### Part 1 — Prayer, the Weapon of Mashiach

- Scene 3 · LM I:2 §1, on Vayikra 21:1 · paragraph §1.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Hashem said to Moshe: say to the Kohanim, the sons of Aharon, and tell them: none of you shall become impure for a dead person among his people.
- Scene 4 · Zohar, Sifra diTzniusa (Terumah 177a) · paragraph §1.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): It is brought in the Sifra diTzniusa: from the openings of the nose, the spirit of life is drawn to Mashiach.
- Scene 5 · LM I:2 §1, on Yeshayahu 48:9; 11:3 · paragraph §1.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): For Mashiach's main weapon is prayer, which is the aspect of the nose, as it says: 'and with My praise, I will restrain My anger for you.' From there comes his main life force, and every war he wages and every conquest he makes, all of it comes from there, as it says: 'and he will be inspired with the fear of Hashem', literally, he will breathe its scent. This is the aspect of the nose.
- Scene 7 · LM I:2 §1, on Bereishis 48:22; Tehillim 44:7 · paragraph §1.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is his main weapon, as it says: 'with my sword and with my bow', which Rashi explains as 'with my prayer and my supplication.' And as it says: 'For I do not trust in my bow… in Elokim we have praised', the aspect of 'and with My praise, I will restrain for you.'
- Scene 8 · LM I:2 §2, on Tehillim 45:4; 132:11–12 · paragraph §2.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): This weapon must be received through the aspect of Yosef, which is guarding the covenant, as it says: 'Gird your sword upon your thigh.' And as it says: 'Of the fruit of your body I will set upon your throne': this is Mashiach, the aspect of prayer. 'If your children keep My covenant': that is, through the aspect of Yosef.
- Scene 10 · LM I:2 §2, on Tehillim 149:6 · paragraph §2.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And Yosef, who guarded the covenant, took the birthright, which is the service of prayer, the double portion. For prayer is a double portion: it holds two things, the praise of Hashem and the asking for one's needs. This is 'and a double-edged sword in their hand': two mouths, a double portion. And it was taken from Reuven because he disturbed his father's resting place, for it depends on guarding the covenant.
- Scene 12 · LM I:2 §3 · paragraph §3.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And whoever has merited this sword must know how to fight with it: not to tilt it to the right or to the left, but to hit a hair's breadth and not miss.
- Scene 13 · LM I:2 §3, on Tehillim 112:5 · paragraph §3.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): This is possible only through the aspect of mishpat, judgement. For mishpat is the middle pillar: he strikes with his weapon at the very place it must strike, tilting neither right nor left, only to the middle. This is 'he measures his words with judgement.'
- Scene 15 · LM I:2 §3, on Bereishis 48:22; Tehillim 81:5; 72:1 · paragraph §3.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why Yosef received the birthright from Yaakov specifically, as it says: 'and I have given you': 'I' precisely, the aspect of mishpat. And this is 'for it is a statute for Yisrael', the covenant, as it says, 'He set a statute in his flesh'; 'a judgement of the Elokim of Yaakov': Yosef must receive this sword from mishpat, so that he can measure his words with judgement. And this is 'Give Your judgements to the king': Mashiach receives from mishpat.

