16 · paragraph §16.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is the lung. When the lung is whole, all these things are made as well. For the lung is cool and moist. Cool is 'a man of understanding is of cool spirit', the repair of faith through the man of understanding. Moist is the moisture and richness that rises to the mind and becomes the minds, the tefillin.
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §16 · paragraph §16.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Also, when the lung is whole, this is the repair of sleep, for sleep comes through the lung. The lung is cool and moist, and coolness and moisture are the essence of sleep.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §16 · paragraph §16.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why rainy weather is a time for sleep, when sleep is very pleasant, because rain is cool and moist. And in the morning too sleep is pleasant, for then the dew falls, which is also cool and moist. So the lung, cool and moist, is the repair of sleep.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §16 · paragraph §16.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): The lung, re'ah, is also named so because it lights up the eyes, as our Sages said. That is joy, as it says, 'The light of the eyes gladdens the heart': the repair of joy, which strengthens the angel.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §16 · paragraph §16.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): When the lung is whole, it is also the repair of judgment. The place of judgment is the heart, as it says, 'Aharon shall carry the judgment of the children of Israel on his heart.' Through spoiled judgment, fallen loves drop from the Chariot and the heart is heated. So the heat of the heart is spoiled judgment; and the lung blows upon the heart and cools the heat, which is the repair of judgment.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §16 · paragraph §16.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is 'He makes His wind blow, and waters flow.' Through the blowing of the lung's wind, which cools the heat of the heart, judgment is repaired. 'Waters flow' is 'Let judgment roll like water.' And the lung 'lights up the eyes': as the Sages said, 'A judge has only what his eyes see', which is the repair of judgment.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §16 · paragraph §16.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And me'iras, lights up, is the initials of 'its inside inlaid with love from the daughters of Yerushalayim': the repair of judgment, the repair of the Chariot, where holy love dwells.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §16 · paragraph §16.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'Your judgment goes forth as light', and as we say in prayer, 'bring forth our judgment like light': through the lung, which lights up the eyes, judgment is repaired.

### Part 15 — A Journey in the Desert: The Meat, the Grass and the Coals

- Scene 2 · Bava Basra 74b, as quoted in LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Rav Ashi said: Huna bar Nasan told me: Once we were travelling in the desert, and we had a leg of meat with us. We cut it open, cleaned it, and set it on the grass. While we were gathering wood, the leg became whole again, and we roasted it. When we came back after twelve months, we saw those coals still glowing. When I came before Amemar, he said to me: That grass was samtarei, and those coals were of broom wood, ritma.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): He told that once he walked in the desert: this is the repair of faith, as it says, 'your walking after Me in the desert, in a land not sown.' A land not sown is a flaw in faith, through which the seeds were spoiled. 'Your walking after Me in the desert' is the repair of faith: they believed in Him and followed Him in the desert, and repaired 'a land not sown', the fall of faith.
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And we had a leg of meat with us': the leg of meat is converts, who come from outside the covenant of the flesh, through whom comes 'his flesh is sealed'. For through raising fallen faith, converts are made, and through them the seal of the Other Side grows strong, Heaven forbid.
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And we opened it': we repaired 'his flesh is sealed', and it became the holy seal, as it says, 'engraved like a seal, holy to Hashem': the repair of the minds.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And we cleaned it', nekarinan: this is 'I will place you in the cleft, nikras, of the rock', the limitation of the mind, so as not to go beyond its boundary.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And we set it on the grass': grass is all food in general, as it says, 'like green grass I have given you everything.' So 'we set it on the grass' means: after we repaired the minds, we set ourselves upon the food, to repair it, so it would not harm and spoil the dream, Heaven forbid. And this repair of the food comes through strengthening the angel, through renewing the will, through joy.
- Scene 9 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'While we gathered wood', tzivi: this is 'He does as He wills, kemitzbeyah, with the host of heaven', the renewal of the will. We wanted to bring the will, the renewal of the will, which strengthens the angel and repairs the food.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.8
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'While we gathered wood, it healed', chalim: while we were busy repairing the food through renewing the will, a dream, chalom, came to us. Chalim means dream. And chalim also means binding and joining, for the dream was joined from two powers, the power of the angel and the power of the demon, because the food had not yet been repaired.
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.9
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And we roasted it', tavinan, means fasting. That is, we fasted, for a fast brings joy, which is the repair of the dream.
- Scene 12 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.10
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'When we came back after twelve months': when we came back to the month of Nissan, which comes after the twelve months of the year. For Nissan is the first of the months and the new year for kings, when the angel is strengthened.
- Scene 13 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.11
  - EN (our paraphrase): And even so, 'we saw those coals still glowing': even after twelve months, in Nissan, the coals were still burning. That is the heat of the heart, through which that impurity comes, Heaven forbid. Yet in Nissan the angel is strengthened, and it would have been fitting for the impurity to be completely nullified then.
- Scene 14 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'When I came before Amemar, he said: That grass was samtarei.' The food, which is grass, was sam trei, of two potions: a potion of life and a potion of death, the power of the angel and the power of the demon. For before the food was repaired, the demon's power was mixed into it, and so it was sam trei, two potions, made of two powers, the angel's and the demon's.
- Scene 15 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.13
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Those coals were of broom wood', ritma, rosem, as Rashi explains. This is the repair of the Chariot, as it says, 'harness, resom, the chariot.' Amemar told him that the heat came from the damage to the Chariot, through the perversion of justice, which has no remedy except binding the Chariot, 'harness the chariot.'
- Scene 16 · LM II:5 §17 · paragraph §17.14
  - EN (our paraphrase): And ritma is the initials of 'its inside inlaid with love from the daughters of Yerushalayim', for from the fall of this love comes that heat, and there is no remedy but 'harness the chariot', binding the Chariot, 'its seat of purple, its inside inlaid with love.'