### Part 2 — Charity, Judgement and Clear Eyes

- Scene 2 · LM I:2 §4, on Devarim 33:21; Tehillim 99:4 · paragraph §4.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And by what does one merit mishpat? Through tzedakah, charity. For through charity one takes hold of the attribute of judgement, as it says: 'He did the charity of Hashem, and His judgements', and as it says: 'judgement and charity in Yaakov.'
- Scene 3 · LM I:2 §4, on Tehillim 75:8 · paragraph §4.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): For charity works through judgement, as it says: 'Elokim judges: this one He lowers and that one He raises', making one poor and another rich. When a person gives charity, he is in the aspect of 'this one He lowers', for he lessens his own money, and of 'that one He raises', for he makes the poor man rich. So through this he takes hold of the attribute of judgement.
- Scene 5 · LM I:2 §4, on Bava Basra 10a; Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 92 · paragraph §4.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): That is why one must set aside charity before prayer: so that he can measure his words with judgement, and hit a hair's breadth and not miss.
- Scene 6 · LM I:2 §4, on Bava Basra 123a · paragraph §4.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is what our Sages said: why did Yaakov give the birthright to Yosef? Because Yosef sustained him. It is like a householder who raised an orphan in his home…
- Scene 7 · LM I:2 §4, on Bereishis 47:12; Yechezkel 21:2; 48:22 · paragraph §4.5
  - EN (our paraphrase): As it says: 'and Yosef sustained his father and his brothers with bread, according to the little ones', lefi hataf, like 'hatef, speak towards the south', a word of speech. 'Lefi hataf': his prayer flowed fluently in his mouth through charity. And through the charity he did, Yaakov, who is mishpat, gave him the birthright, which is prayer, as it says: 'And I have given you Shechem': 'I' precisely, the aspect of mishpat.
- Scene 9 · LM I:2 §5, on Bereishis 14:7; Devarim 33:28 · paragraph §5.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): The main cause of foreign thoughts is damage to mishpat. For mishpat is the aspect of the eyes, as it says: 'they came to Ein Mishpat', the spring of judgement, which is the aspect of 'the eye of Yaakov.'
- Scene 10 · LM I:2 §5, on Devarim 16:19; Eichah 3:44 · paragraph §5.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And through damage to judgement comes damage to the eyes, as it says: 'for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise.' This is the aspect of foreign thoughts in prayer: they are clouds that cover the eyes, as it says: 'You covered Yourself with a cloud…'
- Scene 11 · LM I:2 §5, on Yeshayahu 1:27; 52:8; Bereishis 49:22 · paragraph §5.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): And in the future, when mishpat is repaired, as it says, 'Zion will be redeemed with judgement', then the clouds covering the eye will pass, as it says: 'for eye to eye they will see, when Hashem returns to Zion.' And for this reason Yosef is called 'a fruitful son above the eye.'

### Part 3 — Bringing Every Prayer to the Tzaddik

- Scene 2 · LM I:2 §6, on Bereishis 49:10 · paragraph §6.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): Everyone must intend in his prayer to bind himself to the tzaddikim of the generation. For every tzaddik of the generation is an aspect of Moshe-Mashiach, as we find that the tzaddikim call each other 'Moshe', as in: 'Moshe, you have spoken well.' And Moshe is the aspect of Mashiach, as it says: 'until Shiloh comes': this is Moshe-Mashiach.
- Scene 3 · LM I:2 §6, on Shemos 39:33; 40:18 · paragraph §6.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): Every single prayer that each person prays is a limb of the Shechinah, the parts of the Mishkan. No one in Yisrael can join each part to its partner, each in its place, except Moshe alone. So one must bring and bind all the prayers to the tzaddik of the generation, as it says: 'they brought the Mishkan to Moshe'; and he knows how to join each part to the next and make it one complete form, as it says: 'and Moshe set up the Mishkan.'
- Scene 5 · LM I:2 §7 · paragraph §7.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And all the Torah that a person learns in order to keep and to do: all its letters are sparks of souls. They clothe themselves within the prayer, and are renewed there, like a new life taking shape.
- Scene 6 · LM I:2 §7, on Tehillim 19:2; 66:2 · paragraph §7.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is 'the heavens tell of the glory of Kel': the heavens are the Torah, which is fire and water, that is, the souls; and they come into the prayer, which is called the glory of Kel, as it says, 'make His praise glorious', the aspect of 'and with My praise, I will restrain for you.'
- Scene 7 · LM I:2 §7 · paragraph §7.3
  - EN (our paraphrase): The souls together with the prayer are called glory, because it clothes us, as Rabbi Yochanan called his garments 'my honourers'; and so it is called the glory of Kel. And they give light to each other: the souls light up the prayer, by an arousal from below, and the prayer lights up the souls with renewal, renewing them like a new life taking shape.
- Scene 9 · LM I:2 §7, on Tehillim 45:15 · paragraph §7.4
  - EN (our paraphrase): And the souls clothed in the prayer, which are brought to the tzaddik of the generation, are the aspect of 'maidens in her train, her companions, are brought to you.'
- Scene 10 · LM I:2 §8, on Bava Basra 73b; Tehillim 30:8; 86:16; Bamidbar 6:25 · paragraph §8.1
  - EN (our paraphrase): And this is what Rabbah bar bar Chanah said: 'We saw this fish…' For in our exile, the Holy One, blessed be He, as it were, hides His face, as it says, 'You hid Your face'; the face is the aspect of mercy, and He has turned His back, the aspect of judgement. And all our prayers and requests are about this, that He turned His back to us: that He turn His face back, as it says, 'Turn to me', and 'May Hashem shine His face.'
- Scene 11 · LM I:2 §8, on Shemos 40:18 · paragraph §8.2
  - EN (our paraphrase): When we see how long the exile is, and every day we cry out to Him and are not saved, some of our people err in their hearts, Heaven forbid, and think all the prayers are in vain. But truly, the tzaddikim of every generation raise all the prayers and set them up, as in 'Moshe set up the Mishkan.' They raise each part to its place and build the Shechinah's form little by little, until its full measure is complete. Then Mashiach, who is Moshe, will come, complete it, and set it up whole.

### Part 4 — The Great Fish, the Ship, and Emor

- Scene 4 · LM I:2 §8 · paragraph §8.5
  - HE: דְּיָתִיב לֵיהּ חַלְתָּא אַגַּבֵּהּ – הַיְנוּ הַתְּפִלּוֹת, שֶׁאָנוּ מִתְפַּלְּלִים עַל זֶה שֶׁכִּבְיָכוֹל פָּנָה עֹרֶף אֵלֵינוּ;

  - EN (our paraphrase): 'It settled on it': this is 'they brought the Mishkan to Moshe', for one must bring and bind the prayer to the tzaddik of the generation.
- Scene 6 · LM I:2 §8, on Yechezkel 16:7 · paragraph §8.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'And grass grew on it': these are the souls that come with the prayer, the aspect of 'maidens in her train, her companions'; for souls are called grasses, as it says: 'I made you numerous as the plants of the field.'
- Scene 7 · LM I:2 §8 · paragraph §8.8

  - EN (our paraphrase): 'We climbed up, and baked, and cooked': all the prayers climb and rise; and the more we pray, the more the Shechinah is built, and she prepares herself for union. - Scene 9 · LM I:2 §8 · paragraph §8.10, §8.11, §8.12
  - EN (our paraphrase): When the form of the whole Shechinah is complete, through many prayers, His mercy will be stirred, and the attribute of judgement will turn into the attribute of mercy. - EN (our paraphrase): 'Had the ship not been near': this is the aspect of chesed, kindness, as our Sages said: 'sailors are mostly pious', chassidim. Without His kindness we would sink, Heaven forbid, in the exile.

  - EN (our paraphrase): 'The Kohanim' are the aspect of Torah, the aspect of the souls, as above, as it says: 'For the lips of the Kohen guard knowledge, and Torah…'

  - EN (our paraphrase): 'Aharon' is the aspect of mishpat, as it says: 'and Aharon shall carry the judgement of the children of Yisrael'; for one must bring all the prayers to the aspect of Moshe-Mashiach, and he will set up the Mishkan.
- Scene 17 · LM I:2 §9 · paragraph §9.5

- Scene 18 · LM I:2 §9 · paragraph §9.6
  - EN (our paraphrase): 'He shall not become impure for a soul among his people': that is, through guarding the covenant, as above. As brought in the Zohar: the root of the evil inclination is in forbidden relations, and that is the root of impurity.
- Scene 19 · LM I:2 §9, on Sotah 48a; 49a · paragraph §9.7
  - EN (our paraphrase): And when one guards the covenant, he merits prayer, as above, and merits 'and with My praise, I will restrain for you'; for scent depends mainly on purity, as our Sages said: 'since purity ceased, scent ceased.'