### Part 16 — The Verse Decoded, and Simple Service Raises Judgment

- Scene 2 · LM II:5 §18 · paragraph §18.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is: 'Sound the shofar at the new moon.'
- Scene 3 · LM II:5 §18 · paragraph §18.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Tik'u, sound, is 'Can a shofar be blown in the city and the people not tremble?' The trembling of the body, 'a man of understanding is of cool spirit': the man of understanding, through whom faith is repaired.
- Scene 4 · LM II:5 §18 · paragraph §18.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'At the new moon, a shofar', bachodesh shofar: with a new splendour, shipur, a new glory and pride that is revealed. That is the converts, who bring pride into Israel, made by raising fallen faith. And this is:
- Scene 5 · LM II:5 §18 · paragraph §18.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'At the covered time', bakeseh, 'for our festival day'. Bakeseh is the tefillin that cover the brain, for from that pride tefillin are made through the shields of the land, who repair and raise the damage of pride, 'his flesh is sealed', and make of it the holy seal, tefillin. And this is:
- Scene 6 · LM II:5 §18 · paragraph §18.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'For our festival day': Rosh Hashanah, the head and the minds, when all these things are made.
- Scene 7 · LM II:5 §18 · paragraph §18.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'For it is a statute for Israel': chok, a statute, means food, as the Sages taught; the repair of food.
- Scene 8 · LM II:5 §18 · paragraph §18.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'A judgment of the Elokim of Yaakov': this is the repair of judgment. It is all as explained.
- Scene 10 · LM II:5 §19 · paragraph §19.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): This belongs above, to the verse 'And I will have compassion on them.'
- Scene 11 · LM II:5 §19 · paragraph §19.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): In truth it is a very great thing to cast away all wisdom and act with simplicity, to do the work of a servant, serving Him with simple wholeness, without cleverness. For this is the hidden Torah: the Torah is hidden and concealed there. When one does simple service, there is surely very high Torah in it; only one does not know what is in it. So the Torah in it is hidden and concealed, the hidden Torah.
- Scene 12 · LM II:5 §19 · paragraph §19.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the hidden Torah is, as the Sages taught on Shir HaShirim, 'the curves of your thighs': just as the thigh is covered, so the words of Torah are hidden. Through this, judgment is repaired. For the Sages also read 'the curves of your thighs' as the shitin, the channels beneath the altar that go down to the depths, as it says, 'Your judgments are a great deep': judgment that has fallen to the depths.
- Scene 13 · LM II:5 §19 · paragraph §19.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): Through this simple service, the hidden Torah, the shitin that go down to the depths, they break through and go down to the depths and raise judgment from its fall, from 'Your judgments are a great deep'.
- Scene 14 · LM II:5 §19 · paragraph §19.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): As it says, 'Deep calls to deep', and the Sages taught: when the water is poured on the altar on Sukkos, one deep says to the other, 'Let your waters flow.' That is, the depths call to one another to return the judgment that fell to them, so that judgment is restored: 'Let judgment roll like water.'
- Scene 15 · LM II:5 §19 · paragraph §19.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'Let your waters flow': 'Let judgment roll like water': let them pour out and return the judgment that fell to them, so it is repaired. So through simple deeds and service, judgment is repaired.
